So Who Really Was "The Godfather of Grunge"?
Speak not because it is safe, but because it is right.

This is an odd choice for vinyl; It's not a great sounding recording.
With Neil Young recordings authenticity beats recording quality anytime. "Because Sound Matters" relates to the feel or the vibe, not so much to the high defintion side of a recording. "The Times" is a genuine marker for the first pandemic year, fans have been asking for it and maybe with regards to the production capacities there was an unexpected window of opportunity...
Anyway, I ordered it.
true fans will buy anything
Speaking of 'the Times', I am wondering if the good folks at Thrasher's Wheat might now express regrets about having promoted QAnon conspiracy theories on this site?
I'm not a true fan then ;)
Last contemporary release I bought was Storytone Deluxe and I don't play it often enough to justify its purchase. The same goes for A Letter Home due to the atrocious sound quality.
I'd much rather spend my money on music I will end up revisiting every now and then. The subject matter of hits latest albums just doesn't appeal to me nor does it align with my personal opinion.
@ Nimrod - maybe so, but vinyl is now the leading physical product in music, so you gotta do what you gotta do.
@ Dionys - good point that "With Neil Young recordings authenticity beats recording quality anytime."
the feel of the moment has always been paramount w/ Neil.
@ Art - oh really? so are you buying? or a true fan? or both? curious. asking for a friend.
@ Renaldo56 - hmm. QAnon conspiracy theories? Can you site any specific links? we definitely do not recall ever advancing here on TW anything labeled as a QAnon conspiracy theory, especially since there is no such thing as "QAnon". There is Q and there is Anonymous, which are definitely two totally separate and distinct "entities". but mashing up "QAnon" is non-nonsensical and has been addressed before by others. look into it.
We have covered quite a bit over past 25 years here and maybe this post on The Day The Music Died: 50 Years Ago Today and Why It Still Matters Now, More Than Ever?
this was way, way before "QAnon". incidentally, a proven fact does not equal a "conspiracy theory". And, by attempting to label this blog as a "QAnon conspiracy theory" is a smear tactic, plain and simple. especially w/o any supporting evidence.
so be very careful here b/c we can see what you're doing w/ the CT label and have been down the road before.
why might you ask? we don't really recall you ever commenting here Renaldo56 and you do not appear to be a long time reader or commenter based on your profile, maybe you have, and glad to have you as a silent lurker. so why suddenly come out on this subject at this time? instead of asking us to renounce something, why not be clear here on your exact motives and agenda?
well, maybe you'll find answer in our comment on this thread: http://neilyoungnews.thrasherswheat.org/2021/01/comment-of-moment-neil-young-sells-song.html
peace be with you on your search for The TRUTH.
I recall Neil posted something on NYA (maybe under Letters to Neil) saying they hadn't planned on a vinyl release for The Times because it was a relatively low-res audio recording, but that if people said they were interested he'd be prepared to produce one. So I'm guessing there was a positive response.
Thrasher, I was referring to your dissemination of the film, "Out of Shadows". https://www.thedailybeast.com/inside-out-of-shadows-the-bonkers-hollywood-pedophilia-documentary-qanon-loves
Given current events, thought you might have had some second thoughts.
"It's going to take a lot of love to make things work out right". Peace.
So what is it, that makes you a "true fan"? Not having bought the "Letter Home" Boxset or sitting out the 50th anniversary edition of every release for the next fifty years because you have them already, does that disqualify a person? Are you qualified for being a "true fan" under the condition that you have seen NY at least 50+ times in concert or is it because you have been to NY concerts since the 50's of the last century? Is it that you genuinely understood every twist and turn of a career lasting half a century that makes for a "true fan"? And above all: is the status to be a "true fan" really that desirable?
Help a poor European, way out there, I am open for suggestions. What makes you a "true Neil Young fan"?
There’s no such thing as a “true fan”. Just like there’s no such thing as giving 110%, it’s either 100% or less. You either like everything Neil has released or you only like some of what he’s released. If you only like Harvest, your still a fan. The whole idea of a “true fan” is simply ridiculous from my perspective. These labels are pointless.
Peace 🙏
Everyday on my way to work I pass under a bridge that has some large graffiti on it. If you are headed west on the left side it says “OHIO”, on the right inner side it says “HERO” and on the left inner side you can read “BEACH”. It might not be that unsual in an American context to read these words in your everyday world, but along a German highway it definitely is a strange coincidence. In fact “OHIO” occurs on quite a few viaducts on roads west of Munich, and even within the western parts of town itself. I do not think that these inscriptions were done by only one person, they are a random result or combination of words that appeared to be attractive to the persons who created this “street art”.
I guess you are a true Neil Young fan if you hear tin soldiers and Nixon coming, the seagulls are still out of reach and you feel like a western hero when you are passing a bridge on your way to work. That is to say: One might be a true Neil Young fan if you make these connections in your everyday life. And maybe that's not pointless,eh?
@Art Carey
"true fans will buy anything"
actually true Neil Young fans will winnow the great stuff from the crap
I read thrasher's but most of the time what's promoted here is no ability to critical analysis of Neil's work, and that's what saddens me - yeah, I've heard The Times - it's cutesy but a piece of crap - paul dionne
@ Lewis - looks like it, vinyl has made an amazing comeback.
@ Renaldo56 - thanks for clarification. ok, right.
So "Out of Shadows". What do you see as CT here or in the cited DB article?
Seriously. What about J Epstein & G Maxwell and their activities @ Epstein Island & New Mexico ranch are CT? you are aware of J Epstein & G Maxwell and their criminal activities, right?
The court docs and conviction definitely confirm this all to be real, very sadly. Hopefully, you're not defending their reprehensible crimes, certainly. But that seems to be what you're doing here w/ that link. In denial of the worst crimes possible against children. shudder
Incidentally, today's NYA video features "Children of Destiny". neil definitely does think this stuff is CT.
Lastly, since this is quite off topic, if you'd like to continue, either go to the suggested thread or original thread to continue.
otherwise, we suggest the following:
use disCERNment
connect the dots
think critically for your self
do your own original research
be independent w/ your own unique voice
create rather than simply critique
back to you w/ "It's going to take a lot of love to make things work out right". absolutely. but a little love is ok, too. Peace. and love.
@ Dionys & Dan - we do know Art and have been on the rail w/ him & his wife a few times.
We think Art might just be pulling our legs here for some fun.
@ Dionys - interesting “street art”.
yes, it would seem that english phrases graffitti'd around Germany are more than a strange coincidence.
someone may be trying to suggest something. or avoid a repeat of history?
@ Paul - HNY!
so, your opinion of TIMES is "cutesy but a piece of crap"?
really? that's fine. your opinion & welcome to it, of course. But do consider that to be serious critical analysis of Neil's work that you want TW to provide?
off the top of our head, we believe we said something about TIMES as being a perfect set of songs for 2020 capturing the angst and grief that the year brought in a tight package culminating w/ Dylan's timeless classic re-worked in Neil's stripped down version, bringing new meanings, being played alone in a teepee @ 10,000 feet in the Rockies.
or something like that. is TIMES essential? no. but, as you say, true Neil Young fans winnow the great stuff from the crap. or, as we are predisposed, separate the wheat from the chaff.
to call TIMES crap is pretty insulting. not only to neil, but bob as well. and their fans, too.
sorry TW isn't meeting your needs for critical analysis of Neil's work. we'll try and do better in 2021.
most of our critical analysis has covered neil's vast career. see
