Neil Young's Greendale has been compared to the literary classics of John Steinbeck's work, Thornton Wilder's "Our Town" and Sherwood Anderson's "Winesburg, Ohio" for its complexity and emotional depth in exploring tragedy in a small town in America.

Neil Young writes on "RETURN TO GREENDALE" | NYA:
Greendale, the story of Sun Green coming of age in the world, and seeing all of the threats against the Earth, is one of my favorite films in the Shakey Pictures library. Sun Green was played by one of my daughter Amber’s friends, Sara White. I discovered her at a school play we went to see when Amber was in high school.
Larry Johnson and I shot Greendale on super 8 film cameras. I wlll never forget it. Getting up before dawn and heading to nearby Half Moon Bay from my ranch everyday, driving in Grandpa’s big white eldorado with a cup of coffee, I would meet Larry and we would plan and shoot the day. So many of my friends are in Greendale; Gary Burden as the Captain, Eric Johnson as the Devil, Mazzeo as Earl Green, Sun Green’s dad. Pegi Young as her mom Edith. Larry Johnson was the cop. Erik Markegard was Earth Brown. Erik was the son of my foreman at the ranch, Larry Markegard. Karin Markegard, Erik’s mother, played a part as well.
These folks were all my friends. I will never forget Greendale, one of the biggest highlights of my filming life.

Best track on the album and one of Neils best songs. So powerful!
One of my least favorite songs from my one of my least favorite Neil Young albums. Bandit is a sleeper though.
These two comments above verify the greatness that is Neil Young. Two strong yet contrasting opinions illustrate just how powerful Neil’s output is. Love him or hate him, he’s going to get a reaction, and that is what separates great art from good art. The stronger the reaction the better the work.

@Dan Swan, I totally agree: the breadth and depth of opinions expressed by Neil fans can be not only remarkable, but striking. The divided responses over Homegrown--the album we'd all been waiting for, indeed--attest to this. Some of the tracks and albums I champion most are those that others aren't particularly moved by, and vice versa. As it should be.
Although it's sometimes possible to detect patterns within a particular reviewer's assessments, there's ultimately very little accounting for matters of taste. Personally, count me as one of Team Greendale. There are days when I could happily listen to Falling From Above on a loop for an hour or two. Yet I can see why an admittedly quite lengthy, narrative-heavy concept album would be difficult for some to get into. The tracks are all intimately linked to each other, so it's not like you can easily pick out highlights for isolated listening. The entire album begs to be heard in its unified context, as "all one song". And considering it's almost 80 minutes long, that's potentially a daunting prospect.
On the other hand, you get people kvetching when Neil releases a shorty. Homegrown is 36 minutes and some people feel it's too slight and fragmented, even though the duration and structure is quite in line with Harvest, Goldrush, etc. People clamor to have an entire entire CD filled, and then albums like AYP?, SWA, or CDII are called "too long". Which is it? But these contrasts are what make opinions entertaining and eye-opening.

@ Dan - agree. and we have seen that quite a bit in the past the diverging opinions playing out vividly. but not so much these days. which is ok. we;re a bit weary of the divisiveness of it all.
