Trying to be objective. I am not sure about "masterpiece." I think Neil spoke direct truth to all power on Greendale, as he recognized that corruption was everywhere- I am not sure that Dylan's song does recognize the ubiquity of corruption.

Thanks Abner.
Yes, we do see where some might miss the large point here.

We not only a agree that it's a "masterpiece." but think that underestimates MMF.

It is THE song thus far of this century. No competition either.

might we gently inquire as to how far you made it through our post on the subject?

We're very curious for feedback. When we ran this on the 50th anniversary we had all sorts of reaction.

Maybe we didn't do the subject proper justice? Maybe -- like Bob -- we weren't explicit enough? or too explicit for such a subject.

thanks, peace

As musical cinematic wordplay goes, this definitely falls under the label “masterpiece”. I am conflicted about the label, as it certainly falls into the realm of opinion. Everyone has one, and rarely do we all agree. Longevity will always be one way to identify a masterpiece, and this being a relatively new release, not much time has passed. Dylan has already become a living legend by way of his prolific and inspirational output over the past several decades. Therefore his releases tend to come with much higher expectations than most of his contemporaries. As we all know; expectations are typically unrealistic when directed towards a gifted artist such as Bob Dylan, or Neil Young for that matter. Expectations sometimes have a negative impact not only on the listener but the song itself. Both Dylan and Young have been victim to unrealistic expectations. Fortunately neither one seems to be concerned about it.

I approached Murder Most Foul without any expectations, and found it to be a brilliant use of wordplay to communicate its subject matter. The musicians were able to elevate the intention with restraint and articulation. Taking its time to create a visual landscape and using a cleaver mixture of references to articulate not only the event itself but the emotions stirred by the event. By succeeding in combining the emotional experience and connecting it with musical references, Bob has created yet another example of his genius. The pace of the song may feel arduous to some, but for me that 17 minutes flew by as the lyrics and the delivery just drew me into Bob’s universe.

Masterpiece??? Maybe. Epic musical genre buster??? Definitely.

Peace 🙏

@ Dan - Thanks for the supporting arguments/claims Dan. just posted as TW CotM @

"Now that Dylan has burst forth from behind his many masks and gifted the world with his incandescent new song about the assassination, with a title taken from Hamlet, from the mouth of the ghost of the dead King of Denmark –“Murder Most Foul “– we have entered a new day in an odd way.

For those who have wondered over the years if Dylan had “sold out,” here is their answer. For those who have wondered if he would go to his grave reciting the words of T.S. Eliot’s J. Alfred Prufrock – “I am no Prince Hamlet nor was meant to be” – here is Hamlet’s booming response.

Not only does this song lay bare the truth of the most foundational event in modern American history, but it does so in such a powerfully poetic way and at such an opportune time that it should redeem Dylan in the eyes of those who ever doubted him."

@ Abner - arguments pls?

Yes, I think Dan has some great insights. I missed his comments. I also see your points Thrasher. I am not very good with music, in fact I am really quite ignorant. I tend to look at the lyrics.

@Abner : Sometimes when I read song lyrics without the music I miss some of what was intended. The melody and delivery of the words tend to heighten the emotional intention behind the actual words. The musicality of the delivery as it were. I hope that makes sense.

Peace 🙏

Dan a vital point. Neil's lyrics without the music are sometimes insipid or hopelessly simple. Even though Dylan won a nobel prize for literature, I don't think many serious poets take him as a "poet" simpliciter but as a "lyricist." I'm always inclined to look at words, always words, and I admittedly do not understand music. But I am in enthusiastic agreement with your point. I am going to listen to Dylan's song again with your commentary and ideas. thanks
