"FREE THE MUSIC": Update on Neil Young Archives (NYA) Times-Contrarian
The Neil Young Archives (NYA) has updated the "NYA Times-Contrarian" page with a "FREE THE MUSIC" article.
The article is a passionate endorsement of the Xstream service which powers the NYA website. Also, the article discusses frankly how industry greed has stifled a generation of music artists. The bottom line for Neil is that "all songs should cost the same, regardless of technology."
Previously, we reported on articles which discuss the Roxy release and the Upcoming Alchemy release. Also, detailed plans for the NYA rollout in 2018. One of the more intriguing announcements is NYA's Movie Night which will feature one film from the Archives each week. Maybe "Trunk Show" someday?!

Talk is cheap. I prefer a tangible product and for me that will always be vinyl first and CD second. I know I’m in the minority but I don’t care. What happens when the cloud explodes and everything in it disappears ?
Our technology has far surpassed our evolution.

Could not agree more on your point that technology has surpassed human's ability to manage responsible. That day came in Hiroshima Japan over 70 years ago -- if not sooner.
The gods probably resent giving us fire. We seem to be pretty careless creatures.
Well, we're hanging onto our vinyl and turntable, also. And when the lights go out, well, we're not sure. Maybe we'll just have to be content to look at the album covers and hum along?

I still don't have a clue WHY hi-res streaming or hi-res files are even necessary or desirable when the technology now exists and is affordably available to upscale low-res files to hi-res; to the point where Sony Japan's top sound people (AKA tech-brain hi-res enthusiasts) can't even map the difference on a graph, let alone hear it. If you are going to enjoy the placebo effect (and why not?), then it might as well be for ALL music and not just the minority of albums that were recorded in hi-res.
As usual recently, the actual music is subtly being hidden behind a smokescreen here, as though Neil no longer has the confidence in it to fend for itself in a chaotic world.
And yes, of course, new musicians do need ways to profit and thrive, of course they do. But constantly trying to re-invent the wheel isn't necessarily the way to get there. It starts with being generous and keeping your promises. And the songs themselves; let's not forget them.

Great to see you back Scotsman. Excellent points, and placebo effects is really the main frustration I have with technology and music. The human ear can only receive so much before it can’t distinguish any difference. Vinyl allows you to feel the music, not just hear it. CD’s have the portability and with a tube player that converts the digital signal back to analog they warm up considerably. For those who must have files then that technology already exists.
Thanks Thrashers for supporting my frustrations with this madness. As I have mentioned previously there are bands that have made their music available for years now. I have over 200 Grateful Dead shows and over 300 Pearl Jam concerts as well. The Zappa family trust is releasing tons of live shows by Frank Zappa and still we wait........ for Neil Young to allow his fans to experience his huge collection of live music and unreleased studio work. I am not going to live much longer. The time behind me is much greater than the time in front of me and my priorities are changing because of this reality and I’m convinced that the I will never hear most of this unreleased music in my lifetime.
Oh.....and when the power goes out you just get a generator to play the turntable.

..... I forgot to mention Dead & Company has every show they have played available to purchase on CD Download or Streaming. Miles Davis Bootleg Series continues to release more stuff and Bob Dylan has been releasing tons af archives over the years. For some reason these artists have found a way to make their music available without a Archive Website. Wake up Neil, it isn’t that difficult.

The Hendrix family have also been releasing unreleased music from Jimi, although slower than the ones mentioned above but it keeps coming. New unreleased music coming out this month and next from Hendrix, The Doors, Miles Davis and John Coltrane, and Dead & Company.
