I was there! Right up front. My third Neil show and maybe the best, mostly because it was an especially good crowd. It felt like the average age in the crowd was about 22. Yet, it was clear they were loving every moment, which speaks to Neil's staying power. The sing along during Rockin' In The Free World was as enthusiastic as I've ever heard. The place exploded during Helpless, particularly after that iconic opening line.
Tonnes of the classics, but a solid helping of new material. The new stuff was well received, though inevitably not as warmly as the hits. Still, I doubt highly that anyone was unsatisfied with the set list.
I know that there were some people unhappy the township allowed such a large event to take place. From what I read, the camping and parking partly took place on land zoned for farming. Maybe ironic given the content of Neil's new album. My impression was that it was a great event. The young people seemed well behaved, from my perspective. I should mention I too am one of the young people. I feel that some of the push back stemmed from some prejudicial attitudes about kids today. Sort of similar to some of the reaction to Woodstock. Also ironic? Protecting farmland is very important, but I feel the festival and township can work out a compromise for future years.
This was the best Neil show I've ever seen, and quite possibly the best of all time. Almost three and a half hours of Neil backed by one of the tightest bands he's ever played with?! I'M IN!!!
Loved the setlist variation from the rest of the tour. They were definitely in it to JAM on Friday night. Highlights were Cowgirl, Words, a nearly thirty-minute Down By The River, Mr. Soul, Unknown Legend, Winterlong, Don't Be Denied -- too many to name, really!
Neil getting a crowd of 30,000 to singalong with "YOU'RE JUST A FUCKUP!!!" was one of the best moments I've ever witnessed at a show.
I hope/imagine we'll get some more dates soon!!
