RARE: Neil Young - "Time Off For Good Behavior"
Here's an outtake from Neil Young's "Old Ways" sessions, "Time Off For Good Behavior."
The song is about Neil Young's brother Bob Young and his run in with the law back in the early 1980's. As Neil sings:
"My brother went to prison
He's in Kingston doin' time
He got seven years for sellin'
What I've been smokin' all my life
Time off for good behavior"
My, how the times they are a changin'. Now if only we could all have time off for good behavior then we'd all be free...
Bob Young appears in Neil Young's 2012 film Journey's, directed by Jonathan Demme.

Great song. That whole "Old Ways" era was brilliant, in my opinion!
Went to a Neil show in London Ontario, and brought along my mint, original, copy of Harvest. Was out by the buses before the show and Bob and his wife came over to a bunch of us and were amazingly kind enough to take an armload of stuff in to be signed. I went back out to the buses after the show and was waiting anxiously with the other guys to get my album back. Bob and his wife handed everything out, but my album wasn't there! I was a little panic stricken and gingerly tried to flag him down and describe what I had sent in. He then went back into the arena, winded his way back to where ever Neil had sat and signed the stuff and returned outside and handed it to me.
I saw him outside Massey Hall in the crowd last year, and I could tell he recognized me, but couldn't place from where. That endeared him to me even more. Pure gold.
Great song. a couple of great guys.
I've spoken with Bob briefly about four times in total and he was courteous and friendly on all the occasions. Most recently I was able to pass him an Advance Reading Copy (ARC) of "Young Neil" to him after the screening of the director's cut of "Human Highway" at the Toronto International Film Festival last fall. He said he would give it to Neil. (Later I was thrilled when Neil signed another ARC of "Young Neil" I had with me.)
