Photo Insert from Time Fades Away album by Neil Young

Time Fades Away LP Poster Insert

Last week, we posted on the Vinyl Giveaway: Time Fades Away by Neil Young (see post for details on how to win a free vinyl copy.).

We received a note from Dave Zimmer, an esteemed chronicler of CROSBY, STILLS & NASH: The Biography, as well as, numerous other publications. Dave mentioned that his TFA copy had a photo insert which we were unfamiliar with. Most are familiar with the full lyrics sheet insert (see below) but not the photo of Neil Young holding a rose carnation included in some early copies of TFA.

We thought that we had tracked down all of the artwork for Time Fades Away, but it seems we were mistaken.

From a comment by BecauseSoundMatters:
The first pressing did not include the word "stereo" on the labels, later pressings did.

This recording was mastered 16-track direct to disc by computer - Aug. 22 & 23, 1973

MS 2151 on spine and record label.
Matrix / Runout (A): MS 2151 31632-RE-2M
Matrix / Runout (B): MS 2151 31633-RE-2E

I don't have a copy of TFA that comes with a large poster of Neil. Never have seen it. I do have a copy with a pictured inner sleeve. One side has Neil with flying V and band. the other side just Neil with Gretch and song/ recording information. Also have the first US pressing and there's only the lyric sheet.

And then there's the whole story on the rejected TFA cover (see above) with the full color inner sleeves that were later used for a German pressing.

Then, there's the story of the scene from Cameron Crowe's film "Almost Famous", which re-creates the Time Fades Away album.

I bought Time Fades Away on the day of its release. It came with the lyric sheet but no poster nor an inner sleeve photo. The store did have the poster hanging on the wall, and I asked if I could have it. The clerk took it down, folded it, and handed it to me. I put it up on my classroon wall the following day. One of my students really liked the poster, so at the end of the year I said, "Mo, would you like that poster?" His face lit up, and he left the room with it. It made my day. I haven't seen that poster since that day until this morning on this site. My copy does not say STEREO on any part of it, and all the numbers match except for the 2L in the deadwax on Side 1 and the 2M on Side 2 Discogs does not list this as such when I checked it out there. Until fairly recently I laways thought when I bought an lp on the day of release that I was getting a first pressing, but that is not always true. By the way, Neil is the only artist I consistently buy on release day.

Thanks Anonymous! I think you just solved the Times Fades Away poster mystery! Looks like it was a promotional poster for record stores. What a nice poster and what a great story.
About the matrixnumbers from Wikipedia: The most important part of the extra information is usually the cut number, which is a suffix to the main number. For example, matrix number 12345 is seen on a label, but examination of the run-out groove area reveals number 12345–3, which indicates this is the third cut of this side. It is not unusual to find records with a different cut number on each side.
Sides are recut for various reasons. Record stampers can only be used to make so many copies before they become worn, and a new cut is required. Stampers can also become damaged from handling.

I do have a US version with 2L on both sides.
By the way, Neil is the only artist I consistently buy on release day.

Thanks for the clarification and kind comments, BSM! Just writing that post has put me into a nostalgic mood back to the days of going to record stores on a regular basis and always awaiting release days. For the most part those were also the days when the clerks were into the music as much as the customers. FWIW, the store was Ladds in Worcester, MA, - Ladds is long gone, but perhaps the clerk will see this if he's still around and visits here. He was most gracious to give me the poster. Most days I have to ask myself what day it is or what I did a moment ago, but I've no trouble remembering a story like this. Must be really important to me!

Isn't it time for that Time Fades Away Part 2 release that Neil was talking about?

My copy has the same notations except side 1 has RE2 K and side 2 Re2 J. Inside was Judy the lyric sheet

I meant to say inside was JUST the lyric sheet. Sometimes this computer thinks it knows what I want to say before I finish typing and I don't catch it.

So...I'm confused. Does the vinyl being given away have that Neil Young photo insert or just the lyrics?

The vinyl comes with the large lyrics poster, no photo insert. It seems that the photo insert is actually just a promo poster.

In my early days of collecting "Neil Stuff" when Lost Dog Collectibles was first starting out, I bought 7 of the TFA picture inner-sleeves from another collector. They were rumoured at the time to have been rejected by Neil or whoever as not "bootleg" looking enough, hence the paper inner sleeve that matched the giant "butcher paper" looking lyric sheet. That look seemed to be more in keeping with the spirit of the album. Of all the zillions of copies of TFA I have seen, I have NEVER seen one with the picture inner sleeve. That doesn't mean they don't exist I still have my 7 sleeves!!. I've got a couple of the posters too. An historic shot if there ever was one. Bring on the Archives volume 2!! Because you know how time fades away.....
