Here's The Review of the Moment Neil Young's Psychedelic Anthems - No Depression Americana and Roots Music by Charlie Bermant:
But this night, standing in toward the back of the general admission section at Key Arena in Seattle with the monster video screens in equidistant view, something clicks. In the middle of "Ramada Inn," an astounding track from Psychedelic Pill, the auditory thrill reminds me why I bought into all this stuff. It's the music, stupid. The extraordinary noise that occurs when Neil makes when he brings some of his friends to play in your town. These sounds make everything else superfluous. If not for this music he'd be just another scraggly guy on YouTube singing "Down By the River" to the mirror and the book would be a waste of time. Thanks Jay & Charlie!
Young's unpredictability and variety is what makes him most interesting, you never know what to expect. Even so, there is a notion that for all his left turns into country, techno, big band, solo electric and whatever else he may try his work with Crazy Horse represents the peak of a vast musical mountain he has built throughout the years. Assign any superlative you want. For me this represents the Holy Grail of Rock and Roll, representing the most astounding , exhilarating noise I'll hear for some time.
For you, it could be just noise.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers covered Everybody Knows This is Nowhere in Seattle last night. They performed it well, as they recently did in the studio for an EP. Having recently seen Neil at the same venue, I must say: Neil unleashed many more megatons of music, despite the RCHP show being fantastic. Alan G in Seattle
It was great to see Neil in Seattle, but as a woman who's a longtime fan, he really put me off with his official video of She's Always Dancing. It makes me think that Neil is a progressive about cars but prefers to be an old school pig about women. Even tho on his site he quoted Michelle Obama about women protecting their progress thru voting, and even tho the lyrics seem to be all about a woman dancing for the love of it free from sexual connotations, he slaps this ugly near porn, women-exist-to-sexually-arouse-men face on it. Showing the inner pig, kind of like Romney's 47% comment. But I guess most of his fans are men anyway. I guess I shouldn't be looking to a 67 year old rock star for an enlightened view of women. Disappointing but revelatory.
To anonymous@09:43
"Near porn" !!!???
I would say that a naked woman dancing with feather fans is near porn.
Tho maybe for most men, near porn is no twat shots?
Sounds like somebody needs to get laid...
I guess the progressive females won't be satisfied until all women look like Elana Kagan or Janet Napolitano...
Sorry but Neil is clearly a fan of the female form - as are most normal human beings both male & female...
The 'Angry World' video also has an attractive female dancer in it...oh the horror!
My sex life is very satisfying, thanks. I guess you voted for Romney. Who lost. But that's a typical snickering way to try to put me down and invalidate my original comment. Women are used to that sort of treatment. There are many beautiful, progressive, nice and friendly heterosexual women who will fight for being treated with dignity. I guess you haven't been to the Northwest much. And there are some genuinely progressive men who don't need to suppress or objectify women to feel better about themselves or have good sex.
The other point which I don't expect to be addressed is the idea in the video that women exist to please men. Objectification Exhibit A.
You are correct in that I voted for the human being who loves the United States.
I did not vote for the anti-capitalist narcissistic a-hole-in-chief. (I know I'm a racist, right?)
Your self-righteous anger bleeds right through cyber-space...
How is a woman dancing in a video equated with your assertion that women exist to please men?
I thought progressive liberals support an 'anything goes' attitude toward everything in society.
You know - gay marriage, abortion, etc. I know you think that's all well and good, right? Murder babies on-demand is ok,right? It's "choice".
Yet you get your panties in a wad over an attractive woman dancing in an artistic video?
lol...typical misplaced priorities from a lefty in these dark days in modern America.
Nice to hear your sex life is fine though...
Why don't the 2 of you take your ranting somewhere else
Getting your panties in a wad is another phrase that attempts to belittle and invalidate women. You obviously have big wounds that you're licking. From start to finish, the women in the video are clearly objects performing for men's sexual appetites. Women parading with name sashes. Choose your flavor. Women in boxes stamped handle with care. Select your favorite present. And of course the boxes that weren't chosen are pouting. Women doing hood dances. Choose your favorite meal.
Which is not what the song seems to be about.
Anon 11:23:00 - Sat here slack jawed contemplating how to respond to our new friend who finds NY's recent video so evil. Thx for saving me the time. Neil sexist? Sweet geezus, methinks some people are perpetually angry and looking for an axe to grind with anything male related. (I'm waiting for her to start comparing Pegi to Tina Turner for cryin' out loud.) Makes as much sense as some of her other gibberish on offer.
Now about those 'Peppers...Any word on them working on A Man Needs A Maid? heh.
Thx Thrasher (and 'ette) for what you do here.
From the Great White North.
dear Anon - you are taking this video a bit too seriously!! Actually I find it quite ironic.....We should ask Pegi Young what she thinks about it. Maybe she is already going for divorce.......
Please don't put words in my mouth. I can speak for myself. I didn't call the video evil. I just said it was piggish. If you can't tell the video is sexist, you're a typical male.
By the way, I have been called stunningly gorgeous, so don't think I'm doing without or jealous of beautiful women. And people generally like me and think I'm kind and fun. And I love to dance. This is all about the final frontier in human rights: womens rights. And it's a battle. As evident here, Neanderthal attitudes are rampant. But each generation women progress further. Don't forget black men got the vote before women. Hey, I come from a state with a female governor and 2 female senators. And neighbor Melinda Gates is a role model for womens advancement. Sorry guys, but white males and their regressive ideas are in descendency.
And I don't care in the least what Pegi thinks. Thanks, though.
I am a Northwesterner and a liberal, and I'm wondering why an automatic connection is being suggested between one's opinions about women and one's voting preferences. I also don't see the relevance of whether one's preferred candidate won or lost. If Obama had lost, would my vote for him invalidate my distaste for sexism? Answering a perceived stereotype with another stereotype doesn't seem to help the dialogue.
Well, if you don't know that angry white men are the Republican base, you don't follow politics very closely. We just had a long election cycle filled with white Republican men making ignorant comments and threatening to and sometimes carrying out aggressive actions against women on reproductive and other issues. Overturning Roe v Wade? Legitimate rape? Womens bodies being able to shut down pregnancy from rape? Rape pregnancies God's will? Mandatory vaginal ultrasounds in Virginia and PA before abortion?
You are obviously a male. You may call yourself a liberal, but that is not evident. No real liberal went thru this election cycle thinking it was a stereotype to call the Republican base sexist. It's not a stereotype. Just ask your favorite pollster. That is quantifiable.
Although this conversation is way off topic, I still wanted to add my two cents... I am shocked at the responses that Anon 09:43:00AM is getting. I think she has a valid point that the video for She's Always Dancing really is quite backward, and I'm surprised no one has jumped in to AGREE with her yet. It seems there are a lot of people who are still living in the stone age (add me to the list of people who cannot STAND that "panties in a twist" remark.. it is SO demeaning and condescending).
That said, I don't really know what the video means, and it is possible that it is meant to make a point about how backward those attitudes are, but who knows? It doesn't affect how I feel about Neil's music, because it remains pretty awesome. And like ANON 9:43 said, the song doesn't seem to have these backward connotations, so maybe it's just someone's dumb idea for a video, and nothing more.. I don't know who directed the video, but it wasn't necessarily Neil himself. In any case, it's generally a good idea to separate the art from the artist, because there are a lot of people who might let you down if you really get to know them. And why bother getting let down? It is what it is. People are who they are, but if they contribute something positive to the world, and try (through other means) to create positive change, then that's something. In other words, nobody's perfect.
Lastly, Anon 9:43 later said (at 12:06) "If you can't tell the video is sexist, you're a typical male." As a male, I must say I find that unfair. Please remember that it's not "men" who treat women badly; it's SOME men. If you are open to that way of thinking, you might be surprised at how many men are actually nice, normal, and decent people (hopefully, anyway!).
I myself am breathtakingly handsome and I voted twice once for Obama and once for Romney all the time dancing while feeding helpless orphans...blah blah blah blah blah
I just want to chime in to say I totally agree with Anonymous@09:43, Neil does seem to have an idealized view of women and doesn't always portray them in the best light. I don't think he's misogynist but he does come from a different era (he's 67 after all) and may not realize what he is communicating through such images.
It's funny reading some of the knee-jerk responses to her post, people think they are critiquing her when they are actually exemplifying the very point she is making. Bravo!
And to @philnovo, isn't this the very place to have this kind of discussion?
John
Thank you cossplusin. That is most gracious of you. You sound like a friend.
I know some really great men. They certainly do exist and make my world so much better. But I do stand by my observation that they are not typical.
I also agree that Neil's music is great. I love the song. We know an official video would not go out without his approval. I'm confident he was pleased with this. I'm not sure why. But I also agree that he tries to do good in the world. I might like him in person, and I might not, but I do adore him as well as his music.
Thank you, John. You guys redeem my faith in men. I agree Neil is from another era. Prevailing attitudes take generations to change, and he probably doesn't recognize that it's offensive.
I love that picture. It is epic. I didn't see the Seattle Show, but I did see him the next night in Vancouver and it absolutely blew my mind.
As for the above comments... this is a Neil Young blog. If you guys are going to have a spat about Democrats and Republicans, and start insulting eachother, can you do it on one of the THOUSANDS of political blogs on the net? Enjoying a coffee and reading Neil Young news, the last thing I want to read is two parties insulting each other ad nauseum. It doesn't work, it just gets everyone riled up and angry. You guys have already had your election. Put on some tunes and let the good times roll.
Cheers,
T.
Yikes?!
Talk about waging heavy wheat?!
You turn away from the screen for a few minutes and look what happens?
We were going to have everyone who wanted to go off on this topic on the SAD vid take it to another thread but then realized that we never posted the video.
So in the interest of trying to move this discussion elsewhere, take it to Neil Young News: OFFICIAL VIDEO: "She's Always Dancing" - Neil Young & Crazy Horse.
Please, keep it civil and respectful.
peace
