That said, I don't really know what the video means, and it is possible that it is meant to make a point about how backward those attitudes are, but who knows? It doesn't affect how I feel about Neil's music, because it remains pretty awesome. And like ANON 9:43 said, the song doesn't seem to have these backward connotations, so maybe it's just someone's dumb idea for a video, and nothing more.. I don't know who directed the video, but it wasn't necessarily Neil himself.As for us? Mainly, we sing about waging heavy wheat.
In any case, it's generally a good idea to separate the art from the artist, because there are a lot of people who might let you down if you really get to know them. And why bother getting let down? It is what it is. People are who they are, but if they contribute something positive to the world, and try (through other means) to create positive change, then that's something. In other words, nobody's perfect.
But, given that the video in question uses stock footage from another time and place, we're not sure how much we can project into today's context.
Times change, things remain the same...
All we are saying is give civil, respectful discourse a chance.

It's not that complicated. Neil gets obsessed by something and then he works it. This year it is old school kaleidoscopes and miscellaneous random clips from the early days of cinema. It may be all about devolution because he’s made a kaleidoscope, which is by definition about colors, B&W.
Everything Neil does is a reference to something Neil has done. Think of the red suspenders he’s wearing this year. They go back to the Rust Never Sleeps tour. For all we know they may go back to memories he has of Omemee.
It’s all one song.
Well... I really liked the picture on the other post. I was going to comment, but it appears the comments have been locked.
Neil is Neil. The great thing is that he inspires so much impassioned dialogue from people.
There are a few of those photos, anyway - Sandy Horne posted (or commented on, or shared) some on her facebook account.
Fantastic photos - I haven't seen such amazing photos of Neil in quite a long time.
Kudos to the photographer.
As for Neil's portrayal of women. I believe that there's an ironic element to all of these videos - using old footage to comment on current social issues. IMO, the portrayal of women and men in the video is likely meant ironically, or as social commentary, and are not supposed to be taken at face value.
I appreciate feminist values, and fully support what some might call "militant feminism", so I'm all for a woman calling out Neil on perceived sexism. But I'd urge her to take another look at the video and try to read into it a little more while contrasting it to Neil's expressed social positions. I don't think it's meant to be what it seems to be.
I mean, remember the first video for ... I forget, one of the Americana songs. The banned one, that had the old footage of the woman throwing knives at her children?
I certainly don't believe that Neil supports throwing knives at children, and absolutely believe that the video was meant to be a social comment.
I only support throwing knives at ugly children.

Also, I'd like to add that this shouldn't be viewed as anything but a historical comment. The use of these videos, IMO, is to simply point out the differences in our attitudes between the way we are now and the way we were then.
Seriously, the women coming out of the boxes and dancing, like so much purchased merchandise, to me points out either A) the stark contrast between social attitudes when the film was made vs. now, or B) the similarities of the same (it could likely be construed both ways).
Also, the video footage itself, with women coming out of boxes, again like so much merchandise, could be a comment on the sexual and social attitudes of the time it was made. It could easily have been made by someone who thought women shouldn't be treated like merchandise, or property, or things.
There are a lot of ways to look at this, but honestly I don't believe that Neil is using it just because he thinks it's "cool", or because he likes to oggle cute women like some old coot.
Though I suppose that could be possible, I dunno. Being a man, I have a hard time comprehending the intricacies of social behavior as experienced by women, and in some ways I feel unqualified, as I lack the perspective of having ever been a woman.

Well , seeing the box being delivered to Oskosh, Wi kinda surprised me for sure.Living in Oshkosh Wi,I never have received mail delivered in this form before.I imagine no one else in my neighborhood hasn't either.Back in those days (the video looks like it's from the 40's or 50's), maybe it's someone's idea of being tougue-in-cheek.I can see it not agreeing with some.I could see NYCH appearing at the Leach Amphitheatre here though.A couple of thousand in the audience would work nicely.
Most people think Sample and Hold was about the future. Maybe it was a historical retelling of a male order dancer ring (sic) in that happened in OshKosh in the early 50's. Maybe it happens there every 100 years in the 50's, 1850s, 1950s, 2050s ++

I was very surprised when I read that some found the video as 'near porn', and even more surprised when political views entered the discussion (I am French 'left wing' and I would probably be considered as a 'communist' in USA). No, I don't think that a woman dancing with feathers fans is 'near porn'!
I definitely think that this video is funny and it does not mean that I support how women were considered decades ago (and still today in some countries). I also do not think that it does reflect Neil's opinion on women; he's been using old time movies for his videos since Americana, and this one is about women dancing!
Just my 'French' opinion (but French are dirty pigs, aren't they?!)

And your comment on this video makes perfect sense. If anything, it's served the purpose of at least opening an interesting dialogue on society's treatment of women both now and then.
