Neil Young & Crazy Horse Alchemy Tour 2012 Continues

Neil Young & Crazy Horse's Alchemy Tour 2012 will continue on Saturday in Seattle, WA.

With that in mind, here's a fun little video that's a montage of fan reactions from the Weld 1991 tour.

Also, what might we look forward to on the third leg of the North American tour based on what we've seen and heard since August?

Sugar Mountain - Neil Young Set Lists
(Click photo to enlarge)

Thanks to Tom over on Sugar Mountain, we can get a pretty good idea of what to expect... unless we get the unexpected.

There have been 22 different songs performed with most shows averaging about 13 total songs. The following songs have been played at almost every 2012 concert:

  • Love And Only Love
  • Powderfinger
  • Born In Ontario
  • Walk Like A Giant
  • The Needle And The Damage Done
  • Twisted Road
  • Ramada Inn
  • Cinnamon Girl
  • F*!#in' Up
  • Hey Hey, My My (Into The Black)

So are there any other reasons to catch the next leg of the Neil & Horse tour? Why yes, according to NPR's Ann Powers. From Go See The Old Guys: Neil Young, Bob Dylan And Bruce Springsteen Are Still Killing It Live:
Neil Young made me write this.

Before last Thursday, when ol' Shakey and his golden garage band Crazy Horse stomped through my local amphitheater, the last thing I'd thought I'd be excited about was a bunch of guys hovering around 70, playing loud rock and roll into the night. I knew I'd love the Crazy Horse set — it was getting great reviews, the new album Psychedelic Pill is cool, and Young's the tinkering type who never stops challenging himself. But later, I found myself thinking about how Young's impressive vigor doesn't separate him from his peers — it's actually characteristic of the very acts that walked like giants in the 1960s, and whom you'd expect to be delivering little but nostalgia now.

...

Yet as Crazy Horse leaned in close and pushed forward, resonances from every previous Neil Young era floated through the music's distortion. I laughed when Young theatrically donned a flannel shirt before initiating "F*!#in' Up," an album track from his twentieth studio release — but I also thought, it's true, this dude did invent the 1990s (rockwise at least). Not only his pals Pearl Jam but Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth and Nirvana wouldn't have done what they did without his example. By focusing on new material and then juxtaposing the few old faves included with less familiar songs that share their main qualities, Young's current set lists make such insights more accessible.

Can't wait for Seattle, I've seen ny with every band he's toured with now my kids are fans. They have seen him on last couple tours but never with the horse. What a treat they are in for!

Duane,

I'm in the same boat as your kids. at 26 I've had the chance to see Neil twice, once for the Chrome Dreams II tour (Ambulance Blues!!) which I drove to Seattle for, and the other in Vancouver the following year. Two very different shows, both were amazing. But the Horse has been on my bucket list ever since Greendale, which for one reason or another I wasn't able to see. I'm pinching myself now. Sunday night in Vancouver! I know my old man would have loved to be there with me, and when they start to sing Love and Only Love I'm sure wherever he is, he'll start dancing.

Will see show at MSG. Seen Neil several times, but this will be the first time with the horse. Definitely a bucket list thing for me, and really pumped about the new material. Just amazing.

For my warm-up I'll have to "settle" for The Who next week, which I have never seen. Sandwiched in between is my 30th high school reunion.

Perhaps Driftin' Back is an apt theme song for me over the next few weeks. No doubt these old guys can still rock.

Been taking some listens to Psychedelic Pill to and from work. Its really thick stuff. Rivals "Change Your Mind" and Cortez for get-lost-in-the-emotion-of-the-tune-ability. Gotta have Ontario and For the Love of Man in there to come up for air, but, afterward, I haven't really come up for air, rather, I've had some good big picture wholesomeness replenished. I love Psychedelic Pill's reverb, man that tune rips at full volume. I originally was put off when I heard the album versions compared to the live boot versions. Now I'm not noticing that so much, I'm just getting in tune with where Neil was when he was orignally laying these cuts down. Its a great record. I thought the other day about how this song is going to stand on its own after 5 or 20 years go by. I always look back at how Sleeps With Angels and Broken Arrow have some of the absolutely most powerful emotional rides in the whole collection. Ramada Inn and Walk Like a Giant are right there with them. I also really love hearing some of the newer characteristics of Neil's singing that are similar to Greendale, LWW and Fork in the Road. And She's Always Dancing, another great song that sounds different than any other song I've ever heard from Neil. It just grooves.

But here's the coolest thing. The Ramada Inn near the Grapevine, I think its this place:
Ramada Limited -
9000 Countryside Ct, Lebec, CA

Looks like we have a new Rustie destination!

@Anon .... "Settle for the Who" ...? ... How dare you!...lol... I'll be "settling" at MSG as well. I saw them do Qudrophenia back in 96 and it was fantastic to say the least. I am so psyched to see Neil too. I've got decent seats but I am searching high and low for "floor west" tickets. Looking forward to meeting some great new friends... here's to everyone having a great show... cheers!
