PSYCHEDELIC PILL Streaming
UPDATE: OK, we got it working now. The plugin install requires rebooting.
***
It would seem some folks are having trouble with the PSYCHEDELIC PILL stream on neilyoung.com.
We have only made one attempt thus far without luck. We admit we were a bit thrown on our 1st try by the statement "To get a tutorial on how to install Java, click here". We have Java running (like most folks running various common apps) so didn't realize this required a special plugin called Orastream.
So we downloaded Orastream and installed but no streaming audio yet. It may require browser restart or re-boot?
How about others?
It seems folks Internationally are having trouble, as well.
Let us know what browsers are working and any other helpful tips in comments below.

Didn't work for me. Firefox on a Mac. I'd like to know how to uninstall that orostream plugin. I can't find it.
JimB - see the link at bottom:
"To get a tutorial on how to install Java, click here".
I installed it and got it running in Chrome (running v.22), but the stream was really choppy.
It kept trying to recalculate my bandwidth, and then I got a "connecting..." message, and then the audio would come back, and the whole process would repeat.
I attempted to close the browser and go back in, put in my email again, and then the refresh didn't work.
I tried using Firefox (v.16), and the screen wouldn't refresh to the player on that one either, so no luck. I've entered my email address like 5 times, if that makes any difference.
I've uninstalled Orastream, and am prepared to start over.
This appears to be a problem with Orastream. It's a good concept. It constantly evaluates available bandwidth and squeezes the stream appropriately, and claims to give the user an "uninterrupted" high quality audio experience.
But anyway, I will try again, and see what happens.
Anyone see Axl on Kimmel saying Neil was a powerhouse, is so strong?
Much respect Axl.
honestly, this so-called stream is a Piece of Crap! I have spent countless minutes trying to get this to work.....the one time i got the music to play, the song titles were not consistent with what was being played.
What an absolute piece of shit!
i will just wait to buy the CD.
I uninstalled the player then re-installed it. It works again for me. And, yes, choppy. Kind of a PITA, but I'm good with it. Can't wait for Blu-ray.
Have I mentioned "Born in Ontario" will be our new anthem? I WILL make it happen. ;)
i think I may have got this stream started and am happy(sad) to hear that i am not the only one having trouble. Tried again (25th time) with the other suggestions but still nothing. I have a 6 pack and no wife and baby tonight so it would be the best possible time to be cranking the Premiere of PP!!! Please, make this easier for me....
Works for me. PP sounds great looking forward to my vinyl arriving.
Works fine from ireland.
I am using Firefox,
Entered my e-mail address, then it updates the page(right hand side) giving you the option to download Ora Stream, which you have to launch and install,"i agree" etc, then got an "Installation sucessful" message.
Then you have to refresh the page and the player is there, it's called "ora stream".
It's a little different to normal players, so I would say thats why people might be getting confused.
now it works! cool. tks. a nice and psychedelic week-end to all Thrashers
Dammit. Okay, I'll try again tonight.
I updated Java, but only after I'd installed OraStream. I'll uninstall and re-install OraStream tonight and try to get it working again.
I wish Neil and crew would provide a link that goes directly to the player, so I don't have to (1) enter my email address, (2) click the download link, then (3) hit the refresh link, every time I try this process out.
I've received about 15 emails from Neil Young, "Thanks for signing up." Ha ha ha! Luckily, I'm happy to receive 100 emails a day from Neil, so I don't much mind that.
If I get it working and it's choppy, though, I won't listen. There's no way my first impression of Driftin' Back is going to be of it hitching and stopping every 5 seconds.
Can someone hit up AG about providing a solution to having to input your email and click the download link every time? I know they can't do anything about problems with OraStream, but they can surely uncomplicate the whole refresh thing to make it easier on us.
If your going to stream it just stream it - why put people through hell by registering, downloading proprietary software, take a tutorial and rebooting to make it run. I don't see any technological advantage in streaming it this way. I will wait for the CD
In Norway it's in store from today. I have been listening to the CD the last 5 hours. It gets better and better! Can't stop listening!

Anon 10:33 - I agree. I have always been happy with the album streams on Neil's website.
I do, however, understand their desire to present the product in the highest quality format possible, but having this kind of confusing multi-step process, and asking people to undergo the painful procedure of working with OraStream's plugin (which seems a bit "rushed to market", IMO)....
I honestly think it's going to stop like 75% of people who would otherwise listen to the stream from bothering with it at all.
But you know what? That's all okay. The path to progress is overgrown with complications, so it is to be expected, and I'm glad they're trying new things out, at least from a philosophical standpoint if not a practical one.
OMG, I just got it running here at my job!!!
Woo!!! And it's working fine!!!
Driftin' Back is @!&#$((( AWESOME AAAAAAHHHHH
There are tradeoffs between the buffering approach and this one.
I can stream it at work. it does hang every once in a while. But from my home network, it never connects. odd. too bad. i have better head phones and speakers at home.
the fact that quality varies as bandwidth changes is novel and might be forgivable if it never hung. Also, the first 5 seconds or so are crap as it tries to establish the bandwidth. And heaven forbid your bandwidth goes to zero.....which seems to happen at work now and then...then you get an ungodly noise.
I seem to have to reinstall the software every time I want to listen.
There's no classics on this album only new songs, dang (sorry had to do it)
Thanks Street, for letting us all know about that. I had been hoping to hear both Powderfinger and Cortez on this album, but alas, all we get are a bunch of brand new Neil Young & Crazy Horse songs. Bummeroo.
Don't bother, It's very disappointing.
It sounds nothing like Harvest.
it worked for my old Dell, XP, Mozilla after disabling the Norton and trying yet again . . .
it's labelled as 192k/24b, sure sounds ROBUST so we'll be driftin' back this weekend
PPill = Sign of Love w/ flanging ?
Wicked! - can't wait to here this on my CSW speakers full blast when the BRay comes (until PONO anyway)
its amazing. 35 seconds into drifting back and you could swear it was 1972. the vocal just has not changed. ok it has changed, but I think for the better. its a gift. thousands of concerts, no ear protection, and lots of weed, yet the vocal remains. the source remains. the gift keeps giving. I'm going to buy vinyl for the first time since 1992.
Hi, all, sorry for "hijacking" this thread, but I had to share my excitement--I just got an e-mail from Barnes & Noble saying they're shipping my "Psychedelic Pill" CD today, which if I'm lucky means I might even get it before the release date!
There's some really nice playing on this record, but could Neil have been any more lazy about writing the words?
With the exception of "Ramada Inn" and (to a lesser extent) "Walk Like A Giant," I'm pretty disappointed with this one lyrically.
The tutorial on how to install Java should be ignored as it throws most people off, looking at the previous comments - I had java turned off for both my Mac and windows and the streaming still works for me.
Follow the 3 steps and make sure to complete the installation of the OraStream plugin
It also says on the bottom of the page that at least Chrome 16, Firefox 11, IE10 or Safari 6 is required, so make sure you are on one of these browsers
I also found out that it is also not necessary to reinstall the player once you have at least one successful installation. To refresh the page, you need to press to download the installer, even if it has been downloaded previously. Somehow, the page does not allow to refresh in step 3 unless you press to download in step 1.
All the best to everybody who is still giving this a try!
As interesting as Java is, doesn't anyone want to comment on the actual album?
Interested to hear some thoughts.

I have to agree with the comment about the lazy lyrics. I love the groove on the first really really long song, Drifting Back, but the lyrics are so bad I'm almost embarrassed to listen to it. Previous albums that garnered such criticism such as Greendale seem like shakespeare masterworks compared to most of this album. I think NY should start getting stoned again and see if he can get a little more into writing like he used to. I love the music though; downright transcendental.
The music, the groove, it's fantastic! Walk Like a Giant is a new Hurricane, Powderfinger, even better. Ramada Inn is also there, with Hurricane. Powderfinger, Words, Down by the River, Cowgirl in the Sand. The rest of the CD is also terrific. This is not Shakespeare - of course - this is pure music, groove, feelings, this is a masterpiece. So beautiful.
Sounds like Neil's making us piss about with all this signing up, installing, rebooting, uninstalling, reinstalling, rebooting and renavigating in order to hear a choppy, low bit-rate version of his new album.
He's laughing at us, shaking his head, and waiting to reveal the glory and simplicity of Pono which makes all this nonsense seem like just that - nonsense. I eagerly await the delivery of my CD. It's currently the highest quality available to me.
