Neil Young on Twitter Highlights

(Click photo to enlarge)

Today, Neil Young took questions from fans on Twitter and it was quite amusing. As we all know, Neil Young is considered to be a "Social Networking Genius" who has always been ahead of the curve while behind the 8 ball.

Neil's Twitter session made some news and seems to have been a huge hit in the Twitter-verse. At one point, the hashtag #AskNeil trended up to the #2 position.

First, the news. Looks like a Europe tour next year. And, yes, Time Fades Away will finally be re-released ... on PONO ... when that technology is completed, manufactured and ready to be sold to the public. So any day now. (In the meantime, just sign the Release "Time Fades Away" Petition.)

And here some other random tweet highlights...

Q: Why does "Harvest" make me cry?

You can check all the tweets on Neil's Twitter page Twitter / neilyoung.

I'm no twit(terer), so it was a bit disorienting trying to follow the happenings. I think at one point though that Neil said that Axl Rose is going to be on a world tour with them, apparently the Crazy Horse Euro and beyond tour next year. I'm also pumped about PONO, I want to see what its all about. I've heard 192/24 etc and will be astounded when PONO tops its smoothness. Looks like Archives Vol 2 may be a PONO release with TFA being included or an option? Did you notice how you didn't see Neil and Archives guy at the same time??? Just kidding. Some. We need a ThrashersWheat chat with Neil.

Has anyone gotten the stream to work on a Mac? I guess I can wait for the CD to hit next week though, then it's just a matter of clearing the house of the wife and kids. I just wish the blu-ray was a simultaneous release (and that it included either the CD or a download code for a high-res or CD-quality download), so I don't have to buy the album two times to a) listen to it on the day it comes out and to transfer it to my digital players and b) enjoy the high-res/blu-ray sound (Neil's team - please consider this and help your fans avoid forced double-dipping).

Dean, which one was your tweet? I think the warner page was broken in some way, as it didn't display all the tweets and responses that you could see on Twitter...

Hey Dean, I saw your question yesterday when Neil first answered...very cool and good for you! I just happened to check emails around that time and had one from Neil about the Tweet session, so I checked it out and there you were. And a great answer from Neil about the VW Levitating Car; hope that he gets one someday or at least gets to drive one.

I had a '65 VW Notchback for a couple years back in the mid 70's, and that was the most unique car I have ever owned. Bought it after owning a couple Renault R10's (great for the gas embargo periods during the 70's!). The VW Notchback was commonly known as "The Canadian Volkswagen" because it was never exported to the US and (apparently) only came across the border from our friends up North. It had dual carburetors and was only a 1500CC engine, which was basically a poor man's Porsche engine. The electrical system was a 6 Volt, so it would never start once the temp got around 20 or lower; I'd park on inclines and get strangers to help me pop start the car during cold weather. The heat was almost non existent--got minor hypothermia during long drives--and it broke down at least once a month. Also totally lost my breaks once and flew through a red light with success.

But I really loved that car and remember it more than the other fifteen or twenty that I've owned in my lifetime (but I did love them all in their own way). I've owned other VW's that were more "usual" and reliable but none nearly as memorable. Sounds like the kind of car that Neil would totally love! And when I checked to see if it was really called a "notchback" (yes it was/is), found one for sale in Newport Beach. So Neil, if you happen to read this you might want to consider adding this to your barn. Well enough of my Fahrvergnugen...keep on rockin'!

@ Mr Henry.

I'm Canadian and owned a 72 VW Notchback back in the 80s'! I bought it with intentions of removing that Pancake motor to use in a dune buggy. It ran strong and we would drive it through the bush at night. It was never registered and one night it ran out of gas and I parked it in front of a friends house. It was winter and the city towed it since the plows were running and it had no plates. I tried to get it back but it would have cost more for the fees than the car was worth. Good bye Notchback... and my good tow-bar.
I could listen/share car stories all day. I'm now working on modding/restoring a 61' Falcon. My goal is to get in done and do some serious driving. I will also install a PONO. Bet Neil has a Falcon story. It seems everyone has a Falcon story. Some good, some bad.

If you ever want to share car stories, My info is on my google i.d. Thanks for sharing!

Are a lot of people having trouble with the album stream? I can't get it going. Tried on 2 computers. Why can't we just get one standardized online player so I don't need to download plug ins and new browsers and a bunch of crap every time I want to listen to an album? Looks like I'll just wait until Tuesday to buy the damn thing. Ugh.

Same shit over here. Busy all day to restore my computer after all updates and downloads for Neil. The link for the Java player goes to Orastream. Looks like they want to stream Pono sized files. Maybe they are streaming this already. I don't know... The good thing is I can still go to TW but it's kinda funny that NY dot com doesn't work for me anymore... it's all Neil's fault.

Can we get Archives Guy on the case for the stream? I am not a computer idiot and have gone through the steps laid out to stream but still can't get it to connect. I think I have entered my email address about 7x now, so I should have no excuse for missing any Neil news in the future but this seems like a hell of a lot of work for something that should take the click of one button. Just a fan that is excited to hear the new record but rather frustrated right now...not sure if being in Canada makes a difference but my buddy can't make it work either.

At 10/25/2012 02:05:00 PM, Blogger Tweck9 said...

I will be attempting to connect to Neil and crew's audio-stream tonight. We'll see how it goes. Sure seems like they like to complicate things.

I was perfectly happy with the way they've been doing the streaming thing for the past 5 or so years - just an automatic audio stream when you open the website.

But I suppose all this complicated browser-updating, plugin-installing, email-confirming frustration inducement is for the good purpose of accessing a higher quality stream.

I hope it works. I'll report back should I experience any problems with it. I'll probably report back should I not, anyway. Heck, I'll probably report back no matter what anyway. Unless the setup process accidentally causes me to be teleported to a mountaintop somewhere where I have no wireless access, which you all will know took place due to my sudden lack of participation here, so I'd appreciate if someone calls 911 for me and just lets them know of my unfortunate, accidental teleportation.

Neil and his people would probably want to know that everyone is having problems with the stream. What's the point of putting it out there for fans if nobody can hear it? Seems like they have been pretty good about responding to a better user experience in the past (ie MP3s along with the Blu Ray Archives purchase - which I think they got the idea from here). Not sure how to let them know other than posting here though. I am all for better quality files but need to be able to access them to enjoy it.

Dean that's amazing that you also had a Notchback...serendipity strikes again! And I love your comment about "...my good tow-bar". My '65 Notchback used to break down all the time and provided me with many such adventures. Way before the days of cell phones and "we'll be there w/in the hour" AAA, it could take me all day (or night) to get that car somewhere safe.

My dad was incredible and would always help me out when the Notchback would have troubles. But we didn't have a good tow-bar and I remember some real white knuckle trips with him pulling the car and me in the VW, trying not to smash into his van whenever we'd stop or go downhill. But again, I have so many great memories of that car and especially my dad helping me out, looking at me with that "here we go again" expression but never complaining and always ready to "get behind the wheel".

Sorry you lost your Notchback in a snowstorm, but at least that's another memorable time. Mine just finally stopped working and was towed away at some point for the last time...I honestly don't even remember when or how. And yes, it will be great to trade more car (and dog!) stories with you. Sounds like you're much more a mechanic than I am...which is crucial when you love the old cars. The '61 Falcon must be a beauty and much fun to work on. I learned to drive in a '62 Comet. It was my mom's car and she taught me when I was only 12 years old; we lived in the boonies and she thought it safest if I could drive "in an emergency". Of course, she was soon letting me drive the back roads home from shopping and such; that is until the State Trooper who lived a mile or so away saw me driving and stopped by for a chat with my mom!

Talk with you soon....

One quality that Neil has had throughout his career is mystique in addition to respect.

Unfortunately the mystique factor has been erased due to ridiculous tv appearances, interviews, and now a book?

A Twitter session?

Neil Young?

Geez...

I can only wonder what David Briggs would have though about the internet and all of the musical landscape changes that have come with it.

But I'm fairly confident that Briggs would have HATED to see this over-the-top media blitz that Neil is on.

The respect is still there my friends no doubt.

But that air of mystery surrounding the great Neil Young has faded away.

He freaking goes to Costco and uses an electric toothbrush...great...

What's next? Neil does a webcast from the ranch where fans can look around?

How about a VIP package through Live Nation with a laminate trinket to go with the $200+ ticket?

I know I'm crazy but the coolest thing Neil could have done would have been to take the Horse on a club tour. Not fancy theaters like he's been doing since 2007. Clubs.

Neil Young lives in the present and future tense. He is a comunicator, that's why he is using all media to contact the planet. I think it's a great move for him. He's broadcasting his knowledge, his memories, his stories, his music, his ideas, his dreams. He's a freaking radio station, beaming out to the world.

He is not the recluse of his youth. He has grown into himslef as folks typically do after 50 years of doing anything. AND he don't care what anybody thinks, he's told us that. So, Briggs could have either hung on for the ride and embraced it or have been tossed to the ditch as far as any other opinion to what Neil has taken on in the past several years. It doesn't look to me like Neil wants to be this mystery anymore, the shell has cracked and been discarded, it's all an open road forward it seams. And that is a treat for us. It's new and unususal too, no mystique, no guessing anymore.

I keep hearing about this go back, go forward decision we're gonna make in a couple Tuesdays with THE VOTE> Well, which Neil do YOU want?

At 10/27/2012 12:18:00 PM, Blogger thrasher said...

@SONY - we have to agree with you here on NY's opening up phase.

Go back and listen to Hitchhiker from the Twisted Road tour. We found the song's inclusion in the setlist to be a real keystone to this past, present future state that his career has entered.

"Then came paranoia
And it ran away with me
I couldn't sign my autograph
Or appear on TV
Or see or be seen
See or be seen
Or see or be seen."

That was a past he no longer wants.

He's now comfortable with is gift and wants to share it. maybe the time has come that folks better understand where he's coming from. We've caught up.

yes, mystery & mystique is cool. Sometimes its just a cover for a lot paranoia & uncertainty.

Embrace the openness. Appreciate the gift and pass it on.

peace
