From Neil Young and Crazy Horse Launch Tour With New Tunes in Albuquerque | Music News | Rolling Stone By Andy Greene:
"The title of the next song was unclear – it could be "Walk Like a Giant" – but it begins and ends with Young and Sampedro whistling together into the mic, and it's one of the most powerful songs Young has written in years. The feedback coda on this one must have lasted a full five minutes, with Molina pounding on his drum kit like an invading warrior. Here's hoping the rest of the new disc lives up to the promise of this one. "

They had given all they had for something new"

just dawned on me last night as I watched the moon rise than this tour was starting out on a full moon.

Let's get this thing started!

Not only is Neil starting the tour right after a Full Moon, but there will be another one--a Blue Moon--at the end of this month. And the next month with two won't be until 2015. Last night's moon was very beautiful; added to my enjoyment during a late night drive down from Maine.

Any guess as to what song he'll open with? I'm going with Jesus' Chariot...just a hunch.

So excited! I've got pit tickets for tonight! I haven't seen Neil since Aspen August '03!!! Although I am concerned -- the concert starts at 8, and Los Lobos opens -- how much time does that give Neil, particularly the non-Americana stuff (if curfew is 11)? I love the Lobos but I wish the Horse were playing the whole time

Los Lobos will be great, so just enjoy their set. David Hidalgo is the 2nd coolest person in rock and roll (after Neil of course). Hope they play something together...maybe Neil will come out to join in on Mas y Mas!

I met David and Louie early last year after a show. Both guys were very nice and friendly, even though they looked really tired and had an 8 a.m. flight home the next morning. Someone asked David "What are you looking forward to?" and his reply was "Playing with my grandchildren". Real as the day is long....

Rolling Stone is getting in on the action, with a What is Neil Young's Best Album? poll posted today:

Looks like a great issue of RS, with Cranston and Paul on the cover (Albuquerque again!) and information on Dylan's upcoming new album (which I am greatly looking forward to).

Only a few more hours!

I really hope Neil & the Horse play some deep cuts this time around. I mean, Powderfinger, Cortez, Hurricane, etc. are all great songs, but Neil has so many other great songs he could play (literally hundreds). How about Don't Be Denied, Revolution Blues, Shots, I'm The Ocean, etc. In other words, songs we don't get to hear too often live. Of course he can play whatever he wants (and I'll love it!) but I'm just hoping for a little more variety in this tour than we're usually accustomed to. Ok, rant over.

Arrived from windsor ontario at 10:00 am. Leaving the airport to check out the Pavilion close by came across Neil's tour bus broken down on the side of the road. Can't miss the Silver Eagle with the Zuma plates. Asked the driver if he needed a hand, said he was good. Put Zuma in the CD player. Already a cool trip.

alabama shakes? media darlings. please give honest review of their set - don't miss it red rocks goers - they do not suck. reminds me of greendale in DC in 03 - some chick named Lucinda Williams opened - and she rocked....and she became famous....

Shakes are the real deal-old school rockin' soul, blues, w/a modern edge. Saw them in Richmond, VA a month ago, Patterson Hood knows what he's talking about. I'm flying in to Denver tomorrow to hang w/some old, dear friends. Then 2 nights at Red Rocks for the 1st time ever. I'd like to hear some of the Americana songs jammed and stretched out on like the Horse Back video. And then anything else Neil feels like playing. Letting the horse out of the barn after ten years you know the fur is gonna fly!

@Marcus - Short show? LAOL was 13 minutes, Walk Like a Giant was 19 and Every Morning Comes the Sun was 17 - that's 49 minutes right there. If the other 12 songs averaged even 5 minutes each, you're pushing two hours. (And by the way, Alabama Shakes are opening both Red Rocks shows.)

Only one Americana song... but it's the best and most "horsefied" song from that album

Attended the show last night and expected a lot - got a lot more. This was the best, most fun, and finest Neil vocals/guitar playing ever. He acted like a young adult - with unbelievable energy and a rejuvenated voice. All of the new songs were great, no fabulous. 2 hours that seemed like 4. Threatenibg rain all around but just cooled off everything perfectly. If you get to attend the remaining shows you will not be disappointed. Converted my 13 year old son big time.

If you go onto the sugar mountain setlist page, they have a poster for Red Rocks. It says A Vinyl Evening with Neil. I don't know how much the set would change, but I'd like to see him mix up the classics. Throw in some Cowgirl.

I'm happy to report that the Horse is alive, thriving, and joyous. My ears are still ringing today from last night's glorious cacophony. I'm so happy.

I was lucky enough to be standing with a friend in the pit, directly front and center, about 10 feet from Neil, last night in Albuquerque. ABQ has been getting hit with triple digit temps, but thankfully clouds rolled in in the afternoon and provided surprisingly perfect weather for this occasion.

I wasn't sure how the Horse would sound after such a long layoff, but just a few seconds into the first tune, "Love and Only Love," my worries were eased and I shouted to my friend, "THIS SOUNDS SO FUCKING GREAT!" It was the Horse at its sonic best. As a Crazy Horse aficionado, it could not have sounded more wonderful. How perfect to see the Horse so close up. I would close my eyes to immerse myself in the magical guitar onslaught, and when I opened my eyes, it was such a visual treat -- almost a shock -- to see the Horse huddled up close right in front of me, like in my living room.

I wanted to convey something that has only been briefly touched on in the reports: I have never seen Neil and the Horse (whether live or in videos) so happy, particularly in the second half of the set. Neil was smiling ear-to-ear for much of the show, as was the rest of the Horse.

One cause of this is that Pancho kept kicking Neil in the ass. The first time he did this, Neil didn't seem amused, but that didn't deter Pancho, who quickly kicked his ass again. The second time, Neil couldn't hide a grin, and Pancho kept doing it, and Neil was so fucking joyous. I was thinking, "what happened to the Neil who always looks morose and angry?" This must have been Neil's carefree, happy twin brother.

The Horse was deliriously ecstatic. What a joy to see the first show of a tour, when it's all brand new for them! I've done it before, but it was so fun to flip Pancho off and to have him return the gesture during Fuckin' Up.

One thing that has not been reported, that was sweet to see -- at the end of the main set, I could see Pancho and Billy backstage. They were locked in a tight embrace, rocking back and forth, for about 15 seconds,. After nine years, it was their first show with the Horse and they were clearly so gratified. I was so happy for them. What a privilege to see such an emotional moment between two brothers of rock and roll! They had finally arrived back to their place of self-actualization -- it was as if they had been rescued from nine years stranded on a desert island.

The new songs were GREAT. Some of the most magical moments came as he sang about first hearing "the magic of Like a Rolling Stone" as well as the Grateful Dead on the radio. These lines elicited much approval from the crowd.

The new lyrics were phenomenal. He sang about wanting to change the world, but not quite getting there (or something to that effect). YOU GUYS WILL LOVE THESE SONGS!!!!

Neil put his heart and soul into the show, and clearly put his all into writing the new songs as well.

I had expected the first part of the show to be Americana stuff (just like the Greendale shows), and Neil played me for the fool by playing only one tune from the album!

On thing that this resident of the Land of Enchantment appreciated is that Neil ended the show by saying "Thank you New Mexico, Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Taos, Las Cruces." That was loved by the crowd.

What a magical evening! Seven wonderful world premieres! Eardrum-splitting, glorious Crazy Horse Sound! Neil Young happier than I've ever seen him, ten feet from me! A front and center experience that cannot be duplicated!

I SPENT $33 FOR MY TICKET! I HAVE NEVER SPENT A BETTER $33 IN MY LIFE!

As you can tell, I am in Crazy Horse glory right now!!

DO NOT MISS THIS TOUR!!!!!

Sorry, a few details that I omitted in my excitement to transmit my earlier review of ABQ to you all:

-Neil appeared to possibly be using a teleprompter. This was noticed by both myself and Expecting to Fly. The teleprompter seems to be halfway up Neil's mic stand. I can't prove that it's a teleprompter, but, like I said, I'm not the only Neil fan that noticed this. You can see the teleprompter on photos from last night's show. Apologies if I'm wrong, but Neil has earned the right to use this, given his massive canon and his advancing age.

-There were cameramen backstage filming the show.

-Towards the end of the show, a couple right next to us (front and center), who had come primarily to see Los Lobos, left early, remarking to me, "This is too loud for us." :-) This is the best thing she could have possibly said!

@Mother Nature on the Run, I'm originally from Southern Cali, but I live in Northern New Mexico now.

Kind of funny - toward the top of this thread, when someone was begging for the setlist several hours before the concert started, Coconozz replied: "Five new songs, rest old 2 1/2 hour plus show !!!!" Turned out to be a two-hour-plus show with five previously unheard songs ("For the Love of Man" and "Jesus' Chariot" were debuts, but both had been heard before). So what's the prediction for Red Rocks tonight?

At 8/05/2012 10:02:00 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

This was a transcendental concert. I loved the new song, where Neil said "I want to walk like a giant on the land" and "think about how close we came." How true those sentiments are. He will never lose his capacity to inspire. And Crazy Horse was outstanding, and the whole thing was electric. And I'm glad he DIDN'T play "Albuquerque." We know where we are. We wanted to hear where Neil is now, not where we are. And didn't he tell us where he is now? My, my, hey, hey!!! Thanks a lot, Neil and Crazy Horse, you made my night.
