Buffalo Springfield Book Two Wiltern Dates
Influencial rock band, Buffalo Springfield, are coming to Los Angeles for two dates! Recently reunited, the band consisting of Richie Furay, Stephen Stills, Neil Young, Rick Rosas and Joe Vitale will play two dates at the Wiltern on Saturday, June 4 and Sunday, June 6. Buffalo Springfield will also be headlining at this year's Bonnaroo Music Festival in Tennessee.

Personally, I'm not feeling the overwhelming positive emotions here. It just feels like CSNY minus Crosby/Nash and plus Richie to me.
Bruce and Dewey are gone. And Stephen's lost much of his voice and now Joe Vitale and Neil sing a lot of his harmony parts. So it doesn't sound anything like the Springfield.
But you get the 3 front men. The 3 song writers covering the old Springfield tunes.
My hope is that, with the Horse out to pasture, Neil somehow finds passion with these guys. I hope it's not "Buffalo Supergroup". I hope it's electric at least.
I'll take Richie Furay anyday! Not much we can do about Dewey and Bruce being gone. (RIP)
Voice or no voice, Stills puts in a stellar performance and I'm glad he's alive, too!

Like CSN(Y), Buffalo Springfield are a nostalgia act and apart from Neil Young none of them have done anything new or exciting in the last 30 years. Unless some of the proceedings go to charity, Buffalo Springfield (although I wouldn't call them that way, considering the line-up) just isn't worth 250 dollars. After all, they'll probably just be re-hashing all of their old stuff. If they would sing some Le Noise stuff, similar to the treatment of the LWW material during the 2006 Freedom of Speech Tour, that would be cool, but otherwise, they should just perform as a threesome.

Buffalo Springfield will be THE tour of the summer. I can't understand how it can be raining on this parade. I guess if Paul and Ringo were touring with Julian and Dhani some wouldn't be satisfied either. Not to pour on anybody, but folks, this fricking thing has been 40+ years in the making. If Neil didn't wanna do it it wouldn't happen. It ain't no sell-out. It's a happening. Go strong or get along 'lil doggie.
I saw both nights at the Bridge and the Springfield were great and Neil was obviously having a great time. I assume these shows will also have a rockin' electric set, adding a whole new element.
And longer set lists, which could only be a good thing. So many songs that haven't been played forever. Leave. Flying on the Ground is Wrong. Down to the Wire. Pretty Girl Why. Expecting to Fly. Uno Mundo. Hung Upside Down. Broken Arrow. Special Care. My Kind of Love. Out of My Mind.
It may be an oldies act, but unlike CSNY (or some of Neil's show for that matter) it can be heavy with songs that are far from overexposed. And leave it to Neil to throw in some new stuff as well.
I probably can't make these shows, but I will try. At Bridge they were better than I expected. with a chance to rock out and stretch out they could be on a whole nother level.
I'm surprising myself. I'd never have guessed that I'd feel this way. But I do. Particularly after having attended SXSW Music and seen MANY bands playing with talent and passion just recently.
I haven't seen Neil since his last tour with the Horse in '03. That was passion. I honestly don't know how anyone can interpret Stephen's performance of Bluebird at the Bridge as passionate. But one guy's passion is another guy's anxiety .....so I'll leave it as that.
I'm not saying this won't be a landmark tour and it won't get rave reviews. I'm probably going to be the odd man out here. I'll probably listen to a few shows and decide whether they are really rocking or not before deciding to buy a ticket myself.

Whats holding you back at least from seeing the TR tour? There's some $50 tickets, man don't miss that one ... Le Noise is epic! Probably the best thing he's come out with in 20 years (and stands up to anything in his canon) and he's come out with loads of great music in that time.
With Springfield, lets not let ourselves be cynical ... Neil's not booking a 130 show tour, its 4 shows, coming on the back of the Bridge School Shows, this is history in the making, its Neil going way back to his roots ... its Neil reuniting, reconnecting, this is GREAT NEWS! he's mixing it up, having fun, trying out something new ... clearly this has been on his mind for years and he's wanted to find a way to make it work and how fabulous that its all come together ... I can't think of many (or any) bands from the 60s 100% intact but this is as good as one can expect ... and for those of us waiting for him to bring The Horse out from pasture this shows you can never say never with Neil ... hope they come for a show or two in New York ...
I will admit though that having seen Neil as the lead guy for decades its kinda strange to see him take a presence of equals in BS.

25% of the Beatles sells out shows worldwide. McCartney. I'm just saying that the fickle mind of some fans seems to never be satsified. Ya can't bring folks back. The 2010/11 and beyond Springfield is the best ya can get now. Neil can play with the Uptown High School Band for all I care. I'd be interested in it.It's new art whatever form it takes.

Wow $250 for great seats - unreal. Why not just go ahead and charge $1,000 for the first ten rows or something, Elliot? It's so sad to thumb through ticket stubs either at home or in collection books like 'Long May You Run' and see the ticket prices. I'm NOT trying to ignite a debate on the value of seeing Neil live because there's no point - he is priceless. But there does come a a point where many people hit a financial wall to which they cannot scale and that sucks. Here's an idea - play on a big green lawn full of girls and boys in the afternoon sun somewhere and charge what it was in 1967 or so.
@Dan. I was out of town when Neil swung through on the Twisted Road. There weren't a lot of options where I live this time around....I've heard a lot of the shows on torrent, though...sounds like a great show, but I think Neil is a little loose for the solo electric thing, though...but it sounds really fun.
Don't confuse my observations and conclusions with cynicism. I pay close attention to what Neil / CSNY / CSN /CN are doing. From what I've heard, the new CN tour sounds excellent. They are always pushing with their writing...and they still sing and play great in the CN configuration.
Does anyone know if the presale site for the LA shows had less expensive seats when they went on sale yesterday? The SB and SF shows have the less expensive now but LA has only the $250.

@ SONY--it's true that some fans are never satisfied...and I was super-sceptical about a Springfield reunion w/o Dewey or Bruce...but they kicked butt at the Bridge Concerts IMO...Still, McCartney is McCartney, he is NOT the Beatles, and doesn't claim to be...and Paul and Ringo together aren't the Beatles either, but that would be an inneresting show...
Thumbing through old ticket stubs and looking at the prices doesnt exactly hold true...There are lots and lots of bands out there today that you can go see very inexpensively...Fast forward 30, 40 years and see what the few that have stood the test of time are charging...just my 2 cents...(all I got left from this round of Neil tickets :)
@TomCrac - I know you're right and all ticket prices have gone up to ridiculous levels for any and all "major" successful acts. The market is what it is I guess.
However, I've been passing on quite a few shows these past three or four years because of $ alone and that sucks.

Don't be so hard on yourself, Doonerak, I have mixed feelings myself concerning the hype sorrounding the so-called reunion tour. Hindsight being what it is, it would have been nice had they (Neil) put their egos aside and got together when there was still a Buffalo Springfield. Never the less, considering neither Bruce nor Dewey wrote or sang,their presence will still be missed. If Richie was added to the line up of CSNY, they could easily had performed marathon 4-hr sets. I will try to attend, but I just don't see it as a Buffalo Springfield show. I would love to see Paul and Ringo perform together even with Julian and Dhani, however, they would never even think of calling themselves the 'Beatles', would they? As far as Still's voice is concerned, it is what it is, but it certainly isn't what it was. Have you heard Dylan lately?
No doubt, ticket prices are steep. I have passed on a number of shows and events just because of the tick. price too. I will not go to a number of events knowing that Neil or Bowie, or maybe the Who are comming to town.
I hope the set list is a little varried from the last time. I listen to the show I attended and really enjoy it. Then I've listened to the studio version and am not impressed...I haven't even bought it...don't think I will. I am hoping that this leg sounds much like the first leg and not so much like the album. Lenoise's treatment is lost on me :( Hope that Neil is in good spirits and offers up a bit more on the encores.
I do seriously doubt any Paul/Ringo+ collaborations would ever be billed as the Beatles. That lineup would spin the turnstiles and probably be the closest in sound that could happen. Probably never will. Almost sacreligious saying it. And it's certainly a fact that even this edition of the Buffalo will not be what was, but it's still a far cry from not having it happen. I hope Stills can hang in there vocally. I'll go if they come 'round. I did stop going to see Dylan, though still tempted. It's not so much the voice but the last few times he's been around he hasn't picked up a guitar. Not that interested in Bob the keyboard player, so, I just keep finding live 'imports' of old performances. We're all fighting that age old battle..with age.
There reunion gigs are a mixed bag of tricks. For us unable to have seen the Buffalo in the day sounds tantalizing. Yet that was 45 years ago and they were real hungry then. Have been able to see CSNY over time but the last trip was clearly Neil's tour, the others had nothing new or stellar to offer. Last interview heard with Stills, his voice was so garbled at times wondered if he could finish. I know it's castles burning but trying to relive is not my thing.
I don't think this tour is about "re-living" the past.
It's about being better at what you're doing now than when you did it when you were younger.
It's like vintage clothing. Some people wear it because they like the style or because it's comfortable or because clothes weren't made to dispose of after a few uses.
They don't wear it because they're trying to re-live the past.
The Buffalo Springfield actually sound better this time around than they did when they were starting out. The songs sound better. Clearer.

I'm 100% sure it's not Neils ego that has stopped him from reuniting BS. If it would have been worthwile in his eyes, he sure as hell would have done this while Bruce Palmer was still alive - he praised Bruce once as being the heart of the band or something like that.
Neil only does these things if there's a good reason to let it become reality. To let it 'matter'.
With the CSNY tour of course the reason was that the whole LWW concept would get much bigger attention. He consciously chose to let CSNY be the messengers. That way he was sure he would not only get more exposure (in the media) but also that he would get the Vietnam generation attending these shows. People his age.
So… if Neil feels this time around the BS concept will blossom, I expect there must be a creative reason, so my guess is they will:
- have some new songs to play together.
- indeed dust of songs that have rarely been played live.
- beat the hell out of their guitars (Neil and Stephen).

Wow! Gillian Welch is opening for them? Now $250 doesn't seem like a bad deal anymore. I have only had the chance to see her and Dave Rawlings, with whom she always performs, live, last year, as Dave Rawlings Machine, they don't visit Europe that much, and if I'm quite honest, I liked that concert better than the two times I saw Neil (in February 2008 and June 2009). The albums Revival, Hell Among Yearlings, Revelator, Soul Journey and Friend of a Friend are easily among the best made in the last 15 years.
There just is something about her voice, their harmony and their songs that just moves me big time, in a similar way Neil's voice and songs do. Also, their ability to transform any song into a song that sounds like their own is just amazing. Just listen to covers of Dylan's Queen Jane Approximately, Townes' Pancho & Lefty, The Band's The Weight or Radiohead's Black Star. Or one of Neil's songs they covered: Albuquerque, Country Girl, Pocahontas or Cortez the Killer.
I cannot express just how much I love her music, she is my favorite female singer of all time and I really hope this will yield her the attention she so much deserves. Concert goers: you will have a blast, so don't miss it, you will regret it.
Now I AM hoping they will also visit Europe (and I will have a full time job by then), 'cause Gillian Welch and Buffalo Springfield (despite my previous comments) is a must see show.

What exactly do you mean by that?
Sparks fly when Neil and Steve play guitars together. It's like a double helix the way they weave their melody. (Did you see Furay and Rosas rock'n it out together on rhythm?)
Steve and Neils play off each other as good as Betts did with Duane. Clapton and Duane. BB King & Clapton.
The feed off each other -- it's where passion meets the soul -- it's deep down, man.
Steve is one of the most passionate guitar players (and songwriters) of all time.
He just can't be "passionate" all the time, dig? He has to come up for air, you know what I mean?
The kind of passion Steve has destroys people.
Don't begrudge a person like Stephen Stills for choosing life over death.
Have you ever seen the "Last Waltz" with Stills, Robertson, and Neil bringing the curtain down?
It's at the very end. Steve jumps up on the stage not because he wants the spotlight -- to be in movie -- he wants to play because he loves playing his guitar.
That's all these guys ever wanted to do all their lives, ya know?

Ah, the Stills passion. Well, Stills IS actually long known as being a showboat aiming to steal the lime lite. Particularly was during the 70s. Back when CSN did solo performances during their sets, once Stills extended his set by 5 songs when he realized Bob Dylan was in the house. As for passion which can kill, for Stephen, it was always his anxiety which almost killed him and drove him to drink hugely at the start of each tour. A tormented artist? For sure.....Kudos to him for cleaning up and getting healthy, though....at last.

I was on the Ticketmaster site the exact moment tix for the 2 Wiltern Shows went on sale at 10 am this morning. I mean I was there and on top of it! All the $89 seats were already gone seconds after going on sale - if there were ever any to sell to begin with. Same with the $150 seats - also gone. All that was left were single $250 seats on the floor and, at $552 for two out the door with all the Ticketbastard surcharges, who can afford that! So, I was able to score 1 $150 ticket ($171.00 OTD) for Sunday's show becase all the $89 ($105 OTD) were also gone! While I had hoped to bring my girlfriend to the gig to see The Springfield, I'll be going alone - which I don't mind, but it would have been cool to have been able to score 2x$89 seats for the both of us. I know this is a big gig, but selling out in seconds? Where did all the cheap seats go? WTF?
There have been som rumors about a new album in the Performance Series. The album, A Treasure, is said to be from concerts in 1984/1985 with the International Harvesters and be out in June 10th 2011. There should also be a mentioning of this on Rust Community that was deleted. Does anybody know more about this? (This is not a joke, April fools day btw)

Mother Nature - I seriously do not know that you mean here. Big Bad Wolf? Have I mentioned something that not to be mentioned for one reason or another??? I am not a freqvent visitor ogf The Rust Community, but I like to go to Thrasher now and then to see if something is going on on.
But I understand that the YouTube-link is no longer available -I have not seen it at all - so I guess that 'A Treasure' might not be released or it should not yet be official that it will be released. Not a big deal. There will always be more to come and more not to come. I am still waiting for The Trunk Show on DVD.
@ Mother Nature...Stills has been one of my idols, but it is possible that (as a writer at least) his best days are behind him...SHAKEY paints a picture of him being a nervous wreck before going onstage, and (compared to Ritchie)he did look uncomfortable at the Bridge shows and again THAT'S UNDERSTANDABLE...I don't wanna write him off, and I'm NOT writing him off...I just hope, if there's a full Tour, that he's up to it...

The interviews from Nashville Now & the Farm Aid concerts from that era (International Harvesters) were on Youtube and torrents for a long, long time.
The interview from Nashville Now (in 4 parts -- Neils is reborn as a country boy!) right after Neil's daughter was born has been on Youtube forever! I think Neil was even chewing on some hay. I think that's when they invested in the chickens.

I didn't like the way they produced a lot of Neil's songs for the Buffalo Springfield back then. Hearing them played now is a real treat!
To hear Furay sing "Do I have To Come Right Out and Say it" this time around is pure joy!
He slowed down the tempo and is singing it in a deep whisper like voice -- the way it should have been sung. The early version is like playing a 78 on the 45 speed.
Neil, Richie and Stephen have nothing to gain from playing together excepting the joy of playing as Buffalo Springfield. Neil is fabulously wealthy, Stephen, has plenty and can make bucks as CSN......Richie has his family & congregation. Give them the credit they deserve for remembering the joy they brought their audience so many years ago and doing their best to show today's audience how good they were! I was lucky enough to see them all in 66 & 67........I also saw them in Oct. at "The Bridge"...quit flapping your mouths..GET TICKETS! They will not disappoint you!!!!!!!!!
I was at the first night of the Bridge concert and saw the Springfield for the first time. I am 58, and after Billy Idol rocked the joint and warmed me up, I have to say the Springfield was awesome! I sung every song with them and went home and sung the same songs for two weeks to myself!
I got a back row ticket for Oakland....all I could afford because they were up to $170 bucks within a day or two from scalpers sucking them up an reselling them....but I am looking forward to an extended playlist and a lot of fun. I have a couple of fatties rolled and my ears ready for a great concert!
Any advance word on whether they'll be plugging in and going ELECTRIC this time around? The Bridge/acoustic show was a treat, but we need to see Neil and Stephen dueling it out LOUD (and Richie bopping around with his electric 12-string).

Ok, just saw Buffalo Springfield Sunday night, June 5, at the Wiltern in LA. Best seats in the house...front row, center. Cost a wad of dough, but totally worth it!
In short...THEY WERE FANTASTIC!!! I am such a huge fan of Stephen Stills and was so worried his voice would be shot, as I've heard him in the past and it sounded so weak. But I'm hear to tell you, HE'S BACK! His voice sounded wonderful and of course, his guitar playing is beyond legendary!
These guys rocked the house! They were awesome and clearly having fun. Stephen was in pain, his right arm was hurting and he had a chiropractor on-site, but he still gave a great performance.
The biggest surprise to me was how great Richie Furay sounded and how full of energy Neil was! I can't believe these guys are not still in their 20s the way they rock and roll around the stage! It was an amazing, amazing show!
I flew out from Texas for it, and it was probably the best concert I've attended! Of course, having such great seats at such a great venue helped, but I'm here to tell you, don't rag on Mr. Stills--whatever issue he had with his voice and his weight appear to be resolved. He looked great and sounded better.
And Neil...wow. The man is not fully human. Nobody can play that well, sing that well and rock out like that at his age w/o being other-worldly. Truly a terrific show!
Just saw their 1st show in Santa Barbara June 7 and wish I had tickets for there second show as well. By far, one of the best shows I have ever seen.
There first number started off a little rough when Neil stopped the song and said they wanted to do it over again for their own joy... They never missed the rest of the night. They had a lot of fun on stage together and we were all fortunate enough to be able to watch.
We caught the show Sunday here in L.A. and it was nothing short of sensational. It was obvious from the start the guys were "on" and having the times of their lives.
I was a bit too young to catch BS the first time around but have seen Stephen, Neil and Richie each several times in or with various bands (living in L.A. does have some rewards) and in my opinion all three performed with more joy and passion than I had ever previously witnessed.
They were like young men again, excited and energized and giving it their all...so much so it seemed they had to restrain themselves from high-fiving or hugging each other after each number. Hell, Stephen nearly tripped over a speaker in his excitement following one of his songs.
The entire performance was genuine and passionate and an absolute joy for everyone in the house: from the performers to the audience and even to the Wiltern employees and security who were rocking the sidelines.
I've been to hundreds of concerts in my live, but a medical condition threatens to soon end those pleasures at my current 57 years. I have tickets for a couple of bands I hope to see later this year, but I couldn't help but think during the show that should this BS show be the last show ever for me, then I am going out in style having been fortunate enough to witness a very, very special performance.

As an American,I can think of no better place in north America to see BSF than Banff,Canada in August. Make it happen Niel.
Wow, we saw them the first nite in Santa Barbara...they were great! The harmonys were awesome and the SB Bowl made the experience even better even with seats almost to the top of the center. A lot of times you get better acoustics when you are in that kind of spot.
The covered pretty much all the BS hits (not the other meaning for BS!) and the closing song was as Neil said "the song that would be the begining of a new Buffalo Springfield if it were to happen" (don't think it will though based on history).
The closer was "Rockin in the Free World"....they played it for like 10 or 15 mins at least...with about 20 or 25 audience chourses..usually I don't go for "hey sing with us" but this was different.
I've been letting my "freak flag" fly...letting hair grow and I have never been to a concert in the last 20 years with so many "old hippie" types. Lots of long male hair and ladies with grey hair (but the dyed ones are o.k. too....
an experience I hope flashes before my eyes as I pass from this mortal coil (in a long time still I hope!)
Naysayers, you just didn't really know the 60's probably. The man was down on all young people and long hairs all the time; the cops were usually o.k. but sometimes...not.
Any way, for a positive finale for this blog...I can only say, "KEEP ON ROCKIN' IN THE FREE WORLD". YES!
