The Story Behind The Photo | Jay Blakesberg Photography
A nice photo gallery by renowned photographer Jay Blakesberg of Neil Young at the Bridge School Concert on October 30, 2005.
Jay tells the story behind the photo:
This was shot for a feature in Esquire Magazine.
Earlier that year Neil was given Hank Williams old guitar and case (The one in the photo). Trying to wrangle Neil for a photo shoot is not an easy task! I was promised 5 minutes. I had a small window where the available light was perfect in front of Neils car and tour bus. I discussed it with neil for a minute and he said, right after he gets off stage with Los Lobos we will do it.
Neils guitar tech - Larry Cragg showed me where the guitar case was locked inside the equipment truck. He told me to go in right when it was time and grab the guitar as I wanted that old Hank case in the shot. I had my 11 year old son with me and sent him in there to grab the guitar and bring it out. Neil was standing there with me, and saw Sam carrying the case and said "ok, I think I can handle that from here" and took the case to walk over and do the shoot.
Classic moment having your son hand Neil Hanks guitar...

This old guitar ain't mine to keep
It's mine to play for a while
Good timing T on this post, that song was ringing in my head all day yesterday after watching Heart of Gold recently.. Reminded me of the comment a while back where the guy and his boy were watching Neil and the kid yells out 'He's got Hank' (or something similar)
"Earlier that year Neil was given Hank Williams old guitar and case (The one in the photo)"
Didn't Neil write Old Man and Heart Of Gold on the old Hank Williams guitar? I think he had the guitar way longer that just a year!
In a March 1992 interview, Neil reported having bought Hank Williams' Martin D-28 Guitar from Tut Taylor, in Nashville, in 1978...anyway, it seems he has begun to use it live since 1992...
That picture is fucking great. Yes the profanity is appropriate here...
"ok, I think I can handle that from here"
In other words, "Gimme that, you little sh*t!"
Love him or hate him, another Neil associate is no longer with us ...
I for one continue to believe the chicken give away w/ Neil in the Gulf was a class act. People are complex but a charitable act is a charitable act and deserves to be praised...
Don Tyson, who helped build his namesake family business from an Arkansas chicken hatchery into the country’s largest meat processor, died earlier today following a brief illness, the company said. He was 80.
“An era has passed,” John Tyson, Don’s son and the chairman of Tyson Foods Inc., said in a statement today. Don Tyson “was a true visionary who led Tyson Foods from a small regional chicken company to a multi-billion dollar food processing enterprise,” John Tyson said. “He will be missed by everyone who knew him.”
Born April 21, 1930 in Olathe, Kan., Don Tyson and his family moved to Springdale, Ark., the following year to expand a business hauling produce to Kansas City, St. Louis and Chicago. The family soon expanded into poultry, supplying feed and baby chicks to local farmers, then built its first chicken processing plant in 1958.
Don Tyson was named chief executive officer in 1967 after the death of his parents in an automobile accident. By the end of the 1980s, following a series of acquisitions, Tyson Foods was the largest U.S. poultry producer. In 2001, the company expanded into beef and pork processing, paying $3.2 billion for IBP, Inc.
Tyson Foods now controls about 21 percent of U.S. cattle slaughter capacity and 18 percent of hog capacity, according to industry estimates.
In other words...
Neil would never have that attitude towards a kid. never.
ok, I think I can handle that from here..has no attitude at all
I agree that Neil was not dissing the boy. That's not his style.
Great photo and story.
Cheers, Jim
Try to Remember Peace
PS I tried to post a comment from my iPhone on the formatted for iPhone page but it would not open the post-a-comment dialog page ...
Wow, lighten up people. It was a joke. I did not mean to imply that the mighty Neil Young would ever have a crass thought. Ever.
@Jim - re; commenting on iPhone....
Yes, it seems a bit quirky.
You need to click on the Post A Comment link, which is above the Policy Statement and below all of the comments.
Maybe not the best or most obvious solution. Good one for the TW Platform suggestion box!
@vertigone - we're cool. hey even neil might get crass once in awhile like we never have ... ;)
I second the lighten up motion...I get nervous when my kids get near or touch my Taylor guitar...and it didn't belong to Hank Williams... obviously...
