Visual Premiere of Le Noise on YouTube on Thurs.

A very, very cool new video announcing Neil Young's new album, Le Noise which will have a visual premiere this coming Thursday on YouTube.

Here is Neil personally delivering the goods to the YouTube master, Roosevelt, in his long range electro-cruiser, Lincvolt.

From the YouTube post:"This Shakey PIctures production celebrates the freedom of self expression that YouTube encourages for those who create their own original artistic content."

You`re right there Matt, and don`t we just love him for it!

I`ve listened to THE ACTUAL CD several times now over the last couple of days and have some initial impressions which I`ll probably be posting soon....

I don`t know whether I`m posting this in the appropriate place, but here are a few of my thoughts on `Le Noise` so far, FWIW………

1) The first thing that really hits me overall is Neil`s voice - it`s as clear and strong and pure as it`s ever been IMO and in fact I think it`s improving with age. And I think he understands better how to use it to best effect. The sound quality of the CD is excellent - you could almost imagine Neil is in the same room, especially on the 2 acoustic songs.

2) The whole album and the running order works well and has a good flow to it. It does not disappoint!

3) The sonics. I have to say that I think Lanois has done an excellent job and has enhanced what is already there, although I was quite relieved at his gentle and subtle treatment of PVB. That `whispery` echo he `s put on Neil`s voice and especially the slightly delayed echo after the lyrics `God`s creations` is a stroke of genius in itself. This song alone is worth the price of the album IMO.

4) The songs, as has already been established, are brilliant, and I have to say that `Someone`s Going to Rescue You` is really growing on me. I love the lyrics and Neil`s guitar riffs in this one and the way he sings the high-pitched `ah…ah` bits like he does on `I Believe in You`. I`m so pleased Neil`s updated and released `The Hitchhiker`, but the problem for me is that I love the acoustic version that`s on yt so much, with Neil`s hauntingly beautiful harmonica playing which gives the song such a melancholic quality. But of course he`s singing it from an older and different perspective now.

5) I love the fact that Neil is still so open to exploring new creative possibilities, he is just so incredible. He is still a force to be reckoned with, musically and otherwise. I have to admit though that I wasn`t sure how much I`d actually be listening to this album and thought maybe it would be a little over-dominated by Lanois` sonics but I wouldn`t say that`s the case at all now. I`ve already realized that I`ll be listening to it for a long time to come. Every play shows up something I hadn`t noticed before. Overall I would say that this is a collaboration that has been very successful for Neil and for Lanois and they both deserve so much credit for it.

Well, that`s enough of my ramblings…..

Can't wait to see the complete film. My one complaint about the new record is that I wish they'd included it with the CD, as they've done with other releases. The videos are gorgeous and I'd love to have them in a format I can own.

Was listening to Le Noise last night with headphones, and was struck at how during "Love And War" Neil sounded like he was actually in the room, as if he were sitting and singing right in front of me. I can't remember ever having that feeling with anything else I've listened to that way. Kudos to Neil and Dan for creating a sonic masterpiece.

Excellent review, Jill.

On point #2 regarding PVB - YES! What Lanois does with "God's creations" is CHILLING. Note how the echoed voice is actually pitched different melodically so that it descends from where Neil initially sings it, further emphasizing the haunting, ghostly vibe. Absolute genius. Also, the whispered echoes are definitely beautiful, and I'm also happy for his light, though still apparent and powerful, touch.

Also, on Neil's vocal - yeah, I agree he is using it to great effect. I get the feeling that Lanois has beefed it up considerably. It sounds stronger than usual I think.

I also just started spinning the actual CD, and the difference between the CD and the NPR stream are night and day. Major difference.

I haven't heard the acoustic version of Hitchhiker. I'm going to have to check it out.

Let the Le Noise begin. CD arrived in mail today. I must agree with Jill on all her points. Having to listen now on computer speakers, but not bad quality. Will have surround sound system fixed tomorrow and looking forward to cranking it up and reliving our TR experience at the Ryman this summer. GTG now, Love and War is about to start.

Video looks great! Haven't had the time to see the individual videos yet, but this completes the art project that Le Noise is! I especially like the video to Angry World, made me appreciate the songs that much more. This is truly a unique album, and watching that interview with Lanois and Neil on Q TV, during which they discussed Lanois' accident earlier this year made me realise how close we were to not getting this album at all, which apart from losing a talented musician/producer like Lanois, would be a real pity! Bring on the Blu-Ray!

James: very funny..."Sedan delivery is a job I'll keep, it sure was hard to find".

I only wish Neil had handed off a picture disc or something weird.

I agree totally with Jill's points - I've been saying for a long time that PVB was the strongest song on this album (and there are other very strong songs, L&W, Angry World...) and Lanois has helped make it even stronger. A classic...

So, will there be a DVD release of this video classic? I'm not savvy enough yet to hook up my Sony Blu-Ray to the "internets"..

Yes, Matt, that drop down really adds to the unearthly echo effect! In fact the whole album is full of shining gems. I`m sure you`re right about Lanois having `beefed up` Neil`s voice quite a lot. There are times, of course, that we can hear Neil no longer has a young man`s voice, especially when he`s singing more quietly on the acoustic songs, although I think his voice has become even more beautiful and expressive over time. I love the fact that he still lets that sensitivity and vulnerability show in his singing and his music. And I forgot to mention his very masterly and beautiful acoustic guitar playing on both L and W and PVB.

Looking forward to watching the whole of the video later - while I was downloading it (to RealPlayer) I saw splashes of colour in there too!

Melanie, I loved your concert review - you have a beautiful and heartfelt way of writing and I look forward to reading more from you!

And Jim, hippie dream, yes there will be a CD/DVD version coming out at some point.
