Rick James and Neil Young: "It's My Time" on YouTube
RICK JAMES - NEIL YOUNG - THE MYNAH BIRDS - "IT'S MY TIME" - Motown, 1966
This is the elusive single that Neil Young & Rick James wrote together while bandmates in The Mynah Birds back in 1966. Motown never released it because Rick was arrested for AWOL, they actually pulled it the day it was scheduled to air, then all these years later it finally sees the light of day! This would've been a definite hit had they released it back then. The other songs on the album sound similar and some are just instrumental. This does not sound like the Rick James we all know, he was into imitating The Rolling Stones Back Then, and he does a good job! So I refer to him as Rick Jagger! Neil's style of course has changed as well, but wow, they sure did come a long way... The Mynah Birds; 'It's My Time'"
Thanks Josh!

I love it! It's always been a mystery to me, trying to reconcile the organic sound that we expect from Neil with the highly-produced vibe of Motown R&B/soul. But this song combines the two feels very nicely.
Hey, if Rick hadn't been arrested and sent back to the US, who knows what direction Neil would have gone?
wow, THAT would´ve been something on the archives!
cheers,

Just more falling in line with a spoof I posted in Spoof http://www.thespoof.com/news/spoof.cfm?headline=s4i59016
Neil Young: Uncut, Unplugged, Unending
All in Fun! Loves me my Neil!

It sounds like a Gerry and Pacemakers tune, too.
Neil would have gone in the same direction. He never wanted to be a studio monkey. He had strong convictions about that and would have never settled for mediocrity. (Or people telling him what to write or sing or what to wear...)
The other song, "I've Got You In My Heart" is the song that would have been a hit. He's got soul, awright.
Thrasher..correction/question...I thought this single WAS officially released by Motown a few years agon on a compilation of single from Motown that had not been officially released...so it is correct to say was ONLY released a few years ago by Motown and not "never" released by Motown???
thanks..jeffry
Thanks Jeffry.

You are correct, sir.
This song is available on the excellent ACE CD "You heard them here first" Rock's Icons Before They were Famous.
I'm listening right now "It's My Time" (Mix 1) that is an instrumental version on the song and i realize that sound exactly the same as The Cure's "Boys Don't Cry"
Am I Crazy or is simple thats wonderful coincidences of life?
cheers
Roy
Roy is not crazy, I had exact same thought re: "Boys Don't Cry." Mad props to WFMU where I first hear this cut.
