Archives Open Thread: Saturday, 5/30/09
As we mentioned earlier, we'll start having a daily open thread on the Neil Young Archives where you can post thoughts and questions.
We're not sure what Archives Guy's plans are but he may check in from time to time. But if you know the answer to folks' questions, try and help out.
As we've noted, a Archives FAQ is in the works. In the meantime -- as always -- see Everything You've Ever Wanted To Know About The Neil Young Archives But Were Afraid To Ask.
Public service announcement follows:
And if you like what we're doing here, here's how to help support Thrasher's Wheat. Thanks!

Well then, how bout a game one prediction.
I say Pens 4-2.
And a question to boot: Is there a slot in the box set that I can slide my Canterbury House CD/DVD into?

Q for Archives Guy...what was the reasoning behind editing out the start (the For What It's Worth intro) from the Hollywood Palace Mr. Soul performance on the disc with the Springfield material?
hello
and thanks for all the help.
this is all very nail-bitingly exciting
but last night there was
a rumored further set-back
(6/30).
any truth to this
or can we rest easy in our beds?
thanks again

Hi Archives Guy,
I'm patiently awaiting on Amazon UK shipping my order out for the Blu Ray set. I'm curious to know why the decision was made to not include the full albums from the period the set covers?
JC
The Archives have arrived in Germany and they're unbelievably fantastic! I got so excited I had to film me unpacking them. If you wanna have a look: (SPOILER WARNING !!)

Thanks Archives Guy for making such a great thing possible !

Open slot question.
All will be revealed when your set arrives.
I hope you are right about the game.
Hollywood Palace clip-
The focus is on the Neil Young song, "Mr Soul".

Where's the Fork in the Road vinyl?

Not an Archives question,, but the answer is:

My local Independent Record Store broke the street date and had this on sale on Thu. (hope you don't mind). Got both the CD and BD and have to get a BD player now. Love what I've heard so far. How much space will I need for 2.0 updates. Most players have 1GB but the PS3 has 80GB OR 160GB. Seems like a huge difference. What say you?
I'm just putting in a second vote for the "when will the MP3s be availible to download" question. I really want to rock some of these tracks in my car. I got my Blu-Ray set yesterday and I think it's amazing. My Father, who thought that the "whole thing was a bit much", couldn't stop grinning when he actually saw the set in action. He was really into it. He sat down and checked it all out with me.
Syscrusher-
AG is much better at keeping secrets than I am. Not that it's a secret, anyway....on rust, someone from Australia reported that there is in fact some "extra room" in the box. I kinda get the feeling that this is expected to be a spoiler free zone...so I shan't say more other than "read the rust list" or the "Steve Hoffman Forums".
:-)
Got my bluray copy yesterday. Have been listening to it in order and have loved every second until i got to Topanga 3, and there was no disc! Very frustrating. AG should i take it back to the store I got it at or call the manufacturer?
My set was shipped in the US yesterday. In the meanwhile I'll need to live with the Preview disc. A potentially silly question: How do you navigate back out of the video with the reels turning while the song is playing, on a PS3? I'd like to go back to where I can browse the photos etc., but can't seem to do it without stopping the song (this is the blu-ray preview).
To say this looks to be a mindblowingly fantastic set is an understatement.
Derek-

Navigating out of Play All mode/Turntables:
You need to learn about the Pop Menu.
On PS3 push the RED SQUARE and you will see a Pop Up Menu that allows to navigate freely.
ON other remotes look for button named POP UP MENU
-Archives Guy
Awesome. Thank you very much for your help AG. Otherwise very happy with the rest of it. Totally worth the price. Thanks again.
MP3 Question
I'm waiting on them myself...to test before they go live.
-Archives Guy
AG, thanks so much for ALL your information.. you've been FANTASTIC...
Today on my preview disc I saw two YELLOW pushpins around the Springfield era.. It said to download but then said to try back later.. is there an update today but not working ?
Also, is the intention ever to have the hidden tracks play if you select the "play all" mode, even if not for this version, perhaps for Archives 2 ?
Finally, the set is TRULY amazing.. thanks to all involved... Blue Ray the way to go !
Software Player update:
Our tech team has told me that some improvements have been made to the BD software player PowerDVD, making it more compatible with the Archives set.
Below you will read the news and see a link for upgrading to PowerDVD v9.
Personally, I still feel that these PC software players are in early development and it takes a tech savvy user to understand how to configure their PC for optimal and successful Blu-ray use.
We have received some information from CyberLink about 192kHz audio support. It's dependent on the DAC chip used in the PC:
"We downsize the sample rate to 48K in PowerDVD v8. However, in PowerDVD v9, if the platform has audio chip Realtek ALC885, or ALC889, we would output the 192KHz audio."

Yellow Pins question:
That behavior seems to be left over from a server problem that we had yesterday.
There are some extra pins showing up that lead to nothing. There aren't any new downloads.
I'll check that out. Thanks for the heads up.
Life on the cutting edge of technology.....
AG:
I recall you talking about how BD-Live additions won't have HD video, will they be 24/192 audio quality?
Thanks,
Kimball
The BD-LIve audio will be DTS-HD Master Audio 24/192.
File size would be to large and slow to deliver otherwise and we like DTS-HD Master Audio for this type of use.
-Archives Guy
AG,
I didn't order the entire set, just a few of the discs individually, however I recieved an e-mail saying due to unforseen circumstances I will not have them shipped until June 30th. Any idea on why this might be?
Thanks
DUUUDDDEE!, THAT SUCKS. Wouldnt want to be you right now! MY entire BLURAY set came and it ROCKS!
Hey AG,
I seem to be a having some issues with The BD downloads. I have downloaded and listen to I Wonder (and another which I wont name to spoil any surprise), but now when I go back to play I Wonder again it isnt there anymore (no blue pin) and I dont get a message giving me the option to download it again. It seems to have disappeared.
Also, the blue pins only show up when I am connected to the to the net (I thought once downloaded they were inserted into your timeline regardless of connection and saved onto the SD card in the player) and I can only listen to the 'other' download when the disc that I had in the player is in the player when I did the download. Eg - used disc 1 for the download, but if I have disc 3 in the player i can see the blue pin, but get an error message if I want to play the download. Plays fine with disc one in the machine.
Is the the way it is or is something not right? I am using a Panasonic BD35.
By the way, have been through the whole set once now and all I can say is WOW. I now know why the push for bluray was so strong. Anything else would only limit the experience...
Cheers - Dave from Australia
AG~
If you need a few other people to test those MP3s, I'd be more than willing to volunteer ;). But hopefully they'll be up and running once I get the DVD set on Tuesday. My plan is to read the book while the MP3s are downloading, then hit the DVDs once they're finished.
Also, after watching that video tomlong95 made, it looked like there's a hell of a lot of tapes in that tape database that you guys had tpo sift through. Which is a problem I'd be more than willing to have :p.
Hey Archives Guy/Any Tech Wizard,
I really hate to dilute the Archives Talk with another tech question, but I'd like to know if this setup will indeed give me high definition audio. I'm trying to use what I've got and refrain from buying a huge receiver/home theatre sound setup -- which, as sweet as it would be, I simply cannot afford after a HDTV, a PS3 and a $400 box set.
Anyway, I plan to put the Archives into the PS3. Then run the PS3 to my TV through HDMI. Then run the audio out through the TV's analog audio output into the AUX mode of my stereo system. No doubt this will give me at least decent sound -- but the burning question, is whether or not it will truly be high-definition, or 24/192 , which seems to be all the rage.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.
PS -- Archives Guy, too bad about those Pens.
Did you see that the dvds areexpensiver on Amazon.de than the Blue rays?
Funny.
About that Tomlong youtube video...The "Archives Selected Tracks" in the book remind me of a graphic up on Neil's Website when it launched in 2000. The yellow hilighted tracke are what was selected for the archives. You can see there are a lot of things in there either never recorded or lost or just not selected. Tantalizing! Anyway, it will be great to have the whole story in the book! And the only way forward is Blu-Ray with BD-Live to possibly flesh out the sonic story in the future!!!
Can't wait til we get some reports on further BD-Live music content! Can we have a spoiler zone somewhere?!?!?!I've given up on surprises. For me, reading the spoilers gives me just as good a surprise factor!!!
the DVD box contains the 10 DVDs + CD/DVD of the 68' Canterbury House Concert !!!
Any chance of Archives being released on vinyl? Please!!! I don't want to spend a bunch of money on the DVD set and then see it released on my preferred format a month or two later...so is there any way of knowing this?
A huge custom box, 10 discs, a book, a poster, 100+MP3 files for free and now a free bonus Canterbury CD/DVD???
When you add it all up, this set is actually a great value for what it is.
Thanks Neil!!!
Agree on the huge value here. While I acknowledge everyone is entitled to his / her opinion, I also am very impressed with what Neil is providing here..
1 - Optimal digital quality... he's the artist.. he values this.. Sadly, but to each his own, fewer people care about audio quality today.. so be it, if so, don't buy it...
2 - This is truly more than music.. it's a collection of an artist.. I'm a HUGE Neil fan, but even bigger Beatle fan.. if the Beatles were to do this, I'd be stoked... As I am with Neil's set
3 - Neil is offering individual disc purchases from his site... another option of showing flexibility for fans
4 - BD LIVE is AWESOME.. if we get a few extra tracks and extra video per year, and don't have to pay for it, WOW... and sweet.. like Christmas throughout the year...
5 - Those who say "I have this already".. well you have it, in many cases, through Bootlegs (which I own also)... I personally see little wrong with bootlegs of NON RELEASED material, but if the artist releases it finally, and fans say "he's not giving me anything because I have this already", well you have it illegally... Neil, the artist, is now offering it legally, in much higher quality.... again, maybe not new to your ears, but newly officially released
Again, not saying others cannot feel differently, but I think this set is amazing....
One final comment.. I've listened to the preview disc via Optical output (96) and RCA output (192)..
I personally, while loving audio quality, don't hear more clarity on the 192, but do hear more warmth, in the 192... I was expecting more clarity or more as if Neil was "in the room".. didn't get that, but could here the warmth and depth of the tracks in 192... different, but good !!!

This box is IT! Better than I could have imagined! A HUGE THANK YOU! To Neil FUCKN' YOUNG for being such a fantastic artist, songwriter, singer, guitarist, filmmaker, (dream) Car Maker, and pack rat (and many more titles)! Can anyone say Brilliant? Can anyone Integrity? What other artist does this for their fans? Most are happy with a mediocre set of CD's. Not Neil! Not only does he offer, most likely, the best box set, maybe ever, but also he develops an entirely new format for it. I think its time we admit that Neil knows what's best for his fans...and if you still don’t want to listen, (or simply cant afford)...well, he offers you other, cheaper formats. He’s listened to the fans….that alone proves that Neil Young is a few notches above the rest, not that there has ever been any doubt. People have complained about the cost of 'Archives' but I believe they are all eating their words now as this is the best value in music for the price, filled with some of the greatest Rock ever made! Not to mention state-of-the-Art! The 'Shakey Platform' changes the game totally and I'm sure we'll be seeing this medium much more in the future. The Archives rule...if you haven’t purchased this box set...do it now or you WILL regret it! If you have then you know..or will soon know.
Thank you Neil, the Archives team, and Warner/Reprise!
Archives Guy, Can we download the MP3's yet?
I have my preview disc and it is brilliant.
Unfortunately in the UK we have to wait until the 8th of June.
Archives guy do you know why this is?
Can someone confirm - I've ordered the B-Ray version.....does that mean the Canterbury comes in B-Ray format or the CD/DVD?
Thanks again for all Q&A!
Cheers,
WELD
Carson-
PS3->HDMI picture
PS3->analog audio
This is exactly what I'm doing and you will get full 24/192 this way. PIcture quality depends on what your TV/monitor resolution is.

MP3 release question-
Folks the official street dat for this set is June 2nd.
Be patient.
Jammincrowe-
Audio quality tests.
I love it when people take the time to listen and compare. Glad you could here some of the differences.
Try comparing CD to BD when you have a chance.
-Archives Guy
WELD-
Canterbury House.
Now that our free surpriser is out of the box (so to speak), this is the CD/DVD combo. The Canterbury disc was never produced in Blu-ray, but will be out in vinyl.

"Archives Guy said...

I could've sworn I saw the 200G pressing of this already out??
Anyway, as for the archives, I'm obviously checking my Amazon page and it still isn't even being prepared for shipment. Hearing someone people already opening their lovely packages is making me fucking nuts!!!!
Canterbury House vinyl-
Your right! It is out already on vinyl.
I lose tracks of these things sometime.
thanks.
NEW THREAD FOR SUNDAY
The ever on top it and gracious Thrasher has created a new thread for Sunday. Please take you questions over there.

well after about 20 hours of veiwing, listening and, searching ive finally got through the entire archives box set...only to get a text from my freinds dave and matt explaiming there is more for me to download already and ive missed at least 3 amazing vidoes.ohio..birds..and buffalo s, in the studio....This is a monumental and stagering acheivment by neil and his gang..the quality and the formating is way above anything i ever expected and thought id see or hear...there are of course a large majority of songs we have always heard ..but there are at least 40 -50 that are either only found on rare vinyl or havent been heard at all..i thought i owned all neil available as i collected the bootlegs for 30plus years..so its very awesome to have at least 25 songs ive never heard before...i guess the main attraction are all the hidden goodies that one must search for, mainly on the time line...the footage of the various harvest clips around the barn and with the london orchestra is incredible..the 1969?loner/cinammon girl cafe footage..the neil stealing his own bootleg film...oh the live springfeild audio is jaw dropping..the various 1970 csny video at the fillmore...dance dance dance w crazy horse..and the brilliant version w g.nash..finally seeing a perfect copy of journey through the past, and LOVING IT, this film is far better than i thought it would be..loads of awesome neil content..i love the early squires vocal recordings to..and the RAS..man the RAPS throughtout the riverboat disc are sensatioanl..it becames even more apparent that neil was never the shy, reserved lonesome hippy he is thought of..he was always a cocky, funny, strong willed talkative entrtainer...im learning evn more just how quick he moved..in 1964 he is with squires..two years later he is working with jack n on those brilliant springfeild songs..then a solo tour then a solo album..then crazy horse..ektin.woodstock/csny/dejavu..the horse tour..goldrush lp..solo tour etc etc..sometimes in the same month..its like he was just moving so fast .jumping from one project to another..he accomplished so much and so much variety in a few short years...this is the beauty of neil(and bob dylan)..now matter how much we read and listen to them i find our ideas and veiws of them continue to change and grow year by year...If i have a cripe to make about the archives id like some "decade album"style notes by neil himself..and there is lot of footage that id like to see..especially the mind boggling dutch tv special..the bbc show..and the entire csny fillmore video...neil and joel shoul also check out the grateful dead,s complete fillmore and winterlong box sets with the veiw of releasing the entire canterbury house..cellar door andriverboat recordings as individual boxsets..oh where is the phenomanel busking scene??maybe that will come..these are just small things..ultimetly as someone who owns around 10000 records ranging from 1920 feild recordings right thru to sun ra vinyl ..and everything by neil bob beatles etc etc all the boxsets all the brilliant bootleg stuff etc etc..this is the most exciting and brilliantly assembled archival release of all time..this BLU RAY format is sensational...(now someone please find some danny whitten footage..that is the holy grail for me..danny,s guitar on ektin is my favorite ever lp of guitar playing..and for the record the rythm section on the electric side of 4 way street is my favorite ever rythm playing after billy and ralph)go forth fellow men and indulge yourself in the most incredible box set youve ever experienced
I can't believe I just watched that entire youtube video. Rivetted. Even pausing it and trying to read the blurry words in the book. I am truly an obsessed geek, and may require medication.
