Thanks Again Archives Guy!
Many thanks again to the Archives Guy for patiently answering literally hundreds of questions over the past few days!
Your patience and knowledge has been invaluable as so many Neil Young fans anxiously await the release of The Archives next week.
Folks have emailed us saying they're contemplating making significant investments in the packages and associated hardware and have found the info helpful and reassuring.
For many, this is literally diving into the deep end without a life vest.
Archives Guy has been not only patient but pretty humourous about this whole business. So even if we weren't understanding half the stuff like:
HDMI and the analog RCA cable passes 24/192, but the optical will choke the signal down to 24/96. The optical cable (also known as TOSLINK) can't support 24/192. It works fine for Dolby, DTS and lower sample rates, but not for hi rez such as 24/192. A PS3 connected to amp via optical digital cable sounds better if HDMI socket on amp and connected PS3 via HDMI cable.
phew?!
Also, a big thanks to all of the readers with great questions. It is our understanding that over the past year or so many of the thoughts and suggestions posted here have been incorporated into either this Volume or future volumes.
It is still our understanding that an official NYA FAQ will be up soon.
In the meantime, here are all the Q&A links. And -- as usual -- over in the right sidebar, a permanent link in the NYA section for Everything You've Ever Wanted To Know About The Neil Young Archives But Were Afraid To Ask.
Only 6 days, 9 hours, 23 minutes, and 32 seconds until June 2 (which is a world-wide holiday!)
UPDATE: It looks AG is back on-line *NOW*! Go here for more Archives Q&A.

AG-
Many thanks for your time and your input. :-)
Warner says my Archives has shipped! Woo hoo!!!!!
I'll probably just stare at it in disbelief for a few days after it comes.
To quote Modest Mouse:
"I just got a message that says
*yeah, hell has frozen over
I got a phone call from the lord sayin
'Hey boy go get a sweater, right now'"
Time to dig out a sweater!
I think we're over the limit on that other thread.
So. Preview Disc: Okay, that was easy. (Unless I didn't find everything, in which case it's hard.) I found two hidden tracks (right? are there more?). Did also find the letter vid and the four audio discussions which I had blown by before in my zeal to get through it all the first time, very cool! Very easy to navigate actually, great job AG + Team! And ... Wow. Amazing stuff, truly. My only complaint is that I could NOT find the lyrics sheet for Mustang, wtf? J/K. Since we seem to be stumbling over humor in here today, I thought I'd make it eminently clear that I was joking. : ) Yay Archives! This stuff is da bomb, yo. More more more! As an aside, I cannot stand how cute that dock pic is, omg. !

nkdlunch....I'll be staring at mine in disbelief for about a month until my player arrives :-)
i'd like to say I would use my download card to make CDs, but my computer is dead and in the shop.....funny...dead on all fronts. Ironic...
Karen, in case you missed it, there is also the one download track. It didn't find this right away but in the file cabinet if you go up there is a tab of photos with the amazing family photos. Neil at Falcon Lake in colour.
Syscrusher
Thankyou Archives Guy for all your time and patience. Well, I have my CD Boxset about a foot away from my keyboard, as I type.As an old fart who bought Decade on the day of release in 1977 (jeepers!),the memories are flooding back.
Boy,if the CD set is the economy version of The Archives ,I can't wait for my Blu Ray set, judging by the AG Threads. I better warn the Postman after all,so that he can take up AG'S pre Archives weight training programme !
Spud Murphy.
thx syscrusher. yes, i got the one download track. you mean, via the timeline blue pushpin, the "i wonder" track, right? and yes, the photos are amazing! love how they're presented too, awesome. the one of ny w/the girl on his lap holding the guitar made me fall off the couch laughing. haha. poor girl. he's more interested in the guitar. but lucky us that he was! : )
lovekaren
Ya, Karen we're talking about the same I Wonder.
But I don't know if we're talking about the same photo's. It's a separate gallery of photo's. It has neil camping in a tent and on the beach with his girlfriend.
They look so fresh. Plus about 30 others. At the top of the file cabinet i think.
Syscrusher
i did see the tent and pam smith/falcon lake photo, so we must have seen the same photos, all of which are fantastic. ! the one of ny as a little boy and the unknown girl sitting on the fence is the prairie wind album photo! i think.

Attention Syscrusher:
Since you are following this thread, I have some info for you.
Our smart guys have looked into the experience that you are having with downloading and then removing your ethernet connection.
Here are the findings:
"The application isn't designed to cache information about BD-Live content locally, so if the player is disconnected the content will still be on the player, but it won't know what the current pin configuration is, and won't show the content in the UI.
Once the player is connected again, the viewer will be able to see the content without needing to re-download it."
And you thought that I was geeky. :-)
We are continuing to look into this. In the meantime, You might want to consider running a full time ethernet connection to your player.
-Archives Guy
AG-
I think the "geeky" reference by Crakcle the other day was made out of pure spite and jealousy in response to the overwhelming attention you are getting in regards to the direction and tutelege provided to the Neil Young fans worldwide in light of this world shattering release of futuristic acheivmet and marraige of site, sound and history.
(whew, that almost hurt to get out)
Actually, I think he was busting your grapes!
Syscrusher-
Nice call on finding the EARLY YEARS file tab in the File Cabinet.
That folder takes one to a couple of shelves with old family photos on them.

Some good news... just in:
Obama says nation needs more nerds
see this USA Today article
http://content.usatoday.com/communities/theoval/post/2009/05/67407257/1
Perhaps Obama will also step up home entertainment tech training to better prepare the nation for high resolution audio and HD picture quality. :-)
-Archives Guy
Nice of Archives Guy to come around and answer peoples questions. I get a nice fuzzy feeling about all the pro-activeness from the Neil Young camp. Very cool, standup buncha people.
On another note, blah, archives shmarchives, when's the next album comin' out! Yeah!
Matthew:
New release??
June 2nd....we call it NY Archives Vol 1
AG-
I think we can nickname you Link-Ray, cause you have provided some good info-links here in support of your positions for all us tech-NO-wizards.
Thanks Archives Guy. I will try a permanent connection. Do you know if I can get an ethernet splitter that I can plug into my modem, and then have 2 cables coming out? One to my computer and one to my NYADP. (Neil Young Archives Dedicated Player)
Syscrusher
PS You guys should make stickers for our NYADP's
Syscrusher-
Someone else who is a bit better with home networking than I am might jump in here.
I think that you need an ethernet router/switcher rather than just a passive hub in order for the internet to work with both your home computer and NYADP.
-Archives Guy
We have a lot to do today, but I'll check back from time to to answer questions.
This isn't a formal session (t-shirt, fannel and jeans ok), but we are around to help.
-Archives Guy
AG, truly a big thanks to you and the whole Team for this one on one exchange with us.
The Archives are not the only first in the Industry, I think this hands on attention is something at least I have never seen.
Neil never stops progressing...how freakin' awesome is that eh?
Love the New Downloads today!!
LIVE RUST (Roger)
PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT:
There have been some server issues today with BD-Live creating problems with the downloads of I Wonder.
The issues have no been corrected and "I Wonder" is now available again as a download.
Folks such as LIVE RUST will just need to take the oath of silence for a while since they were subject to some of the server hic cups. We hope that this doesn't create any inconvenience.
thanks for your understanding.
-Archives Guy
Locking Lips now...shhhhhh.

Thanks again A. Guy, I'll take that info to the electronics store and ask there.
By the way is it pronounced Guy or Guy?
Syscrusher
Syscrusher-
It's an English?Canadian pronunciation: Guy
Not the French/Quebecois : Guy

PANASONIC BD 35 UPDATE
There were some issues reported last week about audio stuttering while watching the Archives during Info Card mode with a Panasonic BD35 player.
As with all players, one needs to set audio to PCM, but in depth testing on this player now shows that the Panasonic's Secondary Audio needs to be set to the OFF setting to prevent stuttering.
Rather arcane information, but none the less useful for those with the Panasonic BD35 player.
-Guy Archive
There were reports that the number of Archive CD, DVD and Blue Ray sets are limited. Is that true?
just sat through the first 4 blu ray discs....we in melbourne got ours yesterday...this is truly mind bending stuff..so many surprises that archives guy didnt tell us about..there are so many radio interveiws..live raps..radio add,s etc etc..the list is endl;ess..this is a monumental release..im truly in awe.....thank you world
Anon with limited set question-
I would imagine that the run is limited, but I don't have numbers.
The question that would follow is "how long until a second run comes out?"
Again, I don't know since we are on the production side, not manufacturing or sales.
-Archives Guy
Whazzup??? Did someone here get some extra and unintended early BD-Live bonus downloads?
Promise made, promise being kept.

Archives Guy;
Whats with the Parent Warning On All Formats Of The Box Set?
Surely it doesn't include "Fuckin Up" yet...
I think there's a parental warning because Neil accomplished all this without finishing high school. :D (And by the age of 26!!)
Archives are available already in Paris - France.
Yesterday, I've got my DVD version for 239 € on a FNAC shop !!!
Dear AG
Can you clarify if the Archives release date has been put back to 30 June or is this just for individual discs from the NY website?
(I hope not. Even Brian Wilson finished Smile!)
'Best
Percy
Archives Dates-
I don't have official word, but it seems like the individual discs aren't ready yet. Their manufacturing/packaging run would have been a different one than that of the full sets.
No need for panic or concern.
I also received a June 30th shipping dates for the stuff that I ordered off neilyoung.com, so we are all in the same boat.
A bit of a bummer for those who didn't order the whole ball of wax.

Greg and JCriswell:
I've always liked the parental warning that Bubbles does before the Trailer Park Boys shows. (Canadian TV...might be an obscure reference)
"...swearing, drugs, booze, dirty stuff. Ya know it's kinda shamelful..."
Ah Bubbles...another Canadian Icon! lol
Had to say, I stand corrected on the Harmonica Part for "Hello Lonely Woman" from the mouth of Comrie Smith himself. It was Neil after all...like I said in my comment, Neil always manages to surprise me.
Man, he's gotta play more Harp like that!!
LIVE RUST
AG, I was born in Bubbles territory, my Cousin is the Editor for the show and my Nephew Dated Lucy.
Bubbles "Here's what I know, Rick. If you love something, let it go. If it comes back to you, you own it. If it doesn't, you don't own it. And if it doesn't you're an a**hole, just like you"
LIVE RUST
LIVE RUST-
Your nephew dated Lucy? wow!
Does Ricky know???
He would either be f*#ckn' pissed off or it might not matterfy for him. There could be a prefectly good justificationism for it. :-)
Please tell your cousin how much I love the show.
If I didn't have this gig, I'd apply to work on it. seriously.
Great Bubbles quote. The mountain lion episode.
Born in Halifax.
-Archives Guy
Sorry to go WAAAY off topic, but here are a few Rickyisms for those not familiar with Trailer Park Boys.
Before you watch it, be advised that there is "...swearing, drugs, booze, dirty stuff. Ya know it's kinda shamelful..."
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TR3QHoqfhX8
Ricky to Alex Lifeson of Rush (in the episode where the boys kidnap Alex): " Play that Diane Sawyer song or something..."
ok...that should get it out of my system.
-Archives Guy
Thanks a lot "Archives Guy"
..oh by the way ..are we still tryin' to guess your identity?
Are you..are you..are you really...
..........."CABLE GUY!!!!!!"
Cable Guy was Jim Carrey, not moi.
Too funny. I will pass your resume it along! lol
Only 2 dates with Lucy and hush hush lol.
Everybody has to see the RUSH Episode.
Annapolis Royal for this guy.
And that Bubbles can play!!
Bubbles "Have a nice day, and go f*&k yourself."
Good 'ol NS
