Uncut Review of Neil Young's "Fork In The Road" Album
From a review of Neil Young's "Fork In The Road", The Album on Uncut.co.uk by John Mulvey:
There are many odd things here, of course, including the first single, “Johnny Magic”, with clipped, cutesy backing vox that – aligned with the song title – remind me terrifyingly of Jonathan King’s “Johnny Reggae” (big caveat: I haven’t heard that record in years and years, so could be completely wrong there). Two tracks slow down the chug: “Off The Road” is a ballad so exhausted and damaged, it almost seems to collapse, rather pleasingly; “Light A Candle” is more delicate and finessed and, with Ben Keith in evidence, might temporarily placate “Prairie Wind” fans.
But then “Fork In The Road” trundles off again, and provides us all with an, albeit snarky, mission statement: “Keep on blogging ‘til the power goes out. . .”

Hmmmm...regardless of any review (as they can sometimes be totally off) Neil's music, new and old, can be many things; sometimes perfect sometimes lacking something...(personally I feel it is more times than not, perfect)...but the one thing that is CONSTANT is they are ALWAYS interesting. Sorry but Neil's music/singing/guitar/albums/writing/performances/persona NEVER EVER BORE. I say give this record a chance... NEil could ALWAYS SURPRISE!
ROCK ON NEIL!
I agree Shittyhorse. Gawd the CD isn't even out yet to hear it properly and I'm certainly not gonna download from any Itunes, mp3 sites etc.
Yeah we all agree it's Neil being different again, but hell I've liked what I heard so far. Just listen to the words and you know whats on the man's mind and whether you love the tunes or not the message is still there, just like all of his songs to date.
I don't believe Neil's songs all have to "perfect" (ha! whats considered perfect to others, I dunno), beautiful or even melodious as long as they grab your attention and FITR CD certainly has done that.
Hey I like the off ball humour in FITR itself and after you hear it several times I find that I'm going around humming it all day long and quoting lines from it...and if thats not a sign that the song hasn't got my full attention then I must have picked it all subliminally. lol....
Keep on doing what you do Neil 'caus some of us left in the world still like surprises.
Blimey, someone's actually listened to the album before reviewing it.
There's a first...
Something else...
