Beware The Fake Archives Guy
Here's the story on Archives Guy here on Thrasher's Wheat.
There are actually 2 of them. One is bogus. H/She signs in lower case with an unregistered Google ID "-archives guy".
The real, deal Archives Guy posts with a registered Google ID that links to his profile.
We make every attempt to delete the fake AG posts as soon as they are spotted. If you see any, you can always flag for deletion (email thrasher@thrasherswheat.org).
Believe us when we say this problem is a source of unrelenting frustration that someone is getting their kicks out of being an impostor. In addition, they often make totally inappropriate/distasteful comments.
Furthermore, fake AG puts at risk this whole relationship of sharing important Archives info with fans who are looking at coughing up some serious $$$'s. It has not gone unnoticed that a great deal of adjustments are due to fans response on this blog, elsewhere on Rust and around the 'nets.
Beware the fake AG. Do not engage or feed the troll.
Also, it is encouraged that a profile ID account be established for posting comments. Here's how to establish a Google Accounts. This will give you a valid signature for posts. This will better enable us to sort the wheat from the chaff.
If you're still curious about all this you can read the comments policy for Thrasher's Wheat.
UPDATE: We have reason to believe that the Fake Archives Guy may be operating out of the Steve Hoffman Forum as a home base. An alert has been sent to Steve Hoffman and we understand that a TOS violation is in process to suspend the account.

The Fake Archive Guy is probably Percival. He's taking us for fools right now. I like the joke, anyway.
I wonder if this fake 'archive guy' is a guy named 'live rust' on 'YouTube' this guy seemes to be a really spiteful chap who seemes to dislike Neil's music? 'to all you critics sit alone'!
You're kidding, right?!?
The "real" Archives Guy can't seem to get the story straight either. So why blast a "fake" one?
...so much for "Computer Age"

how true. this site and rust have become nothing but sycophants drooling over everything this archives guy says. first it was "blu-ray and dvd only", then there was some "big announcement" that never materialized and now there is ambiguity about the feb 24th release date fostered by a.g. himself.
the best way this could have been handled was to just put it out whenever it comes out. no riling up the fanbase, no changing stories/formats and no amazon pre-order. when this archives set became more about pumping up the die-hards than about neil's vision for the set it became a joke.

Tharher: I'm sorry if this isnt the right place for this but this needs to be said: how dare you people bash Neil's new music so much so that an news story is printed on Rolling stone.com saying "Neil Young's FANS don't want new Neil Young album!" Are you F'n kidding me? This is some of the best music he's done in a while! When worlds collide, Light a Candle, Just singing a song, Fork in the road are all great songs! How fucking horrible is it when his fans are saying to him I hope your record company wont release this! Are you kidding? This just makes me sick and I and ashamed to be marked among you people who call your selves FANS! FANS!?? Are you kidding me? I'm dont feel Neil needs someone to defend him or his music, I just want to defend myself here and many others who are REAL fans of Neil Young and who feel this is GOOD MUSIC! And are welcoming of any new album THIS LEGEND makes!!! This is out of control. The album isn't even out yet and all of you are already judging it! THAT IS JUST MORONIC! Just like the archives! You don't even know the track listing yet and your bashing it?!?! People are just out of their minds!! AND YOU ONLY CARE ABOUT ANCIENT HISTORY! Call me what you will: a sycophant neil fan..whatever...just don't SPEAK FOR ME
Neil, if any of this gets back to you just know MOST of your fans want to see and HEAR ANY NEW ALBUM YOU PUT OUT and we FEEL YOU SHOULD JUST KEEP FOLLOWING THE MUSE WHERE EVER IT MY LEAD YOU...YOU DO STILL HAVE ME AND MANY MANY OTHERS...I CAN WAIT FOR THE ARCHIVES ANOTHER TWENTY YEARS...its not going anywhere...its in the ARCHIVES!! IT'S YOUR NEW MUSIC THATS IMPORTANT! Signed SHITTYHORSE (A REAL NEIL YOUNG FAN!)
Wow, the comments in this thread have been interwebz gold.
Don't worry Shittyhorse, Neil does what Neil wants to do. He's on your side. Couldn't find the article RS.com but it's now in The Guardian in the UK:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2009/jan/16/neil-young-fork-in-the-road
Keep on bloggin in the free world!
Punk David, you are noted too in the Guardian article!
First off...I'm not the LIVE RUST mentioned here, I am a Neil Fan who has a Neil Tribute Band. The other, I have no idea and not that it matters but, I just wanted to say it seems funny that articles can be written about how "Neil Fans" are upset that a New Album may push back the Archives. Somehow I think that Thrasher's Site and the Rust List, although great places for us Fans, can hardly be used to describe "all" of Neil's Fans. Geeze, some are only hearing about the Archives for the first time now...and yes I know this for a fact as "Neil Fans" come to our Shows. I am looking forward, as I always have, to Neil being Productive, Prolific, and at times Profound. Seems a lot to ask for but Neil always comes through...at least for this LIVE RUST.
Neil to his credit seems to take it in stride in the 'Fork' video. I think he's often way ahead of many fans. He's been criticized for things over the years, but he just keeps going forward, and then in retrospect many fans come around to seeing (and appreciating) where he was coming from, or he's do prolific they move on to focus on his next great project. Either way, the criticism seems petty when seen in context of what he's done and what he'll do. Second, I think the journalist on Rolling Stone.com deserves a black mark for writing a very slanted Anti-Neil article. For every complaint there is another fan praising but few if any of the positive comments were highlighted in the article. The cynic in me says that most journalists are at heart focused on getting paid so critical, slanted articles create controversy and they sell better. I don't think that author had something unique or sincere to say ... Finally, I think some people are wired to complain so they'll complain no matter how many great projects, shows, songs, album Neil does, they'll focus on the one aspect they don't like and blow it out of proportion. To Neil's credit he's made a career of completely ignoring the complainers, the journalists, and even devoted fans and all the while managing to stay a few steps ahead. As a last thought, I'm glad to hear that fake archives guy might be escorted off the site because being an imposter, and especially of Archives Guy, is the worst of all.
You guys can keep praising Neil for "moving forward", etc. And you can keep dismissing the critics as "complainers" who are harping on the negative. For me, I'm just sick of the mediocrity, and now the slip into awfulness. I've given Neil every benefit of the doubt over the years. I've bought all the new albums. But, I've got news for you: Nobody besides us small group of hard-core fans has given a darn about a Neil Young album since maybe Silver and Gold and probably not since Mirror Ball. Since Briggs died, it's been one misstep after the next, highlighted by Are You Passionate, Greendale, Prairie Wind, and now this monstrosity. These albums may become listenable after the 28th listen, but the non-fanatic dismisses them as slight and boring. It didn't used to be this way. Neil Young used to be great. Great. When was the last time there was any consensus that Neil Young released a "great" album. Ragged Glory? He used to be great, and that is why we like him today and still follow his output. But let's not pretend that this stuff is something it's not. At some point, you have to ask the objective observer what this music really is. Believe me, the objective observer will tell you that it is plain bad.

I dont know....losing Briggs definately is felt but trashing everything since then doesn't add up for me. I think that Greendale was and is brilliant. Funny thing is that I had never heard the album till probably the 3rd or fourth time I had seen it performed. I got hooked on it through some bootleg recordings. I could see (hear) how a lot of people could be dissapointed in the album. Hearing it live vs. hearing the cd was almost like hearing 2 completely different projects. The album was like a loose framework for (brilliant) live performances. I have a small collection of live bootlegs and lots of the music I just love. Particularly stuff that Neil did during the 80"s reacting to the first Bush's run at war. Its amazing to me that those songs are so pertinent today (only wish he played some of them again on this last go around) Nonetheless...I love one song (not sure of the year, but still relative) American Dream..I only knew it from these boots that I have. I couldn't believe my ears when I heard my TV playing this song and video just the other day...If I didn't know just how good this song actually is and was only exposed to the produced version I may be sounding a lot like you. Ther are lots of other tunes like that for me. C'mon...Fork in the Road is some Good stuff.
Big Rig is dissapointed. We know that by now. He doesn't need to repeat himself over and over.
Hi,
This is my first comment, so first of all thank you for the blog!
I've read on several websites/forums quotations of an Archives Guy comment about the blu-ray edition being not compatible with profile 1.1 blu-ray players. This comment was supposed to be here : http://www.thrasherswheat.org/2008/12/i-sing-song-because-i-love-man-i-know.html#comments
I can't find it. Does it mean that it was a fake comment from the fake Archives Guy? In case this was a fake Archives Guy comment, you should delete the copy here: http://www.thrasherswheat.org/2008/12/archives-update-from-archives-guy.html
Thanks,
Fabrice
@Fabrice,
I think I can clear that up. Profile 1.1 Blu-ray players are incapable of BD-Live (profile 2.0) playback. So, while a profile 1.1 player will be able to play the materials on the discs just fine, it will not be able to access the internet content, which require a profile 2.0 machine.
--PunkDavid
@ PunkDavid
Thanks for your answer. I knew I can't access the internet content without a profile 2.0 player. As long as I can play the "regular" content of the blu-ray with my old player, everything is fine.
Thanks,
Fabrice
Thanks for telling it like it is, Big Old Rig.
Some of the fanatics are going to refuse to see your point like the simple question about which was the last album that was considered a classic by the majority of hard core Neil fans. I think Ragged Glory or maybe Sleep With Angels?
Liking Neil or any other artist has never meant to mean agreeing with everything he says. After all, Neil has been known to contradiction which is not a rap against him but shows that at one point he can think one way and later changes his mind. Human nature. And I find it hard to believe some are not open to purchasing the Archives at a reasonable price and eagerly listening to it.
Hello Anonymous (strange name, by the way). I think you're right. Your arguments are worth listening to. I think the last great record was Neil Young. Or maybe Buffalo Springfield again. Let us be honest, and face the reality. For more than 40 years I have been waiting for an another Buffalo Springfield again, but it seems like the new songs are nor up to the 60's. Maybe next time. I think the only guys who deliver are Elton John and Paul McCartney. And maybe the Beach Boys. They are realy great.
Buffalo S
So true. But I think the last great song Neil wrote was Sultan. I'm still waiting for another Sultan. He once did it, so I know he can. All later songs are just shit. On every record he sings and plays that electric guitar. I wish he would be more like Cliff Richard.
Shadowman
so did you get rid of the fake archives guy over on that forum? 'cause, you know,
he ain't me.
