More Details on Neil Young's Archives Vol. 1
UPDATE: It looks the site has been pulled down due to errors that folks have commented on this blog.
Aside from familiar marketing language, new pricing info on pre-orders is listed:
- $299.99 - Blu-ray
- $199.99 - DVD
- $99.99 - CD
No vinyl or MP3 pre-order details, tho.
The Bluray price is now lower than the Amazon.com price so this looks like the deal. Not sure what that means for those who pre-ordered earlier.
Note that pre-orders receive a rare 7" with Squires songs Aurora and Mustang. Not sure why it's rare since such a single never existed?
Or maybe it is the "Sultan/Aurora" single? That makes this is a real bargain including a single worth $3,400 for a $99 purchase! Now that would be a real deal.
More on the endless surreal odyssey that we perversely find fascinating called The Archives.

Huh?
I pre-ordered on Amazon last year for like $400???
Can I cancel? If I do pre-order from Warners will my credit card be debited right away?
Not sure I want to risk tying up funds again and finding that its delayed for another 6, 12+ months.
Joe the Fan
Wow...i cant wait to purchase Fillmore East and Massey Hall....AGAIN!
Neil's Archives = RIP OFF CITY
No pre-ordering for me. I won't be ordering until the darn things actually in the shops (although there probably won't be any shops left by the time that happens...)
TL in the UK
It says Massey is previously released on the CD but not the DVD/Blu Ray versions.
Funny because I have a Massey DVD in my hands?
Again, they want us to pre-order but no track list still.
guess amazon was a pre-order pre-order.
1. The site says the CD only version includes "the Book", but the Book is not shown in the photo. I believe the Archives Guy said the Book would NOT come with the CD only version.
2. I can't believe people are still belly-aching about having to re-purchase Massey and Fillmore East. You get 8 CDs for $99. That's $12/CD. If you already bought Massey + Fillmore, you're getting 6 CDs for $99. That's $16.50/CD. Big whoop!
3. I'm still holding out for a definitive answer on whether these will be available on vinyl. I'd happily pay more than $99 for the Archives on vinyl.
I have two questions..
1. When is the release date?
2. How do we get hold of them here in the UK? Please don't say there will be an even longer wait for us non-USA folk?
I don't know about how you guys use Amazon, but my price is always guaranteed for a pre-order. If I pre-order for 500 and it drops at some point in release date to 300, I get for 300. So Joe, your $400 pre-order she be dropped to whatever the lowest price was since you pre-ordered...
Plus, I'm pretty positive the Amazon price will drop now that the list price has dropped...
Regarding the new lower price at the Warner site, LLR posted at Rust that while the new DVD price is definitely lower than the Amazon pre-sale price, the Blu-ray is STILL cheaper at Amazon because shipping is free from Amazon on orders over $25, but the shipping from Warner is $40.
http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/rust/message/221414
Something to consider before cancelling your Amazon order. BTW, I have written Amazon an email notifying them of the new prices at Warner to see if they will lower their prices in the face of my threat to cancel my order. :-P

Great news.
Hope they decide to include every rare thing including 'High School Graduation.' I know some say it's not that great but I think this original is way better than any song he's covered. And in an Archives concept, it should include everything warts and all as Neil said.
And it would be nice if the Journey Through The Past soundtrack is made available on cd. And what about Time Fades Away?
time fades away stuff will be on volume 2, no?
One of the reasons volume 2 is looking mighty impressive. Time Fades Away, Tonight's the Night (original Briggs version?), Homegrown?!?, etc.
Important question for Archives Guy.
I have always had issues trying to buy music on the release date.
Amazon can't get it here on the release date. And HMV very often does
not have the item(see lou reed's berlin among others) on the release
date and therefore do not deserve my business.
I would like to order off of neilyoung, com and especially would like
to receive that bonus 7" aurora/sultan disc.
Seeing how there are so many hardcore Neil fans in Canada, is there
anything your team can do to allow us Canadians (and Mexicans too) to
order off your website AND receive the archives ON the release date.
I'll go to HMV if I have to, but I might just explode if I go down
there again and find they don't have the item again.(I really don't
want to give them that much money)
Syscrusher
if you roll the mouse on the cd version, the caption says 8 cds + 2 dvds..
whatup with that?
Well, hold everything!! (like your breath...gasp...)
Warner now has the release as TBS 2009, for what it's worth.
i hate to sound stupid but what are topanga 1, 2 and 3?
Topanga is Topango Canyon in La where Neil lived with his first wife Susan in like 1969 and 1970 where After the gold rush was recorded .
Why would anyone pre-order the Archives without the track listing? I think its about about time they tell us exactly what's going to be on them?
I'm glad to see the DVD cost has come down so drastically. This makes much more sense. I'd estimate that a collectors edition hardback book with the box/poster, etc may in itself go for $40, so you have a 10 DVD set for $160 which isn't THAT outrageout for music+video.
Also, an 8 disk CD set sits reasonably at $100. Remember those 4 CD career box sets with a booklet which would go for about $60??? Again...it's in the ballpark of reasonability.
So what's up with the BD pricing? I guess the main reason I'm forking out for the BD is for the Free Downloads. Is it that much of a big deal? Is it worth the extra $100? The HD picture would be a "nice to have". The high resolution is a "don-t care", as I do NOT have the ears nor the stereo system for it. Heck, My HDTV is pretty old and not that big.
I've been calling the BD-Live feature, "A lifetime admission to the Barn", but who knows what that's worth in the long run. I REALLY HOPE that Neil makes it worth a lot to those who stand by HIS VISION.
I also wonder how long he will be actively maintaining his website which does the Archives downloads. That is work requiring pay.....
in reply to this article-
There are numerous errors on the Archives pre-order web page that are being addressed. You may find that the page goes dark until corrections are made.
A number of you have already noticed some of the glaring errors.
We apologize for any confusion this premature listing of the preorder has caused.
Track listing coming soon.
have a good weekend,
-Archives Guy
random notes:
The exclusive 45 single IS " Aurora" and "Mustang", not a re-pressing of the "Aurora" and "The Sultan".
This vinyl will only be offered thru orders placed on neilyoung.com
The CD set in fact does not have "the book". It has 17 page booklet that is gives indepth details on all the tracks. "The book" is only available with the BD and DVD editions.
BD-Live files live on a server, not via a website. Nothing to maintain, it's just a place to keep all the BD-Live files.
-Archives Guy
So, I have to ask - what's up with a disc numbered Disc 0 ?
Thanks for all of the info.
Tom
how do I get permisssion to access server for the archives, thank you please..zejt
Although I'm totally excited about all this new info and the upcoming arrival of the Archives, I'm hesitant to place a pre-order. I want to, but it seems to me that Warner's should at least give a release date before taking any orders.
You don't have permission to access / on this server.
Has anybody else trouble accessing the warnerbrosrecords site?
They might only allow access to the site to American IP adresses ?
Hi Archives Guy,
Thanks again for all the Archives info.
Just out of interest, can people from the UK and elsewhere order from the pre-order site, or should we wait for Warner UK to put it on pre-sale?
Will the UK version still come with the vinyl if we pre-order?
Thanks again mate,
Thos.
Still can't open the link. "access denied" Anyone else having issues with the archives site. thanks Zejt up in T.O.
I am. whats the deal? I wanted to pre-order today! Get it up and running!
I don't believe it. I'm sorry but Neil Young has been talking about this massive archive projects since the late 1970s! In all that time what have we ever seen? A few scattered live albums. And that's it. He has hinted at hundreds of unreleased songs, buried masterpieces, etc. But whereas Bob Dylan has actually brought out several volumes of lost treasures, Neil continually puts it off -- keeping fans waiting and wondering, hoping that maybe, in 2010... etc. Don't get me wrong. I'd love to see and hear this wonderful project. I just don't believe Neil has as much up his sleeve as he claims. Would love to be proven wrong though.
signed, Mike from Fresno
Archives guy? Any word on when this will be back up? I'd love to pre-order as soon as possible (while i have the cash!) any projections would be much appreciated...thanks
I've pre ordered today form Italy the DVD version for 199.99 + 24.99 S&H
the date announced to me by email is 3/24/2009
anyone confirm this?
Gianfausto
mike from fresno...I believe once ALL the archives sets are out we will look on them with much wonder and awe...
I totally feel that the fillmore east, sugar mountian, and Massey hall are friggin' awesome a worth the wait. I just saying don't speak too soon.
Hey Archives Guy,
Thanks for all the updates.
There's a lot of talk about what the blu ray will offer compared to the rest of the packages. I wonder if you can give us any idea of what updates etc this will provide.
I have a vision in the future of being able to download a good majority of Neils gigs.
Metallica do it at the moment and every one of their current and recent gigs are available for about $10.
It would be great if a whole tour was available so you could download the gigs you were at or with the best setlist.
Mind you this doesn't need to be on blu ray although we know Neils views on the sound issue.
Cheers Des
UK
I don't know. This is just getting weird. In a bad way. The misspellings and errors on the site. No track Listings. Prices changing with the barometer. Contradictory comments from Neil himself about what it would/wouldn't contain. The release of material that will be repeated with the box set... The commitment to a platform that may soon be outdated. The presumed collective 'huh' that will arise when folks actually see the indulgent nonsense that is JTTP...
Box sets sets are hard (look at the fumbles with the first Byrds, the Kinks... the disappointing Springfield) Much has to do with errant song selection, which could have alleviated by some fan input. Some perspective.
Appreciate all the humanitarian good Neil has done. And recognize he's still trying. But he's apparently no archivist. And he owes his fans better. Beware men who build monuments to themselves.
I believe Neil is doing this more for his fans and not so much for himself.I think he's rather be make NEW music.
Actually I can't recall a more fan friendly project...and its been via this web site....(thanks Thrasher and Archives Guy!) Neil and his team hear what we are saying and they've already complied in several aspects...I think we need to wait until it comes out before we judge the thing and also keep in mind this in ONLY VOL.1- the first 10 years. Neil as been around making music for almost 50 years!
Hear Hear, Shittyhorse!
"I'm a big rockstar, my sales have tanked. But I still got you.. Thanks."
To Archives Guy,
Will the songs Aurora and Mustang still be included in Blue-ray ,DVD and cd sets even if you don't pre-order?I would hope so.
The Mugwump
Hey Neil! Take your time! I can wait. I have patience.
what a clusterfuck this archives deal is. thanks for more confusion archives guy.
in reply to questions-
YES! Aurora and Mustang appear on Disc 0 of the BD and DVD editions. The vinyl 45 is a special thing for those vinyl lovers. Folks who actually listen to records. the next best versions are the 24/192 tracks on the BD version.
The pre-oder page will return when it is right and approved by us.
Sorry for any confusion, folks. The goal of our interacting with you is to help, not confuse. Without reporting to you about why we took the pre-order down, confusion would be all that you have. Think about that for a moment.
I can't help you with any business/commerce questions about pre-orders, but I believe that the Amazon store and the Warners/NY store are completely different deals.
We're being more than real straight forward with you here. Cut us some slack as we try to deal with the suits.
Next up for ya- free digital download with purchase of BD or DVD editions...as requested???
If I may quote one of the new songs:
Instead of cursing the darkness
Light a candle for where we’re going
There’s something ahead worth looking for
-Archives Guy
I am maybe older then many of you but been a Neil fan since i was a kid over 40 yrs ago. This archive is great . We did not have downloads, PCs, cell phones with cameras, website. If you were there you heard it if not you didn't no box sets with previously unreleased tunes . If you heard it on the radio it was out otherwise to us it didn't exist .Enjoy the ability to have this now . Peace to all . Thank you archive guy.
I hope everyone's laughing because this whole "Archives Guy" thing and the rest of it is such a joke.
Thrasher, rather than keeping an ongoing series of false rumor threads going on this otherwise well-run website, why not ditch them and just wait for new stuff to be released? The archives thing just makes it all look ridiculous.
I'm seriously beginning to think that this is a practical joke too...I'm afraid I may have wasted a lot of time watching things unfold on this board.
I am actually enjoying all these rumors and updates from Archives Guy. I truly believe he has the real info, but even if he doesn't -- oh well, it sure has been fun trying to keep on top of it.
Also, if the higher power has actually listened and plans to include a free digital download with Blu-Ray copies of the Archives -- Hallelujah!
Thanks for all the updates Thrasher and Archives Guy!
The "free" digital download with Blue Ray version just sold it for me. If this is true then I'm in for sure. I want the Blue Rays .. but what I want more is the music to be able to take WHEREVER I WANT! Be it an mp3 player or a CD or wherever. Hard to listen to Blue Rays in the freaking car .. and let's be honest ... who's going to sit in front of the TV with a $300 set of music and be content with ONLY being able to hear it in that setting? Talk about an idiotic and impractical idea.
Let's hope the "free" downloads are for real ... if they are I'm buying ... if they are not ... NO WAY.
Neil MUST have read the PT Barnum handbook.Nuff said??@)
Archives Guy. Thank you for listening. Free Digital Downloads with the Purchase of BluRay or DVD Editions is a nice concession to the fans. As is the CD version. They are naysaysers here, but I think you have come to Thrasher's Wheat in equal amounts to learn as you do to communicate. And I'm happy to have been invited into the process!
My plan was to purchase the BD edition well before I actually acquired a player. It's odd, but after all these years, just knowing I have the archives will suffice for a while. Just as third generation DVD players have been far superior to 1st gen DVD players, I'm sure the same will be true for BD. And I just don't want to rush into purchasing a BD right now. But, now I will be able to hear the tunes (albeit on earbuds into an apple) right away.
Thanks again for keeping us a part of the process!

I had planned to purchase the BluRay version and download an audio-only version of the Archives illegally, but I can sleep peacefully knowing that (a rumor exists which says) Neil and his team will include a free digital download for Blu-Ray purchasers.
Should it actually be released on the February 24th (which happens to be my 24th birthday), I'll buy the Blu-Ray version, and take a month off work to enjoy it in all its glory.
Can't wait.
Neil can count on another $500 donation from me in 2009. Too much great stuff to purchase!
Archives Guy Thanks for being so informative...and patient. Just remember that fan comes from fanatic.
I'm just looking forward to another great year with the undeniably independent artist that is Neil Young.
Darren L
So... lemme get this straight. Archives Guy just confirmed that Aurora and Mustang are not on the CD or vinyl versions? Maybe not even in the MP3 version? How does that make you feel? Me, I'm really looking forward to hearing the early instrumental stuff, even if it's goony. I'm kinda cheesed off that they couldn't find room in an 8 CD box set (folks, that's up to 640 minutes) for, what, four and a half minutes of surf rock? Oh well. Still looking forward to it, if it ever comes.

"Next up for ya- free digital download with purchase of BD or DVD editions...as requested???"
Archives Guy,
I can only say thank-you for taking into account our concerns on this matter. I know, most of us are a bunch of gits, but I know for a fact that you will now have sold the BD versions to a lot more people now - including myself.
Thanks for all you've done so far, I'm sorry for all the hassle you seem to get on here from some people, they don't realise how much you've done for us so far...
Thanks again, really can't wait now, I don't have to consider what to buy.
If there isn't an international (inc. Europe) presale, then I'll probably just order from NY.com, especially with the free 45!
Davie from Scotland
If the free digital download with the Blu-Ray version is true, then I agree with Davie, it will have sold me on the 'deluxe' version. I don't even have a Blu-Player yet, I'll get one as and when the box set arrives.
I have every Neil release on vinyl, so the 7" single is a nice bonus.
I really do need to see a detailed track listing prior to placing the order though.

Hi Archives Guy,
Do you know the lyrics from Ben Folds' song 'Rock Star' (sung to a rock star from his wife's perspective)? They seem particularly apt right now, what with all the complaining going on here!
"If you want to be free,
Then I want you to be.
You’re not mine anymore -
You’re public property
You’re a slave to these people who
don’t even know you,
You think they adore you -
They do, then they throw you away.
You’ve got to give the people what they want,
Got to give the people what they want,
Rock Star."
At the end of the day, we're the FANS, and Neil is the ARTIST. There's not one of us who could do what Neil does, so we should be thankful that he is listening to our opinions and trying to meet our (in some cases, unreasonable) demands. This is Neil being NICE, not Neil trying to rip us off.
Clearly he doesn't need the money, and I imagine his record label are getting pretty pissed off with all the constant delays - but he is trying to get it right for US, the fans.
I'm thrilled that there will be a CD version which I'll get on the day of release, and when I can afford the fancy kit I'll upgrade to Blu-Ray and have access to the online archives as-and-when they get uploaded. Sounds like a real fan's wet dream, no?
So thanks again AG and Thrasher, and as the Guinness slogan says, Good things come to those who wait!
Thos, UK.
Archives Guy,
Thanks to you and the whole Neil Young team for tuning your ears to the constructive input of Neil's staunchest fans.
I know that I suggested A CD version with every BD version purchased back in November. The solution of offering a downloadable version is spot on. Thanks for the consideration.
I Used to Be A Fireman
Niagara Falls, NY
P.S. We know that the team, and Neil, have been working hard at getting this Archives thing together, and getting it right, all while it appears that numerous NEW Neil Young project releases are in the que. So please ignore those who go overboard and seem never satisfied.
for reply to comments by moi-
RPI:
Aurora and Mustang are on all editions of the Archives. I'm so focused on the hi end audio, that I failed to list the CD and digital download versions.
Yes, everybody gets these tunes.
The following comment means we are working on. It's not a done deal yet.

Hey I have been ready since i held the Lucky Thirthteen on vinyl in my hands back when. thanks Neil lets post up. BluRay all the way. Zejt
I will be purchasing this in the U.S. before moving back to Europe later on in the year...
Can someoe please confirm for me that the BLU-RAY version will be REGION FREE?
New is always better.
"I always like to put the newest thing out. That always has precedence, so Archives may end up getting delayed because of that. But it's not delayed because it's not ready, it's delayed because there are new things. New is always better."

SEE, I TOLD YOU THEY ARE LISTENING TO US!!! THIS JUST PROVES TO ME YOU GUYS ARE ARE DOING THIS FOR THE FANS!! THANK YOU NEIL AND ARCHIVES GUY! AND YES I CAN WAIT FOR THE ARCHIVES! RELEASE THE NEW MUSIC! AND KEEP IT COMING!!! THANK YOU
in reply to the Region question:
This has been addressed a few times, but you would have to go thru old posts too find the answer.
YES, the BD edition is Region Free.
How about the Sharks beatin' those Red Wings last night, eh? great game!

Archives Guy:
Is Vinyl in the mix or has it been definitively ruled out?
Thanks.
How long does it take to fix the Archives site? I thought it would be up by now and include the Archives tracklists.
Archives Guy:
I'm sure this has been addressed somewhere but I didn't feel like searching. I heard rumours that the Archives would NOT contain the entire studio albums (NY, EKTIN, ATGH, H). I'm not sure if this is true or not, but if so, I would hope that the missing tracks are included in a BD-Live download sometime in the future.
And to all those who are complaining about having to buy Filmore and Massey twice. I knew before these were released that they would also be included in the Archives box, maybe you chose to ignore that, but enough already. Like you don't already own two copies of a ton of other albums.
Archives guy? Any indication on when this site will be up again? I'm ready to pre-order but only from Warners or Neil's site. Please let us know, if possible. Thanks a lot.
Archives Guy whets our appetites with us with: "Track List Coming Soon".
I've been drooling for days now! Speculating hard for at least 8 months trying to put this thing together in my head...looking for clues...
I know it won't be everything. I know it's "finished" other than BD downloads.....BUT can we just know for sure???? Pls!!!!
Archives Guy be a Santa Claus post up> thanks Zejt
After fits & bursts of patience & impatience I'm adopting a calm philosphy of, "Whatever will be,will be."
Neil is the genius singer/songwriter/guitarist all rolled into one ,of our age & has given us so much already. We owe him - not the other way round!
Talk of the "Greedy Hand",actually reminds me of some of his fan's behaviour. The insults directed at Neil and his team Including Archives Guy,have been unworthy.
Thanks Archives Guy for your patience advice & answers to all of our questions, even the daft requests & queries !
