Submit a Question for Neil on Charlie Rose Show Tonight

UPDATE:
The interview has been postponed for later in the week. It will be a full hour.

Neil Young will be appearing on the Charlie Rose sometime in the next week tonight on PBS.

Charlie's website http://www.charlierose.com/home has an area where you can submit questions for Neil. Questions can be e-mailed to charlierose@pbs.org

Here's a few we might hear:

- What's that song "Powderfinger" all about?

- Why did Lynyrd Skynyrd hope that Neil Young will remember that a southern man doesn't need him around anyhow?

So after you submit Neil a question on Charlie's site, come back and drop a comment with your question. Then we can nominate some for consideration!

Thanks Roger!

Oh, come on, not release TFA again!
Please ask some intelligent questions.
For example: About who are you singing in Unknown Legend. Ha, ha, ha.

Neil, what are your musical plans for the near future? Is there another studio album on the cards? Also, any ideas on when the first archives volume will be released?

By the way, the recent gig in Manchester uk was possibly the best i've ever been to!

Is it true that, during the Tonight's The Night tour in 1973, you did not change your clothes, and drank tequila during every show?

That tour is famous for being, arguably, the first punk tour. Will you release any concerts from it in the Archives Performance Series?

How are you enjoying being reunited with Rick Rosas and Chad Cromwell, your rhythm section from The Bluenotes (1988) and The Lost Dogs (1989)? How does this band compare with Crazy Horse, your primary backing band?

Speaking of Crazy Horse, can fans expect The Horse to ride again?

You once said that Sonic Youth's "Expressway To Yr Skull" is the best guitar song you've ever heard. What are some of your other favorite guitar songs?

If the Linc-Volt makes it to Philadelphia, will you let me take a ride?

Here's my question-
"Neil, I understand why you have the current line up for the European tour and the earlier American and European versions of it. But what is your thinking about Crazy Horse these days? I know from personal experience how difficult it can be trying to keep a band somewhat together; your ability to maintain all of your associations for so many years is impressive. So how is the current state of your relationship with the Horse?"

Todd

What's that with 'A day in the life' as an encore during the Euro tour?

(Great to see you cover it and somehow it fits in there too, but...why?)

Neil, I’m a longtime fan of your music career and have been very impressed with your philanthropic efforts through Farm Aid, your work to bring awareness to alternate forms of energy as well as your support over the years for numerous different causes. Those efforts tie in well with a long career singing about a wide range of subject matter that has ranged from deeply personal matters (On The Beach record, Tonight’s The Night record, etc.) to complex love songs (You And Me, Razor Love, etc.) to themes that speak of economic & social injustices (Ohio, Vampire Blues, Rockin’ In The Free World, Depression Blues, This Old House, etc.) to scores of other topics too. You seem to have a great understanding of what’s really going on in this world & express it so well. I hate to bring up money, yet when you hit the road with CSNY—a band closely tied with the counterculture, 60s revolution & what’s supposed to be socially & economically “right” in this beautiful land—the ticket prices are absurdly high. Is it, “Well, the Stones, McCartney, The Eagles, U2, etc. are doing it so why don’t we?” Or, “It doesn’t matter because all the good seats & skyboxes are bought by corporations anyway?” This has confused me ever since you guys got back together in 2000. Even your tour in the Fall 2007 was very, very pricey. On the other hand, since Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band reformed back in 1999 they have been putting on huge stadium & arena shows all around the U.S. for the past 10 years and their tickets haven’t topped $99. Why is this and do you see why it’s an issue with your middle-class fanbase? You’re a great artist, your music’s alive as ever and you seem like a genuinely good dude. Hopefully you’ll swing through Chicago again soon because I saw you in November at the Chicago Theatre and it was fantastic.

Hey, '7/16/2008 05:49:00 AM Anonymous'

That's got to be one of the most stupid comments I've read in a long time.

So, let me get this straight, by your reckoning no one can voice an opinion on anything they don't have a degree in. Right?

Do you vote? I assume you do. But have you got a degree in all the various fields of expertise that constitute modern government? If not then surely you shouldn't vote, and nor should the vast majority of the population.

Don't get me wrong, I agree it's important for people to have INFORMED opinions – which I think, by in large, Neil has – but to suggest you need degrees in all areas you voice an opinion about is, quite frankly, ridiculous.

That's an interesting question Sandy! Highlights of NY shows for me are always the gaps in between songs. The fine moments nobody in the band nows which song will be played next. Just because NY changed his mind during the set.

Good for you, I'm glad you have a PhD in International Studies from Columbia University. Well done.

I have a BTEC diploma in Graphic Design from Suffolk College myself.

My point stands. Does the fact that someone has not studied a subject at degree level preclude them from voicing an opinion on said subject, as long as that opinion is reasonably well informed?

I understand your point that you don't think that Neil is informed enough. Fair enough, that's your PhD opinion. My problem is your suggestion that unless you have studied to a certain level in said subject, your opinion is some how worthless. I'm sure there are many things that you have strong opinions about that you have not studied at degree level.

Let's see... Global warming. Do you have an opinion? Or does the fact that you don't have a PhD in climate studies preclude you from having an opinion?

I have listened to "Flags Of Freedom" from Living With War
several times today and I'm blown away by the picture you paint in this song. I have no ties to the military, but feel like you have created an image right out of Mayberry {Andy would be proud}.

The lyrics ...
"Have you seen the flags of freedom
What color are they now?
Do you think that you believe in yours
More than they do theirs somehow?"
... leave me speechless.

I've been a fan for 40 years - can't wait for Archives.

It's too late, but:

Neil,

Given your current opposition to the Iraq War, do you now regret having recorded "Let's Role" after 9/11?

"Let's roll for freedom,
Let's roll for love,
We're going after Satan,
On the wings of a dove."

Or were these lyrics supposed to be ironic? (If so, many people missed the irony and thought you were advocating some kind of punative war. You knew this from the belacose cheering that greeted the song at live concerts.)

It's great that you opposed the Iraq occupation on Living with War in 2006, but a rational voice for peace back in 2001 might have done more good.

So, do you feel in any way responsable for helping Dick Cheney and Don Rumsfeld sell the American people on the idea of an invasion? Or does an artist have no responsiblity for how his message is interpreted?

The wanker who said "could you tell us where you earned your degree in political science, or, at least how many college credits you have?" is a tit head. Neil Young also doesn't have a degree in economics or even an MBA, yet he has amassed a tremendous personal fortune. How can that be? It shouldn't have happened; he's not...qualified...!

Re: "Let's Roll".... Todd Beamer said "let's roll" to his wife on his cell phone prior to hanging up and trying to save Flight 93 in Pennsylvania. Listen to any interview Neil did around the release of 'Are You Passionate?' (or the lyrics of the song). It's about Todd's heroism.

I must admit that I like "Last Child" by Aerosmith slightly better. ;)

The best interview with Neil I've ever seen, and I've witnessed plenty.

Neil was lucid, open and revelatory. Those who have criticized him for being aloof and disconnected should heed his call for unity. He is a "uniter", not a partisan.

Our "leaders" should be so passionate.

May "THE SPIRIT" continue to guide him...
