Mining for Hearts of Gold

Neil Young on the slopes of Park City, Utah
photo by Patrick Mcbride, PARADE Magazine

Lots of links on the Heart of Gold film.

The popular Sunday newspaper PARADE Magazine has a feature article "Neil Young: "I Just Keep Going". Also, a nice Neil photo gallery.

Over on, a piece on Neil Young and the American family: "Neil Young, iconoclastic troubadour for decades of counter-culture in the United States, has made the ultimate American family film."

This review from New York Observer challenges the above assumption on family values. The review by Ron Rosenbaum is rather dense and heavy on analysis:
"Mr. Demme’s film is in many ways both beautiful and respectful. But by exalting rural virtues—in effect, by equating “rural” with “virtue”—and by making a hymn of praise for the prairie wisdom of the Great White North, Neil’s Canadian prairie roots, he verges on rural supremacism. By that I mean the ingrained American nativist, puritanical distrust of (and distaste for) the urban, the cosmopolitan, the seductive sins of sophistication, irony and complexity. Instead, simple is always best. Or less dangerous.

And so, in his extremely well-meaning way, Mr. Demme—well known as an admirably socially engaged director—has made perhaps the most reactionary film of the past year.

Reactionary in the sense that it implicitly gives the impression that family values of a certain kind—the Great White North, Great White Nashville kind—are the only true values. If you stay close to the land and practice rural virtues, you’ll go to heaven, (as long as you’re a rich rock—sorry, “country-rock”—star). Conventionality rules, dude!"

A classmate of Neil Young reviews HoG by Norm Ornstein. With lots of innnarestin' comments.

Hey Thrasher,

Back atcha with thanks for the link...I had several hits on The World Wide Glen within an hour of you linking me.

So again, many thanks. You have a great site here...probably the best I've found on the web for Neil Young info. I'm not the html master you are, but if you can offer any tips on how to generate more hits for my little site, I'd be all ears. Again, back atcha on the link though. Cheers!

I would like to post a considered thought for Mr. Rosenbaum. As a lifelong resident of the Midwest, I can understand Neil's fond reminiscences of life on the prairie. I certainly don't consider them to be denigrations of urban life; merely affirmations of a solid way of life. We're not all reactionaries out here and are deservedly proud of our roots. Nothing against New York, you understand ...

Neil Young has been such an influence in the relationship between myself and my husband of 33 yrs. The day I asked my husband out he was listening to after the gold rush, that became our song and whenever there were troubles in our lives it was to Neil's music for comfort and affirmation of that perfect time when youfirst me the person you know to be the only important person in the world for you.So I thank you Neil for giving us that and thank you for Prairie Wind, it makes me cry, but I love it.

Thanks, Linda.

I agree - "Heart of a Gold" is a great family film. My wife and three of my four sons went to see it and soaked it up. However, my 5 year old cried - he kept waiting for his favorite song on Prairie Wind - He was the King - and for some reason, it was the only song left out. I assured him that they would probably pair it with Old King (which I has heard was part of the second half) - when the credits rolled over Old Laughing Lady, he burst out in tears and I had to carry him out of the movie, explaining to all the onlookers why. I guess listening to Prairie Wind every day on the way to day care has its cost.
