Made in Manitoba: A Musical Legacy by John Einarson

Acclaimed rock historian John Einarson has written a new book titled Made in Manitoba: A Musical Legacy.

Last we saw author Einarson, he was supporting a fellow Canadian writer Kevin Chong launching Neil Young Nation” in Winnipeg. Einarson has been a long time contributor to the Neil Young Appreciation Society's Broken Arrow Magazine, as well as, author of numerous books including Aurora: The Story of Neil Young & The Squires.

Of course, the book is of particular interest to Neil Young fans, tracing Neil's early travels with the Squires through the Winnipeg music scene in the 1960's.

The book also chronicles the careers of other Manitoba, Canada artists like Randy Bachman and the Guess Who. So why does the sparsely populated Manitoba produce such an array of musical talent?

According to Winnipeg's Randy Bachman, it is the cold weather itself which helped to create a hot Winnipeg music scene. In an interview prior to this year's Juno's Awards, Bachman says:

"Because of the climate . . . you're kind of six months underground in your basement. [The community clubs made it] pretty much like a little Liverpool. There must have been 150 bands from '62-'69 with hundreds of places to play - community centres, church halls. A big dance was the school gymnasium."

John Einarson writes:

"One of the things I hope people who read the book come away with is an appreciation for the talent that has come from and continues to come from this province."
