DUME Coming Feb 23rd - Another "Lost" Neil Young & Crazy Horse Album

Neil Young & Crazy Horse's  "lost" album Dume is a limited edition, all analog vinyl pressing scheduled for release on Feb 23rd.

With 16 recordings, some of which were part of the historic ‘Zuma’ album sessions and others previously unreleased, the album's vinyl release is being eagerly awaited after news emerged several years ago of future Archives releases.

Dume, an album of songs from the Zuma era, and Hitchhiker, an acoustic LP from the mid-Seventies, was recorded at Producer David Briggs' house on Point Dume, CA. The Dume album includes such outtakes as the original Sedan Delivery (which later surfaced on Chrome Dreams), Powderfinger, Ride My Llama and Born to Run. 

 

The Dume album was included in Neil Young Archives Volume II (1972 - 1976) Boxset as Disc #8.

Dume (1975) not only widens the scope on Zuma by about half an hour, but reveals some of the incredible candidates left off that album, such as an earlier version of “Powderfinger” and electric takes on “Ride My Llama”, “Pocahontas”, and amazingly, even “Kansas” and “Hawaii”.

“Too Far Gone” and “No One Seems To Know” appear a year before the live takes on Songs For Judy; “Born To Run” is not the Bruce song, but a Neil original tried and abandoned over the decades. Look Out For My Love (1976) is even more sprawling, the continuing adventures of the refurbished Crazy Horse alongside that year’s CSNY experiment that dwindled down to the short-lived Stills-Young Band, culminating in another stab at “Human Highway”. But first we get a transcendent “Separate Ways” that would have tilted Long May You Run even further in Neil’s favor, a band take of “Traces”, and two tracks with the Crosby-Nash vocals still intact.

A studio rehearsal video from the late 2000 Toast sessions with Crazy Horse on  Sights & Sounds | Times-Contrarian | NYA. 

Titled "How Ya Doin’?', the video is about 22 minutes of various jams of the song "Mr Disappointment".  While  the video has been previously available on NYA's Movietone for RUST levels subscribers, it is now playable for non-members.

Neil Young wrote that the songs “were so sad at the time that I couldn’t put it out. I just skipped it and went on to do another album in its place.” (The reason for said sadness, again to quote Neil from that same post: “The music of Toast is about a relationship. There is a time in many relationships that go bad, a time long before the break up, where it dawns on one of the people, maybe both, that it’s over. This was that time.”)

As the one who has supposedly seen every Crazy Horse filmed performance so far, I was stunned to find another that i had not fully seen. 

Previously I had only seen a single camera lock off of a few songs. When I visited Shakey Pictures World Headquarters the other day, I saw what maybe could be the best Crazy Horse film ever made. It was edited by Rachel Simmer with Tim Mulligan’s sound mix mastered by the Volume Dealers’ Niko Bolas.

What struck me was the pace the horse was holding. There was no rush. Unbelievably in a such great pocket I recognized, but had never yet seen on film. The cameras stunning. Great angles. Great moves. Amazing set and and lighting by Keith Wismar. Wonderous editing.

Now that’s just my opinion, but I have seen them all and this one blew me away. Germany 2001.

Premiere coming to our own Hearse Theater exclusively for our members, who deserve to see this first. Thanks for being there.

Rustie grains have sourced the concert to Erfurt Messerhalle, Germany on July 7, 2001. 

From Rusted Moon, the film discovery began over two years ago, when Neil Young was asked in a letter to the editor about the concert being filmed with several cameras. Neil than replied that he would look for it in his archive.

Per Sugar Mountain, the concert in the Erfurt exhibition hall was one of a total of seven shows that Neil Young & Crazy Horse played during the Eurotour 2001 in Germany. It was also the last tour stop where the band was not expanded to include Pegi and Astrid Young as background singers - in other words, only pure "Crazy Horse".
