This weekend, Neil Young solo in concert at Hammersmith Odeon Theater (aka the Carling Apollo), London in 2008 will be showing in the Hearse Theater on NYA. (See full Hearse Theater Schedule.)

The concert film is directed by Tim Pope and the acoustic set premiered in September 2019. Recorded during the final 2 nights (of a 6 gig run) in London, England, in March 2008, the multi-camera film is stunningly intimate and features the "mic cam" for ultra close-ups. (see here for reviews of March 5 & 6, 2008 and March 8 & 9, 2008, March 14 & 15, 2008)

Presumably, the Saturday film focuses on the acoustic portion of set and the Sunday film focuses on the electric portion of the set. Both the acoustic and the electric sets are being presented entirely in the 2 hour and 25 minute concert film now streaming.

The concert film is directed by Tim Pope and has never been screened before. Recorded over a series of 4 nights (see here for reviews of March 5 & 6, 2008 and March 8 & 9, 2008, March 14 & 15, 2008) Recorded during the final 2 nights of a 6 gig run, the multi-camera film is stunningly intimate and features the "mic cam" for ultra close-ups. The film focuses on the acoustic portion of set and does not contain electric cuts. Presumably those will be made available eventually, as well as, the somewhat long lost and beloved Trunk Show film by Jonathan Demme.

Comment of the Moment: London Gig of Neil Young & Crazy Horse

Given the debacle in Dublin -- where everything that could go wrong did -- it's nice to see the tour leg ending in London last night proved a worthy redemption.

As we discussed in coverage of Neil Young & Crazy Horse Dublin, it seems like the odds were not in favor of a successful evening with the poor weather, poor sound, poor horse track venue, lack of stage props, an early curfew shutting down the Cortez encore, among other factors, took its toll on a poor audience heavy with drunken talkers.

But if you're down on a frown, check out this letter a messenger brought me on London: Neil Young & Crazy Horse Concert Reviews - June 17, 2013 by Unknown:

This was the greatest gig I have have ever had the pleasure to experience, bar none.

Despite Neil's claims to the contrary, the band treated us to an extraordinary mind blowing performance. There are not enough adjectives in the English language to describe just how magnificent Neil and the Horse were tonight. The sound acoustics and staging were superb throughout and the set list perfect. Particular highlights were the epic Ramada Inn, a sublime reading of Blowin' In The Wind, the poignant Red Sun, the powerhouse Hey, Hey and the crowd pleasing garage of F@@kin' Up. I never thought it was possible to reach such a transcendental high at a gig.

This was a full two and half hours of brilliance from masters of their craft. Roll on the next one in London in August.

SOLVED: Photo of the Moment - CSNY & Jimmy Page, 1974

This past weekend, we posted a Photo of the Moment of Neil Young, Graham Nash, Stephen Stills & Jimmy Page.

Matt -- a longtime regular TW reader -- had earlier sent it along with a note to us asking if we knew anything about the photo.

It appeared to be from the time of the 1974 stadium tour in a nightclub somewhere. Given Jimmy Page was in the photo, it seemed possibly CSNY concert at Wembley Stadium, London, England, 1974-09-14?

And what's up with Neil playing a Rickenbacker guitar?! No one has ever seen that before???

So we "fan-sourced" the photo and lo & behold within a few hours we had our answer.

Syscrusher commented:

In my book "Neil Young: The Visual Documentary" by John Robertson it says that after the Wembley show, "CSNY attend a party at Quagliino's in Piccadilly, where Young and Stills jam with members of Led Zeppelin and The Band, performing Vampire Blues and On The Beach among other songs."

From John Bonham's site 1974 14 September. John Bonham and Jimmy Page jam with Neil Young at Quaglilino's Restaurant in London after a show at Wembley Stadium featuring Joni Mitchell, C.S.N. & Y and The Band.

This photo was shot by Joseph Stevens and it was first published back in 1978 in Carole Dufrechou book "Neil Young". The book has two editions with some slight differences.

And the date is listed in Ghosts On The Road by Pete Long. It was after the Wembley Gig. It´s a shame that you can´t see it on the photo but that´s John Bonham on drums!

Unfortunatly no tape from that performance is known to exist!

Later that same day the musicians turned up at a post-gig party in Quaglino’s. This most famous of London’s society restaurants had been opened by Giovanni Quaglino in the 1930s. It eventually closed in the 1980s and was subsequently rebuilt in 1993 by Terence Conran on the same location (16 Bury Street, St James’s Place).
