Neil Young Archives Volume #4 Creation Begins
Neil Young has announced on Times-Contrarian | NYA that he has "begun assembly" of NYA Volume #4 by The Volume Dealers.
"Original performances" will be the basis for cut selection. The Bluenotes "10 Men Working" will be an unheard original song on V#4.
Volume #4 will be the "second last" of the series. Back in 2022, Neil had talked of Volume #4 as being the final volume.

I have that Bluenotes poster (unsigned). Got to go to the show at the Coconut Grove (I was cocunut-pilled early!) as I was a student at Uncle Charlie's Summer Camp at the time. My TA let me use his ID to get in, as I was under 21. It was a very surprising show; nobody quite knew what to make of this new 10 piece band playing all new, as yet unreleased songs. When they came out for a second set, they played the same set they'd just finished.
But Vol. 3 ain’t got no T-Bone (it’s from the Vol. 2 era?!) Let’s hear THAT original version.

I really hope Neil doesn’t attempt to cram everything left into Volume 4. It seems that would require omitting so much great material. Not to mention that he’s still actively creating new music. Could this be something his record company is pushing for? I don’t know, but it certainly feels like a herculean task to attempt stuffing that many years into one volume.

I take him calling it "second last" recognition that there should at least be a V. 5.
We clearly can’t know for sure, but I’d read “second last” as indicating vol 5 would be last. I’ve usually heard the expression as “second to last”, but I don’t want to get pedantic on grammar.
On an unrelated note, this year is not just the 50th anniversary of OtB. It’s 30 years since Sleeps with Angels came out. Both album seem timeless. Even with its grunge and noise rock (or noise post-rock?) influence, SWA is not dated to the ‘90–not unless Mother Nature is still stuck “on the run in the 1970s”.
It seems that if one assumes that there will be a volume 5 ( which I hope there will be) then it will be a welcome addition to the collection. But because Neil still seems like he has plenty more creativity left in him, I would argue that a volume 6 isn’t necessarily out of the question.
After reading his comment on the Times Contrarian, it appears that he’s even excited about the material that they’re now working on. With Neil Young one needs to avoid expectations, and take things one day at a time.

To the Bluenotes tunes Neil talks about in his latest Vol. IV update, perhaps we can add some Harvest Moon material. There is a new memorial story on Tim Drummond where Neil mentions the bassist’s groove on Old King 9/3/91. This take is not yet filed into our trusty cabinet!
Very much enjoying all the Vol. 3 and Vol. 4 chat. Just wanted to point out that there is a good article on Vol. 3 in the online magazine on the Qobuz app.

1977 is collected in disc 4: Snapshot in Time. It captured Young sitting, guitar in hand, before his loyal producer David Briggs and Nicolette Larson at Linda Ronstadt’s house in Malibu, putting their heads together to compose American Stars ‘N Bars. The album even included “Barefoot Floors,” a ballad recorded on cassette that he’d play to a jubilant Ronstadt in his passenger seat.
Maybe there will be a Volume IVa and Volume IVb 😁 followed by Volume V.
