A Tribute & Appreciation for David Crosby: 1941 - 2023
The tributes and appreciation for David Crosby, who passed on Thursday at age 81, continue to flow in from around the EARTH.
From the Washington Post's APPRECIATION: The Contrasts of David Crosby by Chris Richards:
As an irritable bon vivant who mainlined jazz and cocaine to sing lullabies like a cherub in a Tiepolo painting, David Crosby made no sense. He sang supremely delicate harmonies while living a reckless life, his hedonism, skepticism, tenderness and arrogance eventually coalescing into a shoulder shrug of self awareness. On the first page of his 1988 memoir, Crosby wrote, "I know I have an ego -- opinions differ as to its health, size, and value."
A lovely voice and a lovely human being. Sincerest thanks to David Crosby for his kindness and for singing so beautifully to us all. -The Avett Brothers
Brian Jones and David Crosby, Monterey Pop Festival , 1967
Bob Dylan on David Crosby: "Crosby was a colorful and unpredictable character, wore a Mandrake the Magician cape, didn’t get along with too many people and had a beautiful voice — an architect of harmony. He could freak out a whole city block all by himself. I liked him a lot."
Melissa Etheridge remembers David Crosby: "I am grieving the loss of my friend and Bailey’s biological father, David. He gave me the gift of family ... His music and legacy will inspire many generations to come. A true treasure."
On sept 12,2001 David Crosby offered me a ride on his tour bus from Denver to LA after the attacks on 911. Such a generous and kind soul. Swift auspicious rebirth to you brother.

Finally, here is a fan's heartfelt tribute to David Crosby.
Thanks Davy. We do understand and get it. And so do lots of others. We grieve together over the loss and celebrate the music...because music is love

The outpouring of grief and celebration over Crosby's passing is both surprising and pleasing.
2 quick points here. 1st, it seems that Neil has been written out of Crosby obits to a degree. For example, the above appreciation from WaPo completely omits the fact that Neil did in fact perform at Woodstock w/ CSN as CSNY.
All of which makes Neil's statement all the more poignant.
Lastly, please try and watch Davy's heartfelt grief over learning of David's passing. We received the video within moments of the official news of Crosby's passing. It is this in the moment passion which brings us all together in music and love.
thanks Davy.
A contradictory life of truth, imbalance and naked storytelling. Neil is right in that it was really he, not Neil, who was the glue keeping the foursome together. Maybe David was the amalgam of all the others put together...as quirky as Dylan, as fiery as Lennon, as piercing as Miles and as constant as Willie. He was blues, jazz, rock, folk and pure Croz shaken and definitely not stirred into a Molotov-esque cocktail of daring, impossibility and breaking despair. He never had to say black lives matter, or love is love, because he celebrated the broken and forlorn with his catfish grin and Rasputin stare. We did not wonder why he did not cut his hair.
Like so many, my life in song has almost never sung without him. Our friend Davy wept sincere tears, Beatles bowed their heads, a truly great President acknowledged his live and his passing.
I feel...like I owe it...to someone. I always did. Maybe we didn't realize it was always you, David.
"Wind blowing through my sails
It feels like I'm gone
Leaving with the wind blowing
Through my sails"---Neil Young
Thanks much for comment here tony@wbkm.
Definitely a contradictory, paradoxical life.
Davy's tears were a tribute to the impact of the music. As we would sign off on our podcasts, we feel like we owe it to someone. Someone like Croz.
it is our journey. Our self appointed task. we continue.
onward thru the haze
Wonderful tributes all around, of course leave it to Mr Zimmerman to say it best.
I pondered the day when the hope for a CSNY reunion tour would be gone. Now with the passing of David Crosby, I will relish the memories of the times I got to see them and meet them evermore.
