Details on Uncut Magazine Neil Young Cover - February 2023
The February 2023 issue of Uncut Magazine features Neil Young on the cover.
The issue has an interview with Neil about his 2022 -- Barn, Toast, World Record, the Harvest film documentary, along with a look ahead to 2023.
So what would Nils Lofgren of Crazy Horse like to see released in Neil Young’s Archive Series? Outtakes of Trans recorded in Hawaii, he tells Mojo magazine. (Thanks Harrison!) Maybe “Johnny’s Island”, as Neil has alluded? (thanks John H!)
Also, Neil Young says:
“I got a lot of stuff to clean up.
I’ve got a big mess that I left behind. I’ve created a lot of unfinished records, unfinished this and that. I now have the time to deal with it, focus on it.
But at the same time, anything new takes precedent—always. Once I start thinking about something new, I drop the old stuff right away and do the new thing.”
Producer Rick Rubin, who also worked on World Record and portions of Toast, said that Young isn’t the most conventional record maker.
“Time doesn’t move at traditional speed where Neil is involved,” said Rubin. “Some things seem to come out impossibly quickly. Other times, they live in obscurity for years until the inclination to release something appeals to Neil.”

Warning: Off Topic.
Neil has just posted on The Times Contrarian (front page 12/13/22) that they are working with Reprise on addressing the sound distortion of the BBC DVD. His note gives the impression that “some” fans have had problems with the sound quality, but I haven’t read anyone saying there’s was fine. But I’m glad to know that a replacement copy is at least in the works. Thanks Neil.
Peace 🙏
Thanks, Dan. Have been enjoying Harvest 50 but the BBC DVD sound is distracting and strange. Distortion seems to be mostly on vocal frequencies, so at first it seems like it’s fine. It’s a pity, since it’s a great set list and a fascinating piece of music/TV history.
The BBC CD (didn’t splurge for vinyl, I really don’t have the playback equipment to justify the investment) is the best part of the set, along with Harvest Time. Plenty of great footage of the Gators jamming in the barn, CSN+Y harmonizing. The film meanders a little and arguably loses some momentum in the last half, after the LSO.
I agree Meta Rocker, the Harvest Time film and BBC are the real gems in the set. As much as I wanted the vinyl set, the price was just too high for only the BBC on vinyl, especially since I already own Harvest included in the first Original Series Box Set. So I opted for the CD set as well. Great stuff indeed, but I definitely want the DVD to be replaced.
Peace 🙏
I never bought any version of the ATGR 50th anniversary edition. I remember listening to and enjoying the vibes outtake of Wonderin’, but wasn’t about to invest in a whole set that didn’t offer much new. Harvest 50 has some meaty new content that justifies the purchase.
However, I applaud Neil’s stance that new work takes first priority. It has meant that we’ve waited longer, and still wait, for Archives-related things, but I think it’s an important artistic commitment. This is what keeps the “wheat” fresh.
kool-aid, kool-aid tastes great
let’s go get some
can’t wait
