VIEWPOINT: President Of The World
Over the years, Neil Young has been hosting various viewpoints on Times-Contrarian | NYA. The following VIEWPOINT was submitted by Adam Rauch via The Line. VIEWPOINT opinions published here on Thrasher's Wheat do not necessarily imply endorsement. You know the drill ... Think for Yourself, Question Authority, Make Up Your Own Mind.
President Of The World
via The Line
By Adam Rauch
Feb 28
In
December, Neil Young was a guest on the Howard Stern Show. In one of
their discussions behind the meaning of his new song ‘Lookin' for a
Leader 2020’, Neil proclaimed something to the effect of ‘we don’t need a
President of the United States, but rather a President Of The World.’
That really resonated with me.
After watching what is going
on in Russia and Ukraine with all that devastation, I truly believe that
we DO need a President Of The World to lead a path for all of humanity.
The examples set by that leader would HAVE TO resonate across all
cultures, races, genders, orientations and backgrounds to eradicate the
archaic way we have become separated from each other as humans across
continents, in communities, towns and homes alike.
This President Of The World would first have to try to
eradicate misguided ANGER. That would be the first step. Whether that be
with mindful mediation or yoga or some form of positive energy release,
we need to expunge all that ANGER from people across the globe.
The
weird thing about ANGER is that it if people took a moment to really
sit with it, they would likely discover they aren’t angry at the thing
they are taking it out on. You remember the time you screamed at the
person who cut you off on the highway or at your kid when they were
overly needy? It isn’t about them. It is about us! The job we hate
doing or the life circumstances that we find ourselves in.
For
all those school board meetings that end in shouting fights about mask
mandates. It isn’t really about the masks people are screaming about.
The mask is just an avenue for all that ANGER and frustration to
manifest.
I know it may sound Pollyanna to say Why Can’t We
All Just Get Along? But honestly, Why Can’t We All Just Get Along? As I
write this, people are getting their lives ruined in Ukraine for
disputes over imaginary lines set by people hundreds of years ago - who
mind you no one on this Earth has never met before. If we lived forever,
I would understand a little more, but we don’t. And if we keep up this
pace, we will destroy the entire planet just to say an imaginary line
belongs on our side instead of yours.
That is why we need
a President Of The World. Someone who talks the talks and walks the
walk. Someone who isn’t getting kickbacks behind-the-scenes while
publicly fighting against corporate greed. Not someone who is fighting
for women’s rights, all while being a #metoo predator behind closed
doors.
We need a real leader to show people how to deal
with ANGER and GET ALONG. So let’s nominate a President Of The World to
get things started in a better direction. Life would be so much better
if we didn’t fight all the time.
Who would you nominate if you could?

So, folks. "Who would you nominate if you could?"

ok, we'll go 1st ... Willie Nelson.
Why? Same reason as Willie Nelson for Nobel Peace Prize. For Willie's Farm Aid work and his work on alternative fuels, and world peace initiatives.
Nobel Peace Prize for Willie Nelson for Farm Aid
Willie for a Nobel!
#Willie4Nobel
This campaign has been running for over 10 years now. Since 2010.
Frankly, we're so disgusted with The Nobel Cmte that we're ready to pull the whole effort. If The Nobel Cmte can not support someone of the caliber and stature of Willie Nelson for what the Man has done, the Nobel prize means nothing to us. Some of the folks who have been selected over the years are an utter disgrace to humanity.
But we know Willie doesn't really care about this sort of recognition. And we're tired of providing a platform to the Nobel Peace Cmte, as WW3 begins to ramp up. Clearly, the Nobel Peace prize has failed to achieve even minimal objectives and needs to be scrapped.
Thanks again Adam for submitting essay.
peace
I will go second and please excuse me for total honesty. I cannot think of a worse idea. I am trying but it is hard.
Thanks Abner.
Bear with us here a few moments. We'll try and be as transparent as possible on this.
We were very on the fence about this VIEWPOINT. Again, we'll get to that later if merited.
1st, totally get it that Willie isn't considered "serious". But do you call some of the other World Leaders, Past and Present serious? That's about of the point here that Willie wouldn't really be that different than some the other World Actors on stage.
But there are larger questions afoot that will need to wait as we see how this plays out.
Adam made quite a sincere effort to have us publish this assuming we we would say Neil presumably. So sorry to disappoint you Adam.
Also, this has been published elsewhere and we've been trying to find out what the reaction was elsewhere on the question.
We will come back at some point and make a full disclosure on this.
ps - also, Willie is a lot older now than when we started this. So from a practical standpoint, Willie for anything is a non-starter. But hey someone had to get the ball rolling.
so other than Willie not being your 1st pick, any suggestions Abner?
ps#2 - we did challenge the author to post here and/or share whatever he was hearing.
but due to some publishing challenges, we had a small mixup. hence our 1st shot. while a bit premature w/ less thought than subject warranted, we'll let stand. again, we will have more to say depending on where this goes ... if it goes anywhere ... just trying not to be a spoiler on what appears to be a sincere attempt.
The World recently had a great President. He was there from 2016-20, and God willing, he will be back in charge in 2024.
In case you're not sure who I'm talking about, his initials are Donald J. Trump.....
Thanks Richie.
@ Adam - ok we're up to a grand total of 2 nominations. We eagerly await your submission.
Difficult times appear to seduce people to believe in a charismatic saviour-like figure. European history is full of them guys. Their names: Napoleon Bonaparte, Peter the Great, Wilhelm II.; AH, J.W. Stalin...
No thanks, we've been there before and we currently can see that Gaspution as another High potential trying to hold my world hostage with certain absolute power or capability.
I had basically the same response Dionys. When I first heard the title "President of the World" I started thinking someone would have to say Trump. God knows, he has the wisdom and insight into world affairs to run the whole show? Only a dangerous and foolish sociopath would ever consider the "role."
This could be a grade B dystopian movie. Christopher Walken could play Trump.
No offense meant to the author of the article. It actually raises some good and frightening questions.
Of course I expect to take some heat for saying Trump, no surprise there. It would be interesting to see who those that criticize my selection would choose as their selection, but apparently criticism is all some people have. No solutions or choices of their own, just criticism of those that offer up their thoughts.
Orange Man Bad is as easy as picking low hanging fruit, but I don't remember any military conflicts like we're seeing now happening during his watch. I don't remember paying almost $6 a gallon to pump my gas during his watch. I don't remember my grocery bill doubling in price during his watch. I don't remember the US needing to beg for oil from places like Venezuela and Iran during his watch. And that's just a few of the things that I could bring up.
Look, I didn't vote for Trump in 2016, but I do have this instrument called an open mind. And I watched what went on from 2016-20, and I'm seeing what's happening since, and honestly, anyone who thinks the world is in better shape now is either a liar or a pretty delusional human being.
Yes, World War III isn't too far off the horizon, but at least we don't have to deal with mean tweets, right?
God forbid us all if Trump ever is President again. He is easily the worse human being I have ever known about-and as a clergy person in a large city, I know a huge number of people. The toxic stew of awful qualities in this one person is mind blowing. I suppose the first time he was elected could be written off as some people thinking, “why not, worth a try,” but now we have witnessed the horrible reality of a Trump presidency and we should never ever repeat that mistake. Such a divisive, selfish, hateful, vengeful, amoral, bigoted, egotistical man. Please reconsider your support for him.
A few people mentioned Bill Gates or The Rock. Perhaps a non-American also just so we can keep a global view of the planet. Or perhaps finally a woman can run things?
I'm not giving "my pick" Richie because, as I said, it is a really bad idea. No human being can be president of the world. Dionys chose some ripe historical examples of this bad idea. From a more abstract standpoint, we are grossly limited beings, not capable of the sort of self-control and self-knowledge necessary for such power- so no pick.
I won't bother responding to the inflation/gas point, as everyone knows that such economic troubles are never simply caused by a president. President bruised orange brain (thanks John Prine) was an objectively bad president on every reasonable criteria. Most especially he failed to lead and became a debit on humanity. It was good to see the the rioter get convicted today on all counts, enjoy prison pal. And, by the way, Trump is heading in that direction himself. Bruised orange head might end up in jail. sweet and fitting, dulce et decorum est..
Meanwhile the white supremacist sycophant, and repulsive waste of carbon, Marjorie Taylor Greene joins up with extremists and then denies she knew it. All Trump lovers are incapable of rational criticism of "their leader." Gee, I wonder why? What a fascinatingly deep question.... anyone with orange hair that looks like it came out of a cheese whiz can is not suitable for leading, too many aesthetic standards are at risk.
Rabbi Randy, don't hold back!
So he was a bad President because "he failed to lead, and became a debit on humanity", whatever that means.
Is there actually anything specific that you might want to mention? How about how things are going now? Anything specific that you might want to mention as being better now than it was under Trump, anything at all?
And I know that gas prices were at least $3 lower when the US was pumping oil right here in this country when Trump was in office. The first day Biden took over, he immediately ended most of the production that Trump initiated, and gas prices started rising immediately, well before Putin started his war on Ukraine. So tell me again how a President has no effect on gas prices?
he wasted four years on infrastructure, he did NOTHING. I guess making America great again does not really count in relation to ACTUAL infrastructure....
He had no foreign policy, he kissed Putin's ass, that really helped
He systematically dismantled the EPA, which will have consequences that no one can even right now imagine
He alienated allies all over the world
He marginalized already marginalized groups, creating enormous social discord, the worst since the civil rights riots
Oh, I forgot, he nearly sabotaged democracy because he could not deal with losing
He appointed an endless number of buffoons and fools, including the fool who was secretary of education, whatever her name was, she "focused" on charter schools and so on, totally ignoring public education, which was already in crisis
He fueled the pandemic with endlessly stupid comments, like maybe we should gargle with drain cleaner
as advisors he had his idiot family with no qualifications
Interesting how the very purpose regarding this proposition leads to the human frailty of anger. In my opinion Trump was US president in a different time. There were warnings even in his tenure about the stability of Putin. Trump must be dismissed as a candidate as he insights too much friction.
We humans need someone with a balanced and fair view of the world; not just their back-yard. Forget about powerful individuals we need someone with a rational temperament and just, sane outlook that is far-reaching and global. Now who could that be. Probably someone you've never heard of.
If the President of the World were a woman there would be less - no ? - violence in the world.
Maybe the next leaders of all countries should be women; and then see the changes for the better.
As for Willie or Trump - no thank you
Julia, wishful thinking.
@ Dionys - agree. Gasputin. Very clever
@ Abner - also agree. exactly. Selecting/Anointing a World President is the opposite of what is needed.
As folks who have followed this blog over the decades have seen our own Big Shift in awareness on the folly of looking for a leader. Because, "We're The Ones
We've Been Waiting For".
The Left/Right paradigms are a trap -- a divide and conquer tactic where the people always lose. The actual divide is not Left/Right but UP/DOWN, i.e. elite vs everyone else. Always has.
Furthermore, a geopolitical level, it is now the Globalists vs Nationalists. That's the frame up for setting stage for final push on WW3.
No one is going to save us except ourselves.
#WT1sWBW4
@ RR - so, aside from that, anyone you consider worthy? Or is this even a good idea to begin with?
@ Kameeo - we assume this is author Adam?
Thanks for posting. Hmmm, Bill Gates or The Rock. why?
again, thanks for pushing us on publishing this Viewpoint. It is an interesting debate.
Furthermore, we have always heard that no one listens or cares what celebrities think about world affairs. Your essay is a perfect example of a celebrity comment leading to action.
thanks again
@ Ozzy - is it realistic to think that such a human exists? The U.S. Constitution was designed in such a way that no one single individual could ever grab all the reins of power because the Founders knew that mankind is deeply flawed as a whole and that the only way to protect liberties was to imbue them into the fabric of the nation.
We're very caught up in personalties, celebrities, etc.
are we guilty of some celebrity worship here @ TW? absolutely. but. we didn't nominate neil but willie instead.
so back to our disclosure on this exercise. We didn't want to blow out the whole essay out of the gates saying this is a bad idea to begin with. we did want to hear what folks had to say 1st.
@ Julia - maybe so. any suggestions?
And, would you agree that if Willie were the PotW now, would we even be discussing WW3?
Sorry, but I think the worst idea of all, would be a President of the World. To leacve the power and responisibility to one person, would be fatal. That's dictatorship, and extremely dangerous. The main problem of the world today, are all the guys wanting to be presidents or leaders of "great" nations, other nations, many nations, and the world. Putin, Erdogan, Xi, Trump, just to mention a few. Just like Hitler or Stalin once wanted. What the world need, are many nations, small nations, democratic nations where people have power and can replace the president or prime minister in free elections. Nations with "strong" presidents with much power will never be truly democratic, and the "strong man" will always, in the end abuse his power.

Abolish the presidency.
I may add a bit of conventional wisdom: Margaret Thatcher, Katharina the Great, Elizabeth I. and her opponent Maria Stuart, Indira Gandhi and Golda Meir not to forget Lucrezia Borgia of course, would have made real good world presidents, had they not fallen victim to male manipulation and conspiracy. Aside from that, I suggest to read Galadriel's response to Frodo if that's not too trivial a source for the learned reader.
Angie M. had been an outstanding political leader in her time, with many accomplishments and merits, but I am really glad at this time we don't have to rely on her virtues, which were very welcome under different circumstances.
I believe it's rather more rewarding to think about the qualifications of a human being within an institutional framework who temporarily could be an arbiter, or a referee in case of conflict. But then: when ever did the United States (or any of the other veto powers) submit itself to let's say a majority votum of the United Nations' GA?
Another concept also comes to mind: Within the Iroqouis Confederacy the women selected the sachems and war chiefs. So the reponsibility was shared evenly. If the women had selected the chief who would send their children to war, they could not come along afterwards and complain about male misuse of power. Needless to say that the Iroquois were known to be the most peaceful, gentle and friendly throat-cuts of indigenous North America. And frankly after witnessing the events around Oka in 1990 first-hand and from the inside, admiringly I believe they still are. Sorry for the disgression.
Nominate for World President:
Gort
From 1950's SciFi movie -
The Day the Earth Stood Still
Klaatu barada nikto.
Yes Neil, your Antichrist will soon be revealed! He will lead this world! Into total chaos.
Ol Neil Anti Christ ? Huh. Rather ambitious for a old stoned hippie. But, nothing stranger has happened. Good points all Lil Abner. You barely scratched the outer layer of deceit. The damn fool never could do a thing right but garner support from those he hates and looks down on. If you dont believe me he can be quoted saying the same . Remember when he said they have to stop more voters or Republicans will never win again. Like someone else famous he mixes lies and truth. DJ is the real Teflon Don. Its even right in the name this time
"Lil Abner"?
I did not target the layers of deceit. I targeted the actual policy failures of an administration and you are still right: I only scratched the surface.
How can there be policy failures when there are no policies?
If anyone wants to bury Trump in the facts of his own existence, see:
David Cay Johnston, The Big Cheat
This is a book and it currently flies under the radar. This gets to the layers of deceit.
