Neil Young: Noise + Flowers
Amsterdam on July 9, 2016

The proof is now in for all to hear: it was -- without a shred of doubt -- an "epic night in Amsterdam", as we described back in 2016 as reports rolled in here in real time at TW.

From post NEW TIMELINE CONCERT: Neil Young + POTR - "EPIC NIGHT IN AMSTERDAM!" | NYA, the Comment of the Moment is by Minke:

Amazing show.

Many surprise songs. So many highlights. Razor Love is beautiful. Winterlong fits them like a glove, as do Alabama, Western Hero and a scourging Revolution Blues.

The band was in an elated mood that night. Dutch herbs perhaps.

From note one of Out on the Weekend you hear the glee (this song doesn’t get the best performance though). The concert shows why Neil Young liked to play with these guys. The songs sound fresh and light. Don’t go there searching for the Crazy Horse stomp.

What surprised me most was the sparkling funkiness of their playing. Especially Love to Burn (at 1:12:15) and Love and Only Love (at 2:42:50) get such funky treatments; although 18 and 20+ minutes long it felt like they could go on forever. Pure bliss and with Revolution Blues the absolute pinnacles of the concert.

Moments where Lukas and Micah Nelson’s playing really added a new flavour to the songs and turned them into something completely different from the original Crazy Horse setup. The band continued to bestow song after song on the audience.

Check out the great videos of the concert made by Rialto1961 on YT. Watch Micah Nelson. What was he doing there noodling all the time? But it worked. As do the bongos.

Greetings to all!

Thanks for comment Minke!  Definitely a night for the ages.  So was it the Amsterdam herbs?  Or was there more to the picture than meets the eye?

In going back to TW posts around this date (See:

it would seem that the night had magic in the air.  It was a Saturday night. If you look at  Sugar Mountain's Chronological Grid (Thanks Tom on SM!), you can see the band had the night off before (traveling from Norway on July 7) and had the next 2 days off before going onto Montreux, Switzerland on July 12.  So they had love to burn in more ways than one.

Absolutely marvellous this concert.Could have been there, but I was in a terrible state.I got the tickets from my niece, but I couldn't go to a place with so many people and noise. My older brother and his wife (same age as me) were the lucky ones, for they went instead of me,as I gave them my tickets. They bought me a present,a T-shirt with Neil on it,black, with an image of Neil during his Continental Tour in 2008,which I attended with my girl Els in the open air in Weert, the Netherlands.Soaking wet,but in great spirits.I'm happy I now had the chance to listen on NYA to the whole concert and I'm proud it was the longest one in my country at Amsterdam, capital city of the Netherlands.Don't think I'll ever get the opportunity to see Neil live in concert, but I keep hearing and reading on his Archives-site.It's a miracle:Young forever...keeps me forever young.Cees Mostert & Els Jochems,Roosendaal,Holland,Europe.

Yep, listened to the whole thing over the weekend! The encore was definitely the highlight. Like An Inca hadn’t been played since the Trans Band did it in 1982, and Promise of the Real made it their own while remaining true to the studio version. Here We Are In The Years, known as a show opener back in the olden days, works even better as a farewell tune to cap off an epic show like this one at the Ziggo Dome.

It’s been relatively quiet around here and on NYA the past few days. Vol 3 release date announcement coming soon…?

I’ve been super busy lately with work and buying a new stereo amplifier and a new CD recorder, so I only had time to hear the first five songs. What I heard, I could tell that Neil was in the zone and relaxed. Can’t wait for the weekend.

Peace 🙏

We’ve all met our posting quota on TW the last few weeks and now that the kerfuffle has settled somewhat, the hubbub simmered, it’s a fine moment for a breather. The focus on work never ends, although it can enjoy a pause in the summertime. Based on benchmark scores, I’m under no illusion with my Texas high school students that I’m actually learnin’ em good. But there’s a teacher shortage, so I’m secure in the knowledge that I’m the best they’ve got!

Other than posting THE LONGEST CONCERT IN NEIL YOUNG HISTORY, things have been quiet at the Archives site. I did notice that the Computer Cowboy video is coming down the pike, returning to Hearse Theater on Thursday. Will the full Trans movie be released before Vol 3 lands? Or will it arrive in advance of that behemoth set? Any projections what the price tag will look like on that Blu-Ray? Now that my tax refund’s been calculated… I’m wonderin’.
