PREMIERE NOW PLAYING: Full Concert of Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Buffalo, 1991

"LIKE A HURRICANE" (encore) by Neil Young & Crazy Horse
Memorial Auditorium, Buffalo, New York - 1991-02-16

frame via Hearse Theater | NYA

Just recently, Neil Young announced a new "Weld Series" planned for Neil Young Archives and the full concert of Neil Young & Crazy Horse in Buffalo, 1991 is now premiering on Hearse Theater | NYA

Earlier, the Hearse Theater | NYA featured Buffalo's "LIKE A HURRICANE" 12+ minute encore and considered to be "Mind Blowing" -- even by Neil himself. This is part of the encore from the CRAZY HORSE - BUFFALO WAR MEMORIAL film, coming Sunday in its entirety to NYA. Be sure to watch last few seconds of video for a very special treat for those with eyes open to see. HINT: It shows the calm in the eye after the storm and will break every rusties heart.

Two recordings from Buffalo concert are on the live album "WELD" -- the "stunning towering majesty" of an electric Bob Dylan cover of "Blowin 'In The Wind" and the "Mind Blowing" encore of "Like A Hurricane".

Rolling Stone's Andy Greene writes: "It’s Young at his Godfather of Grunge prime and a great gift for fans stuck in their homes."

The following comment was posted by the ever so faithful and fearless Scotsman:
The long-awaited video of Like A Hurricane from Weld is now streaming on NYA.

One of the greatest Crazy Horse live performances ever (admittedly there are a fair few others, maybe several thousand).

If (for some strange reason) I had to pick just one officially released Crazy Horse track, this would be it.

It really is an incredible performance that just builds up to an outrageous level of intensity. Set aside 13 minutes this evening and watch it; then set aside an hour to get your breath back.

The complete Buffalo 1991 show is set for its premiere on Sunday. Stay home and enjoy it.

Scotsman.

As mentioned, the 1st release from the "Weld Series" will be from Memorial Auditorium, Buffalo, New York, on 1991-02-16. A preview clip was posted recently on NYA of "Campaigner" from Buffalo which indicates that this will be a performance oriented release concert as opposed to the original WELD release which contained vast amounts of audience reaction. Apparently, Manager Elliot Roberts was quite opposed to the WELD editing that favored audience over band. Neil seems to be correcting this decision by saying: "Well Elliot, you got it. Better late than never my old friend."

The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind,
The answer is blowin' in the wind."

I just finished watching it. much more enjoyable to see the band playing instead of the audience. great performance. I saw the Miami show a bit later in this tour. wonder if that will be included in the series? the audience boot video from Miami is decent but not this quality. Buffalo tech issues: I noticed 3 audio problems: 1st was near the start of 'Love To Burn' which had an insert on the video, 2nd - near the end of 'Rockin' In The Free World' - a splice and drop in volume for a couple sec, 3rd - another splice and real short total volume drop near the end of 'Hurricane'. otherwise I noticed a flanger type sound effect that seemed to be on almost the entire show? anyone else notice these things? hope that all gets fixed later for the DVD.

This being a rough cut of the concert, it actually is very watchable. Yes the sound is quite cavernous throughout and there are some minor dropouts, but Neil has said that this is a raw product as it is right now. He also suggests that perhaps it should be left this way, in its ragged form. Maybe so, but I’m sure more work will be done before it gets a official release.

As for the performance, it just doesn’t get much better than this. These guys were on fire throughout the show, and it seems to me that it’s a entire set of highlights. Not a bad performance throughout. Crime In The City, Blowing In The Wind, Love To Burn, F&@kin’ Up, Cortez The Killer, Powderfinger, Love And Only Love, Campaigner, Keep On Rocking In The Free World, and Like A Hurricane are all outstanding. And in this case that is an understatement. Arguably one of the best shows from one of their best tours.

Anyone who watches this and isn’t moved by it should seek out medical attention immediately. Live music just doesn’t get any more intense than this. Wow!!

Peace 🙏

Acidfrank: I think the most likely scenario is that something went wrong with the encoding of the audio.

I have a SBD tape of this show (of unknown provenance) that doesn't have most of these issues, including the annoying out-of-phase sound (the biggest problem here, most likely just an encoding error as it only affects certain songs) and possibly not even the Love To Burn drop-out.

Eagle-ears will have noticed that Poncho's guitar is entirely inaudible for the first half hour as well (the mix gets an extra dose of Horsepower part way through Love To Burn). Unfortunately this is a problem inherent to the raw recording (including the copy I have) and therefore can't be fixed, but the good news is that there is a separate multi-track recording of this show in the Archives. Neil's crew can't access it at the moment, but it's a problem that might well be quite simple to fix when they can.

Sound issues aside? It's a awesome document of one of Neil's greatest tours. Cortez and Hurricane? You aren't going to hear any better versions than these monsters. And that is a bold statement.

I'm so glad he chose to put these versions out there in this chaotic world. They are more than strong enough to fend for themselves.

I'll be in touch with NYA about the few sound issues to see if they want to do an upgraded version, or wait until they can finally get the alternate multi-track version back out of the vault!

Great credit to Neil and his team who are doing a fantastic job.

The bottom line is that it is vastly preferable to put these superb rough-around-the-edges recordings into the world (where they can actually make some waves) than it is to keep them locked away for another few decades because the sound quality isn't perfect enough.

This Buffalo video of Like A Hurricane is one of the greatest Neil Young films ever. And in 1991, it was obviously considered special enough to include on the official Weld CD.

So why wasn't it also included on the original release of the Weld video?

I can only guess because it would have taken up a lot of the limited running time. Or maybe the moody dimmed lighting for this song was a bit dark for home viewing (despite being brilliantly atmospheric).

Or maybe it was just too intense for Neil to put out there. Maybe it just got overlooked. I don't know.

But whatever the reason, it was enough to keep this breath-taking, powerful video locked away for nearly 30 years.

Well, Neil now has a perfect place to put all these raw gems that got overlooked until now. Great respect to him for starting to put them out there, even if a very understandable tendency would be to shelve them because there are a few flaws.

(And the only really pervasive issue with the Buffalo film, the swooshing and distant sound on a few tracks, might well be a unintentional and minor production error that will be pretty simple to fix if the desire is there to do so, even in the short term: stay tuned on this).

In the meantime, I hope they'll begin to put out the other gigs from 1991, as well. The films of Maryland, Pittsburgh and LA all have some truly brilliant performances, as do the others from this tour.

Yes, the setlists are all very similar. I think that sometimes, and up to a point, repetition is a good thing: it leads to more focus and more intensity. And often, people don't start to pay attention until you've repeated yourself a few times.

More to the point, this music is simply too great to keep locked away for another 30 years.

Scotsman.

Rod (on the Red Deer) has left a new comment on your post "NOW PLAYING: A "Blistering" Version of "Crime in T...":

I saw this series of 1991 concerts (best I've ever seen, and I've seen NY, 9 times ) with CH in the Fall of 1991 in Calgary, just as the US was marshalling up the troops to go into Irac.

He opened with an absolutely blistering Jimi Hendrix's Star Spangled Banner with the Stars and Stripes behind him. My friend Joe from Cape Breton happened to hit it right as he just heading up North to go pipelining. We missed a bit of Sonic Youth -- certainly did not miss hearing them as we snagged a couple of beers in my case, 6 in this case. We lost each other in the rukus were very relieved to find each other again. We just danced with our arms around each other on the Aluminum Stairs of the Saddle Dome and never sat down the entire concert -- next to our seats. What a concert! Guitar strings were shredded, waving in the breeze, the roadie who ever it was would just bring him out a new guitar after he used the shredded strings for a little feedback, ala Jimi Page but without the wand.

Never have I seen such intensity. I am really looking forward to the Buffalo show.

Did he open with Star Spangled Banner in Buffalo or was that too far away from the Irac War?

It's hard to add anything in articulate way, after everyone else has already hit the nail on the head.. but here it goes.

What a powerful show. Neil has said that he transitioned into his Harvest Moon phase because this tour burned him out, and it's easy to see why. Even just witnessing this one show, it's exhausting (in the best sense of the word).

I didn't personally see any of these shows live (I really wish I was able to), but one wonders what the audience thought. It's a punishing assault (again, in the best sense of the word) for two solid hours. The stage lights are so low, that you can barely see the band, which transfers wonderfully to this video. Yeah, there some shoddy audio/visual moments, but they only add the beauty. Neil could put this out on DVD tomorrow, with no further technical corrections and we'd all scoop it up. It's such a wonderful spit in the face to the pyrotechnics and staged choreography to other bands of the late 80s and early 90s era. Billy straight up knocks his mic over during Welfare Mothers. You can't manufacture that kind of beauty or moment, it just happens. And the fog during Blowin In the Wind, just hits home that much harder.

Scotzman is right on with this version of Hurricane. It was always stunning on Weld, and to witness it, man, the images I've had in my mind don't come close to what was captured here. Neil's moving around with such speed and intensity, that it's like something in a Buster Keaton movie where the image is sped up.

It's fantastic that all this Ragged Glory material is coming out now, I can't wait for the Rust Bucket release. Keep the Horse comin! This is a wonderful era!

Also- again- many have pointed it out, but Uncle Eddie must've really really had a poignant impact on Neil. Really nice to see how he took it to heart, and won't forget about him (and agreed, the credits were an awesome touch). Really shows that NYA was built for the fans. I hope you and your family are safe and well Uncle Eddie, you've opened the floodgates for the rest of us, and it's wonderful.

Take care out there and Be The Rain.
