Cerys where's your hat? What a bland interview - what was that about a friend of hers busking and Neil stopped to talk to her - really? If true what's the relevance? Neil manages to mention Pono and peddling we're only getting to hear 5% of what was originally recorded -are any of us still listening to this twaddle?

The J J Cale question was awful - he appeared on Comes A Time......

I love Neil but there comes a time when someone has to say to Neil give it a rest.

I think it's a pretty cool interview and NY has a point about the sound. I listen to mp3's all day but when I come home and put on vinyl I swear it really does create more of a feeling. I have no idea if pono would do it or not but for people to constantly tell him to stop advertising his company is a little rude and tiresome. I think this is the first I've heard of the 'android singers'. Have I missed a few posts or what? I hope this album is good.

So Andy. Bland? If you were the interviewer, what would you have asked to spice it up? Or what if you were Neil ( what would you have said?

You are one negative individual.Yes we are listening to this "twaddle" because it is TRUE.If you don't get the relevance of Neil meeting this woman's friend in Nashville ( he supports struggling or up and coming musicians, HELLO !!! ) and he didn't ONLY pitch PONO, he even said not just my product but any high resolution listening system...you're clueless.

Sorry if I've offended any one here which does seem to be pretty easy. There's so much to ask Neil about his recent resurgent live performances, we'll park his recent albums. I'd love to ask in a BBC interview a few years ago you said...'I follow my muse I never know where it's going to take me, but people will get hurt if they understand me then fine'...would you say that now includes Pegi, Crazy Horse, Stills, Crosby? You seem to have moved on a lot in the last few years what brought that about?

You played London a few years ago with CH and it did seem you were bored with the whole set list especially the extended solos... this time you've played some gems why the dramatic change?

Do you really believe that most of your fans 50+ can hear the difference with the Pono sound? Have you ever tested yourself surely playing for all these years has had an impact on your hearing?

Are you in touch with Joni? Did you ever make up with Geffen?

I'm clueless but this would make for a more probing chat than this drivel.

Comments made by Andy at this site are very mild compared to RS or Twitter. This is a great site because everyone has always had great insight about NY. I respect every comment I've ever read here because these are REAL fans. Can't wait for EARTH.

Andy is a friendly troll, one who knows a good bit about Neil's music, and one who thinks Neil has recently released terribly sub-par material. Some points are valid, but he seems to take twisted delight in poking the bear by questioning not only the artistic merit of Neil's work, but Neil's right to do and say what he wants and to live the life he wants to. Andy wants Neil to dance and play for him as if time and place and perspective are frozen in time.

Anyway Andy, you may or may not be aware, but generally speaking, official interviews are largely "controlled" by Neil's management. It's understood in advance what's considered off-topic.

But, I'll answer the "more probing" questions you posed as I envision Neil would:

You said 'I follow my muse I never know where it's going to take me, but people will get hurt if they understand me then fine'...would you say that now includes Pegi, Crazy Horse, Stills, Crosby? You seem to have moved on a lot in the last few years what brought that about?

Neil laughs cynically and says are you aware of me and my music? I've always moved quickly, starting and abandoning projects and people when the mood strikes me. I've left a charred path behind me, but it is what it is. The muse and music always win out--you and others can decide for yourselves whether that's been good or bad, but it has kept me energized.

You played London a few years ago with CH and it did seem you were bored with the whole set list especially the extended solos... this time you've played some gems why the dramatic change?

Really, I seemed bored? It didn't feel that way to me, but sometimes it's tough to tell who is bored and who is excited. Are you passionate?

Do you really believe that most of your fans 50+ can hear the difference with the Pono sound? Have you ever tested yourself surely playing for all these years has had an impact on your hearing?

All I know is what I can hear and feel. If you don't get it, that's fine. I feel obligated to try to deliver an option for folks to experience quality sound for themselves. If they don't notice a difference and are happy with mp3s, god bless 'em. We're all on different trips, but as long as I'm here I'll be creating, searching and speaking out..

Are you in touch with Joni? Did you ever make up with Geffen?

No, but I hope she's doing well--she has a beautiful soul.
Geffen and I have really always been ok with each other and I've got nothing against him. We both had jobs to do and did them...

Better interview? It depends on your perspective and if you're living in the past or not. We can choose to look back, look forward or look within...

Take my advice
don't listen to me

Thanks everyone a good debate and some great replies, I admire all your input. Of course I live in the past I think we all do? I've been listening Neil for many years and I just feel that in my record collection amongst the several thousand if someone said you can only keep 10 4 of those would be from Neil and I thank him for all his great music and his energy in carrying on. Thanks to everyone Best Wishes let me know what you think of Eartth truthfully.

A much better interview but I'm not sure I would've let you off with some of those replies! Good fun though.

Thanks Andy for being a good sport here.

But gosh, we just have to bite on " Of course I live in the past I think we all do?"

well, maybe musically that can work for you. Hopefully not in other parts of your life.
But back to music. Isn't that the beauty of Neil's music? The Alchemy? That you can listen the past, present and future all at once at Neil concert?

Most of here have also been listening to Neil for many decades and it's exactly because he has been shifting back and forth with the times.

Say TRANS. That's an album that was 30 years ahead of its time --if that.

ps - and yes, we'll let you know what we think of EARTH. And we'll give you a hint too. We thinks we'll like it. surprise! :)

Just came across this interview with Neil at 'WTF with Marc Maron' which may be of interest (it's available to download, too)

http://www.wtfpod.com/podcast/episode-717-neil-young

From the introduction on the website:
"Neil joins Marc in the garage to talk about his music, his family, his friends, his guitars, his innovations and his new album, Earth."

The Mark Maron interview is very good (so far). I still have 30 minutes left to go, but it's a very organic free flowing interview. Our friend Andy should like this one. There are quite a few tidbits of information that may or may not have been known, or only rumored about.

An example or two:

I still drink when I feel like it. Moderation is the key, but I haven't figured that out yet...

I don't have the ranch any more, haven't been there in years...

Plus typically contrary Neilisms like:

I have my point of view--it changes all the time, but it's mine...

Good topics about band mates, influences, the Springfield, guitars, various albums from Earth to the ditch trilogy, to Trans and Everybody's Rockin'..

Well, it's time for me to go listen to the rest of it!

Topanga Daze agreed very enlightening - I didn't know he'd left Broken Arrow the family home/studio.

To: TW I meant living in the past regarding Neil's prime - the recent records just don't come close for me but I'm very happy to be in the minority. I'm not a Neil just make another Harvest fan, I always liked Trans I'm open to the fork in the road but there's been too many Meanderings In The Road. Here's to Earth. Thanks

Re: the Ranch, Neil briefly alluded to it at the Rust/HH screening interview (without follow up), similar to this interview.

Thinking about it, I'm still unclear whether he still owns it or not, but it seems clear he hasn't spent time there recently. Perhaps he "just" moved out years ago as personal matters changed...

Take my advice
don't listen to me

I like that Mark Maron interview, especially the part about mono audio. I always secretly thought I was an idiot for thinking music sounded good in mono but Neil Young agrees with me so now I'm super cool! As far as the ranch, I assume that he gave it to his ex-wife as part of the divorce.
