"Lets keep it going": Neil Young Says To Promise of the Real

Thanks to Promise of the Real for making this tour such a wonderful experience in my life. I love all the bands I have...

Posted by Neil Young on Wednesday, July 29, 2015

A wonderful message from Neil Young on his official Facebook page about playing with the band Promise of the Real:
Thanks to Promise of the Real for making this tour such a wonderful experience in my life.
I love all the bands I have played with, but this band (and the multi generational thing) is epic!

The ‪#‎RebelContentTour‬ was an experience I will never forget. Once in a lifetime.
The guys, Lukas, Micah, Corey, Tony and Tato are the greatest!
Amazing how easy and natural it was to rock on the old songs and the brand new ones - from Cortez to Big Box, from Wolf Moon to Out On The Weekend.

We played songs we had never played before
EVERY NIGHT
That has never happened to me
the new songs and the hits
& 3-hour performances night after night.
The crew loved it, the band, and people too!

Playing with these guys was a gift -
Such positivity, pure energy & no fear
I loved rocking with Promise of the Real
I love this band
Lets keep it going...

Neil
To which Lukas Autry Nelson replied:
Thanks Neil. We love you too man and are here whenever you need us

Love POTR
This seems to indicate that more Neil and Promise of the Real are in our futures! Maybe some more tour dates? Maybe another album?

Sooner or later, The Promise gets REAL ...

So, is it "Once in a lifetime." or "Let's keep it going..." ?

Exciting! If they collaborate again, one can only wonder what musical endeavors they may pursue next. A straightforward rock record would be great (not Everybody's Rockin' either), but these guys could probably do anything and it would sound great!

Please bring this tour to Europe. Amazing shows from the ones I have had the fortune to listen too.

I can only hope they tour again. The Bethel Woods show was great and I regret not seeing the Jones Beach show. Ive seen Neil on every tour through New York since 1997 and this was easily one of my 2 favorites along with the show at United Palace (2007 I think?). Neil came on stage at 8:45 and didn't leave the stage until 11:45 kicking ass the whole time. The youtube videos are great but don't do the show justice.

Yes, some mid-Atlantic dates would be nice. Is it a fair assumption that POTR will play with Neil at the Bridge concerts?

I really hope Neil and POTR come to Europe.

Sounds like NY is ready to finally put the Horse out to pasture. Sorry Pancho there may never be a final tour with CH.

That's strange, because i had exacly the same feeling listening the (great) audience recordings from that tour. It's obvious there's an "alchemy" ;-)between these young musicians and Neil. They sound fresh together, the set list from that tour is awesome, they plays songs like "Hippie Dream", "Flying On The Ground Is Wrong", "Hold Back The Tears" or "Roll Another Number (For The Road)for exemple.
These young guys fit perfectly in Neil's universe.
And i think it works both ways.
Go Neil,go. I hope you decide to tour in France soon (please ! :-))
Love you.

Well, the only certainty in Neil's world is uncertainty.

Here's hoping he makes POTR his primary band if possible. There was definitely a creative spark live and to a lesser extent on record (though it's tough to tell due to the mostly weak material).

These concerts brought back a vitality to Neil that's been missing for quite a while on his tours with Crazy Horse. Their recent outings have been way too predictable in song selection while the music's been lacking fluidity and melodicism. To me, 5 minutes of false Arc Weld type feedback song endings is a total bore, though I know many still love and yearn for it.

NY & CH belong in the hall of fame, but I feel their time together has come and gone (though they're certainly not park bench mutations).

Take my advice
Don't listen to me

Wow, some pretty definitive statements going on here.

"Sounds like NY is ready to finally put the Horse out to pasture." Really?! What sound is that? "These concerts brought back a vitality to Neil that's been missing for quite a while on his tours with Crazy Horse." Since when? Don't know what Crazy Horse shows you went to, but there was a mother lode of "vitality" at the last one I saw way back in late 2012. Which (of course) was part of the tour that was never going to happen...until it did. How far back should I go to find the peak? And Neil would never play with CSN again...until he did. Now the circle of time comes 'round again.

I'm very happy that Neil is in the groove, making great music, staying incredibly active. Was unable to catch any of the current shows, but they sound great, and if Thrasher puts them in his top echelon that's proof enough for me. Just remember that Neil has a big mind and a big barn to fill with his talent. You can go home again, and in America there are second acts and more.

@ Mr Henry:

I suspect we'll see another NY & CH tour and I wouldn't rule out another CSNY tour. As I said, the only certainty with Neil is uncertainty.

Regarding my comments about NY & CH, they still put maximum effort into it, but to me, Neil's playing style with them started changing radically (for the worse) during the Weld tour. Since then, it's just been downhill to my ears. I'll never understand the appeal of extended false song endings with no real "musical" value. Just my opinion, but to me it's self indulgent noise. I almost walked out the last two times I saw them (including 2012) but I'm more of a fan than that.

I'll always be a huge Neil fan, but the NY & CH live collaboration has passed me by(e). I'm fine as long as I have Live Rust! I know I'm in the minority here with this view, but I'm not alone.

Take my advice
Don't listen to me

Thanks to all for comments on Neil & The REAL deal.

@Mr Henry - "Sounds like NY is ready to finally put the Horse out to pasture." Really?!

Yeah, really?! Agree, we haven't seen the last of The Horse. There will be another gallop around the pasture someday. But POTR is now Neil's new trick pony, for sure.

We saw a chemistry onstage with Neil that seems to have magically transformed in a matter of months. The kind of chemistry that takes most bands years to achieve.

Like you say, what really matters is that Neil is in the groove, making great music, staying incredibly active. As we often like to observe, who else is doing this reinvention at this stage? Seriously, who else? Bob, Bruce, Paul, Mick???

@ TopangaDaze - Someday there will be an Alchemy Tour film of NY &CH that will blow minds. Trust us on this one... but ... take our advice, don't listen to TW....

Thrash,

I'll certainly take your word for it. There were many great moments from the tour and the show I saw at the Patriot Center. With proper editing I'm sure an incendiary film could see the light of day.

To me, it would have been a great tour (instead of a so-so one) if they varied the song selections more and played them more concisely--they could have added a few deep cut gems and classics alike.

Again, just my opinion--we all have our preferred "versions" of Neil, but thankfully he does what he wants to..
