You Know How Time Fades Away? And Drummers? And Bass Players? And...
Sugar Mountain - Neil Young Set Lists
Here we are in the years.
We certainly seem to be entering a period where some of our great long time musicians are moving along to that great gig in the sky.
Just within the past few months, we've lost:
As we noted last week, in the post In Memory of The Stray Gators: Gone But Not Forgotten, Neil Young is now the sole surviving member of The Stray Gators. But we've known all along that Neil Young is the quintessential survivor.
Which brings us to the statistics on the ever so indispensable site Sugar Mountain - Neil Young Set Lists. As you can see in the chart above, Neil Young has already lost quite a few of his long time collaborators. (You can see the full list of the 100+ band members at Sugar Mountain. As a side note, we did find a few of the entries a bit surprising like Larry Cragg with 382 performances and Joel Bernstein with 209 performances. Thanks Babbo B for the heads up!)
The loss of Ben Keith was definitely Neil's biggest loss in recent years, but otherwise Neil's top 20 bandmates remain intact -- aside from those noted above and the late Donald "Duck" Dunn.
We admit this is our least favorite aspect of blogging the Neil Young news and truly hope we're finished writing obituaries for 2015. We can only hope because you know how time fades away...

Danny Whitten !?!?!?
If you're asking how many shows Danny played with Neil, Sugar Mountain has that at 47.
Oh, and Larry played a lot of banjo on "Old Man" and broom on "Harvest Moon," as well as bari sax with the Bluenotes (among other things here and there), while Joel did vocorder on the Trans/Pinks tours and some guitar with the Harvesters.
I'm not the authority or anything, but that number for Peggi seems very high
Woody??
...I keep my friends, eternally
We leave our tracks in the sound
Some of them are with me now
Some of them can't be found...
Peace and love,
Ron
Love And Only Love
Saw Nils Lofgren last night and he was also very reflective on those we have lost - Clarence Clemons, Danny Whitten & Tim Drummond & Dallas.
He also told a story about Tim that at the recording of the second Unplugged session he had practiced the songs but the rest of the band had completely forgot the arrangements. Neil and Briggs went off for a drink, ordering Nils to get the band sorted whilst they were gone. It seems to have worked.
Nils was in stella form and his boxed set is a joy - something to keep me going whilst waiting for Archives Vol II.

Pegi played 88 shows with the Electric Band (08-09), 72 with the Horse in 03-04, 54 with the Chrome Dreams Band (07-08), 39 with the Shocking Pinks, 38 with the Horse in 2001, 33 with Friends & Relatives in 2000 and 13 with the Prairie Wind Band - the rest appear to be things like Bridge, and Neil sitting in with her band.
sorry, off topic but wanted people to know Harvest and Journey Through the Past are in PTA's new movie Inherent Vice. the film is overly long at 2.5 hours but the tunes are both played to near completion.
O.K. Choose your dream line-up (apart from the Horse obvs). Mine? Danny - guitar, Steve Cropper - guitar, Ben - slide/pedal, Tim - bass, Spooner - keys, Jim Keltner - drums. With Nils and Emmylou guesting. Too predictable?
Billy on bass
Ralphy in drums
Ben Keith on steel
Neil on electric/harmonica
Spooner Oldham on piano
...or just The Santa Monica Flyers.
