Be The Rain....awesome. I love the Greendale album and have never seen Neil play any of those songs live. So jealous.

It's nice to see Neil tweak these shows and play a rarity like Be the Rain here and there. He seems very relaxed and I think the unfortunate absence of Billy has led to a uniquely different musical feel and added a little spontaneity.

Regarding Be the Rain, I liked the Greendale tour and album, but must admit I haven't listened to it in years. I do remember loving Be the Rain live in concert (Merriweather Post), but absolutely hated it on the CD. For me it turned what could have been a great album into merely a good one.

I think I'll re-visit Greendale shortly to see how it has aged (or I) have aged...

Seems like there 's some good vibes being heard in Europe this summer .
Curious if Neil is using a Linvolt powered jet on his European Vacation ?
I've used half a gallon of Canadian fuel to cut my lawn this summer, how many gallons has Mr Green Earth used , numbers we will never hear , numbers he ignores while continuing to preach to the workin class that he knows nothing of !
Nice Earth T-Shirt preacher man !

Hey John EH Connelly, thanks for sharing.

I understand your point--to a degree. Yes, our hero can be more than a little hypocritical at times, but I'll cut him plenty of slack with regard to his own carbon footprint. On balance, he's given (and is giving) much more than he's taken from our global society.

I could be wrong, but I suspect that thousands of people aren't lining up to pay to watch you mow a lawn. When and if they do offer to watch your magnificent mowing gift, let us know how you'll share your talent with everyone around the world using a "half a gallon of Canadien fuel".

Neil has spread immense goodwill and harmony to millions of people over the years. Certainly more than worth the fuel he burns. At least to me...

Keep on mowing!

Be The Rain!!! Greendale is extremely underrated IMHO and those shows in 2003 were great. Wish Neil would release a DVD from that tour. This may be the first time Neil has busted out Greendale material since that tour. What a treat!

TopangaDaze, you should come out my way next time I mow my lawn. The streets are lined. Nobody cuts grass like me:)
He was brilliant in Melbourne in March and it sounds as though these shows don't lose much in comparison.

Tonight's the Night... that blew me away. It was absolutely amazing to experience that song live. I am almost certain it was not planed or rehearsed. Seemed like they went from Barstool Blues into a jam that by chance went into the famous riff of Tonight's the Night and that from the joy of playing that tune they continued play it. Neil had some minor problems remembering the lyrics which just added the rarity to the occasion.

TTN was rehearsed during the Mainz soundcheck. BE The Rain in Copenhagen. These things are planned ahead.

I can relate to the points by both John and TopangaDaze. I do agree Neil is largely hypocritical: the Tyson Foods fiasco of 2011 was shockingly naive (and with Pono now being funded by the same factory farmer who in the past has pleaded guilty to bribing the agriculture secretary!); and as others have pointed out his lifestyle is one that causes a lot more environmental damage than many of us. His heart is no doubt in the right place, but it's true his methods still need some serious work.

However, Neil's message is largely inspirational: he's trying to learn, trying to get more people involved too. So yes, I still have a lot of time for his environmental projects, despite not considering him the best role model on the subject. Greendale is a superb album, the best in recent years.

Nice to see TTN on the setlist, looking forward to hearing a recording.

I don't think anyone here is saying that Neil hasn't done good environment-related projects. As I said above, he is "largely inspirational", and I think we can all agree on that.

John raises a not-unreasonable point, however, which is that it is often better to lead by example, and practise what you preach etc. I think we can all agree on that, too.

I was up to FT. McMurray a month ago, took a 2 hr helicopter ride over multiple sites, including the restoration sites where they put Buffalo back in. They owner of the tour company took us up himself, said he spoke with Neil when he was up here, great guy but he wouldn't go up in the helicopter, he was afraid according to the owner. And I will tell you what, there is no way to see the oil sands from the ground it's just too spread out. Anyway this oil is right up on top of the ground in many spots, black sand everywhere and when the process is done the sand looks like Maui..... Yes it's white as snow and it might be a exaggeration but so is Hiroshima. My point is if your a true global environmentalist you want the keystone pipeline so the regulations and refinery is in No America. That oil is coming out no matter what and it's going on barges or rails which inflates the cost of food, which it has because of the space it's taking up on rails. Also the danger of rail cars is thru the roof compared to the most examined pipeline ever built. China and India are going to burn that oil with zero regulations. And another thing how about some enviro start pushing the massive leaks on gas and water that blow up towns every couple of months? Let's invest on pipeline infrastructure and not wait until lives are lost.
Neil's causes are his causes most of them I agree with, his music is the soundtrack of my live, but he is so wrong on this one it's unbelievable.
Oh and BTW nuke power leaves zero carbon foot print, but that's no good either. Power your iPads by candles people! Rock on

That's right, we're going to destroy the earth anyway, so we may as well be the ones doing the destroying.

Have you ever heard of setting an example? When do we start taking steps to save the planet? The ridiculous argument that "the tar sands are going to be mined anyway so it may as well be us doing the mining" is precisely the type of thinking that will destroy this planet for future generations.

"We just can’t seem to stop burning up all those buried trees from way back in the carboniferous age, in the form of coal, and the remains of ancient plankton, in the form of oil and gas. If we could, we’d be home free climate wise. Instead, we’re dumping carbon dioxide into the atmosphere at a rate the Earth hasn’t seen since the great climate catastrophes of the past, the ones that led to mass extinctions. We just can’t seem to break our addiction to the kinds of fuel that will bring back a climate last seen by the dinosaurs, a climate that will drown our coastal cities and wreak havoc on the environment and our ability to feed ourselves. All the while, the glorious sun pours immaculate free energy down upon us, more than we will ever need. Why can’t we summon the ingenuity and courage of the generations that came before us? The dinosaurs never saw that asteroid coming. What’s our excuse?"--Neil DeGrasse Tyson

Forgot to mention that I cut my lawn with one of those old rotary mowers that uses no fuel. But as people have said to me "What does that have to do with Neil Young?"

Thanks Hallgeir for the review! nice

Good to see Mr H. It's been awhile.

Lastly, why do you think N played BTR?? Excatly. To get folks to talk.

How radical that Neil. What a concept. Discuss difference and resolve somewhere in the middle.

As above, "Tu quoque".

Say your Latin is rusty, eh??

Well, "the appeal to hypocrisy is an informal logical fallacy that intends to discredit the opponent's position by asserting the opponent's failure to act consistently in accordance with that position. It attempts to show that a criticism or objection applies equally to the person making it. This attempts to dismiss opponent's position based on criticism of the opponent's inconsistency and not the position presented. It is a special case of ad hominem fallacy, which is a category of fallacies in which a claim or argument is rejected on the basis of fact about the person presenting or supporting the claim or argument. To clarify, although the person being attacked might indeed be acting inconsistently or hypocritically, such behavior does not invalidate the position presented."

Everyone knows that words are nowhere.

whats a lawn ? most are now dead out here. CA is in a water crisis the worst in modern times. if we don't get rain next winter its going to be like a Mad Max movie out here.

At 8/02/2014 07:40:00 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Again as I said earlier, let's fix the infrastructure that are leaking in this country. Billions yes billions of gallons of water are leaking and the SW is dry as epic proportions. But pipelines are bad. Let's send water by rail to California and hey let's buy oil from people who want to blow us off the face of the earth instead of those pesky Canadians.
Again Invest in all of the above including nuclear with regulations instead of letting China and India produce it .
So short sighted Neil.

@ Topo gigo
Sorry for the difference in my gas consumption quotes , is that really the issue , or a diversion from the numbers.
It does show your ability to divert the real issue by secondary differences .
I would find Mr Young's argument and discussion of facts more pertinent if backed up by the real facts . His fuel consumption over the last 55 yrs ....compared to the working class record buyer he preached to .
I cut my lawn , Neil burns fuel more than any everyday person he preaches to .
Similar to howling wolves in Algonquin Park , I've long been inspired by the music of the man .
Of late , I question the message and feel obliged by the obligation and sacrifices of my forefather... to always question those that say they know different , especially so ,from those that hide behind flags , and call themselves something that they stand for by wearing T-shirts and paying First Nations Canadians to stand on stage as a prop for their cause !
He was once one of us , he is now accountable for his public words .
At least in the Free World I live !
My Name is John Andrew Connelly , who are you , and what do you have to hide ?

@John EH Connelly - Ok, so your name is John Andrew Connelly. Why the "EH"?

Maybe try and go troll somewhere else? You've grown quite tiresome & boring lately.

And please spare us the "I'm just some poor little victim of hypocrisy." What goes around comes around, my friend. The wheel of Karma can be a painful task master. Trust us on this.

peace out

At 8/03/2014 09:24:00 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The EH is likely a joke, Thrash - the guy is Canadian, and Canadians are stereotyped as saying "eh?" all the time, which sounds like the letter A, which would be his middle initial. (Or maybe it's not anything quite that clever, but I'd like to at least think it is.)

Oh Ya , nice touch there Thrasher oats , an opinion you may not agree with , but are so quick to be-little , your true colours show for the blog world to see , enjoy your cult and the bubble of peace , love , understanding ....apparently not up for discussion , or free thought .
I am very grateful to live in a free world that allows fair discussion , and am reminded of your world that free people died for so that all may have a voice ,including rich rock stars , lawn mowers , and inter-web folk that hide behind words .
