Neil Young's "Ditch Quadrilogy" Re-Release Delayed Until November 2014
Looks like all the excitement that the Re-Release "Time Fades Away" Petition can finally be retired was a bit premature.
So after running the petition for over 9 years now with nearly 150,000 visitors, we'll just to keep referring to Neil Young's elusive "Time Fades Away" album and it's hostage status as "It's like stashing Mona Lisa in the basement."
Neil Young and Warner Bros. Records have announced that they must delay the release of Young's upcoming Neil Young Official Series 2 Vinyl Box Set, which was intended to come out on Record Store Day, due to several other projects that Young has in the works that he wishes to focus on. A November release date for the set, which includes the classic albums Time Fades Away, On The Beach, Tonight's The Night and Zuma, will be announced soon.
Time Fades Away -- it's been called the "missing link" of the "Ditch Trilogy".
Neil Young's 1973 Time Fades Away is one of the most remarkable live albums ever recorded. Certainly at the time of release, it was almost unprecedented for an artist to release a live concert recording of previously unreleased material. Long out of print on vinyl, still unavailable on CD in the early 21st century and widely bootlegged, the album is considered to be the "Holy Grail" of all Neil Young albums.
In an effort to gain wider distribution of this essential Neil Young recording, fans have started a petition requesting that the album be officially released. Those interested in obtaining a legal copy of Time Fades Away are urged to sign the petition today.
In 2003, it seemed that an official release was near when four of the "Missing 6" Neil Young albums surfaced. (On The Beach, one of the four albums released after a long hiatus, was also the subject of a fan's petition drive which would eventually gather over 5,000 signatures from the Neil Young Internet fan community Rust and Human Highway.)

Box set release wouldn't affect the petition anyway - it's vinyl, petition is for CD.
So true.
How about we petition for TFA as a pre-load on PONO?
Now that would be sweet.
Or a special TFA edition of PONO? ;)

I guess his new book, PONO, Archives II !, new album ! takes precedence over a bunch of old vinyl records
What the ....? Did I sign a petition to release Time Fades Away on CD? Holy Cowgirl... ! Why not release it on Pono? Anyway, there's a Buffalo Springfield Pono Player for sale at Kickstarter. What about that.
On The Beach is in the works...

Not surprised at all. Looks like A Letter Home has been delayed as well (was due the end of March) and no news on CSNY Live 1974 which is due for release in June.
Hope this new book and Pono isn't distracting him from his day job.
such a shame PONO is keeping archives 2 and now these 4 LP's from Neil's ultimately patient fans.
Wasn't this release initially supposed to contain "Homegrown?" I remember reading a thing a few years ago that said it would. Or maybe it was talking about it being released in "Archives Vol. 2," when that comes out in 2045.
"I went insane, like a smoke-ring day when the wind blows"
"How can I bring you to this sea of madness. I love you so much it's gonna bring me sadness"
"Now I won't be back til later on, if I do come back at all"
Pushing 70, Neil is hitting overdrive, over-worked, over-paid and over-toned. Keep it coming Shakey, we'll be here when you make it. All we need is an American tour and we can forget all this 'what'ya done for me lately' stuff.
@SONY... come to Europe.. c'mon, ya know you want to!!
Peace, Love, and Neil Young!!

Wow, Neil changed his mind???

"Homegrown," along with "Chrome Dreams," "Oceanside-Countryside" and "Odeon-Budokan," was supposed to be part of the Special Release Series (previously unreleased albums) to be issued in conjunction with Archives 2. The box set being delayed is Volumes 5-8 of the Original Release Series (remasters of previously released albums).
As for the CSNY box, that's Nash's baby, not Neil's - he said earlier this month that it would be out in July.
Mr Young won't let the CSNY box set to be released. Remember he wouldn't or Elliot Roberts wouldn't let them use his songs for the CSN box set.
Neil said 'you can use whatever you want'. Roberts had Archives in mind so he prevented it.
I don't think the box isn't coming out. Nash & co have already (nearly?) finished mixing. Pulling back would be harsh, even for Neil Young.
Its a bummer but what we really want is the 'previously unreleased albums' or 'Archives 2'. I am not too concerned about 200 gram reissues of albums all NY fans have anyway being put back. I got excited about this as it was an indication that archives 2 is on the radar. My worry is that Archives 2 which will cover the most intriguing, consistent and prolific part of Neil's long journey is not on the radar.
Argh!!!!!!!! This was the 1 thing I was looking forward to on RSD 2014. Last year's RSD was epic, this year's just went from OK (only b/c of NY) to horrible....
Does anyone know if "Live at Cow Palace" still a go for RSD?
My least favorite record is Time Fades Away. I think it’s the worst record I ever made—but as a documentary of what was happening to me, it was a great record. I was onstage and I was playing all these songs that nobody had heard before, recording them, and I didn’t have the right band. It was just an uncomfortable tour. It was supposed to be this big deal—I just had Harvest out, and they booked me into ninety cities. I felt like a product, and I had this band of all-star musicians that couldn’t even look at each other. It was a total joke. —Interview with Dave Ferrin, 1987

*Despite Young’s assertions that Time Fades Away is his “worst record,” it was far ahead of its time in its raggedy-ass nakedness. In 1996, R.E.M. cited it as an inspiration for their recorded-live-on-the-road New Adventures in Hi-Fi.

'TFA' is one Neil's best records because lyrically and the quality of the songs. I own the original vinyl record from 1973 sounds great - similar to ramshackle records like Fork In The Road, but FITR doesn't have the songs.
Doesn't TFA have a problem with mixing as it was recorded with, as NY called it, CompuF#$K? If this is the case, then TFA may not make it to PONO
Cow Palace is a bootleg, not on the official RSD list: http://www.recordstoreday.com/SpecialReleases
Where does the information come from that the NYAORS 5-8 are going to be delayed ?
On The Beach was already in the works in february as you can see on the picture below, showing Gary Burden working on the sweet reissue.
And the sleeve already got the NYA stamp on it.

Been waiting so long...
@ Ruven - the info comes from WB label directly via a Press Release March 19, 2014 - (Burbank, CA.) For further information contact Rick Gershon at Warner Bros. Records Publicity: 818-953-3473 / rick.gershon@wbr.com
Strange that the LP's are being delayed, but maybe it's a mastering thing. Who knows?
Neil does have a staggering number of things on his plate, even for an already busy guy. Solo live dates, an upcoming Crazy Horse tour, the new auto book, "A Letter Home", the 1974 CSNY tour collection (don't think he's not intimately involved in many aspects of that project), PONO, and probably other things we don't even know about.
As for Archives 2, we'll get it when it's ready. This collection will be stunning, so let's allow Neil and his team to get it right.
4 years ago I had the unexpected pleasure of meeting Neil, at the Craviotto Drum warehouse. I was there with a musician I was touring with, and Neil just happened to be there to pick up a drum kit that his old friend Johnny had made for Neil's studio. (Many of you may know that Johnny C was the drummer for the Santa Cruz band The Ducks, back in 1977.)
I talked to Neil about his classic Buick Roadmaster (Woody) that I'd seen in the parking lot when we arrived (I had no idea it was his car, or that he was there). He couldn't have been more gracious and easy going.
At one point, he said to Johnny, "Hey, I just finished mastering The Ducks album yesterday". Johnny looked stunned. "What?", he said. Neil - "Yeah, we recorded most of those shows, and I'm putting it out in the next installment of my Archives series. It came out great, you're gonna love it! In fact, it's so cool, I think I'm going to release it on vinyl!"
He went to say that it had versions of most of the material that they were playing those days, including an amazing version of the instrumental "Windward Passage".
I mentioned that I had seen the last Ducks show, at the SC Civic Auditorium (with Moby Grape opening). I said something about the fact that the power had gone off twice during the show, and he said "Oh yeah! I forgot all about that!"
There's more to the story (and photos), but that's for another day. Suffice to say, I'm as anxious as any to have that set be released!
@Gus - Thanks. Great story. Hope we can hear some more details someday!
As for "Time Fades Away" being the worst record Neil ever made...
I think most of us agree that he's wrong about that!
That tour was my first time seeing him live (Winterland March 22, 1973 - 41 years ago!), and I loved the show. The electric set was insanely loud. Crosby and Nash were there for the last half of the set. "Last Dance" is still ringing in my ears...
Can't wait to hear the "new" version of TFA!!
a guy (Neil Young) makes a negative comment about an album HE (Neil Young) made and you wanna argue with him? effin' incredible...and don't include ME when you say "most of us"
I think Neil is working on PONOLP which is a vinyl record that folds down to fit in your pocket but it's analogue so it sounds great. Of course it doesn't matter as there'll be only rumours of impending releases and these will be cancelled. Anyone know what can be done with the Blu Ray Box ? Neil harks on about the planet but it's the most wasteful piece of oackaging I've ever seen.
shocking!!
Pono - isn't it a new album by Poco with Yoko Ono?!
Wow how long did it take you to come up with that "joke"?
Well, the best release rumour I've heard in years is that there will be a new album by The Rockets... For what it is worth...
Has anyone figured out what that Crazy Horse album, Trick Horse, is yet? Which seems to be only available on iTunes.
asg -
I'm not "arguing" with Neil's opinion of TFA. He's entitled to hate it if he wants! As are you.
Which is why I said "most of us". Nearly all of my friends who are fans of Neil's music LOVE "Time Fades Away". Obviously there are those that don't...
That said, history has shown that artists don't always make the right decisions, as far as releasing their best material. I mean, how did Dylan not put "Blind Willie McTell" on "Infidels"? Many songwriters second-guess their choices as they get older, and Neil is no different.
I'm curious though - is TFA your least favorite Neil album? If so, what are the 2 above that, in terms of quality? In your opinion, of course!
"Trick Horse" is Poncho/Billy/Ralph singing songs they wrote, backed by studio musicians. It's mentioned not by name) on page 478 of "Shakey": "Stung by the Horse-can't-play criticisms, Sampedro once paid for an album's worth of sessions in which pro musicians cut the tracks and the Horse contributed vocals only."
Billy & Ralph can't write songs TFA is in the top 10 records for me there's plenty underneath!
Bob Dyan's 30th Anniversary Concert (Blu-ray) 1080i 2.0 48khz 24bit
-Neil's kills it on Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues and All Along The Watchtower with Booker T/Duck Dunn/Steve Cropper/Jim Keltner/Anton Fig
-Neil also plays on Knockin On Heaven's Door and My Back Pages.
-Video and sound are excellent
Musicares Tribute To Bruce Springsteen (Blu-ray) 1080i 5.1 48khz 16 bit
-Neil and the Horse thunder through Born In The USA
-Neil appears behind Max Weinberg during Glory Days.
@ Gus--I like TFA a bunch...I'm trying to NOT use words like "best" or "worst" because those terms will never be factual, they will always (IMO) refer to subjective opinions...the relentless bickering got old a long time ago...I kinda drifted away from Neil around the time of OLD WAYS, but I can usually find at least one song on each album that I like...
didn't mean to overreact...no excuse...sorry...
Not Really. Neil makes the call when if ever it will come
Out. Every release date that Nash has given out has passed
