The Concert Review of the Moment is from Neil Young at Carnegie Hall in New York City - Tuesday, January 7, 2014 - Show #2 by DBF:
These observations by so many well-spoken fans are spot on for the mind-blowing, trip that happened on Monday night when I saw him. Thanks DBF! We can say that many, many feel as you do of the concerts this week.
My wife surprised me on Christmas day with tickets for opening night. Cincinnati to NYC, three nights in the beautiful city capped by Neil solo at Carnegie Hall. Are you kidding me? Neil was absolutely on fire. The run into Needle and the Damage done from Needle of Death was haunting. Mr Soul on pump organ and harmonica cranked!! Carnegie Hall and her walls were shivering.
Neil was completely locked in.
It was a living room performance - at times he walked aimlessly throughout his instruments while changing harmonicas. The sound of the harmonicas locking in position as he places them into the harp rack. It was like thunder. For the most part you could really hear a pin drop. Neil's instruments are so dialed in sonically it is something to behold. This was a show by a master of dynamics. Very low-lows and screaming highs. A full space-ship synthesizer over top a grand piano on A Man Needs a Maid. At this point I was becoming one with Carnegie Hall and everything happening within it. Ohio into Southern Man sounded like it was always written as a suite. I could just keep writing about this night but just read the other comments and you'll get the picture. Any kind of seat for Thursday or Friday shows would be worth it just on sound quality alone.
I'm so thankful to have this experience.
We've heard it described as "staggering", "rapturous", "monumental", among others.
We'll have our report from Carnegie Hall tonight, Saturday, Jan 11 at 9:00 PM EST, the Thrashers Wheat Radio Hour from WBKM.org will be streaming.

my favorites are usually not the piano songs. but, Birds and Flying on the Ground', so powerful from the youtube I saw. Stunning renditions. as Ol Neil has said it takes him weeks or months to get these songs ready so to just shout out a title like hes taking requests makes no sense, of course, we know that. and thank you to Ol Neil for playing 2 + hrs each time you hit a stage. I read allot of music reviews and most of todays musicians are at only a fraction of that playing time. so he gives you a good bang for the buck. Long may you run Sky Londa. The Pride of the Peninsula.
My comment is for Thrashers Wheat, Rust Radio(and the tapers) and for Neil Young (if you happen to read this blog)...
First of all I want to thank Neil Young for continuing to share your music with your fans by giving us these great live performances to this day. They are truly appreciated maybe more than you realize.
Second, I thank Rust Radio and all the tapers out there. For over 10 years you have brought LIVE Neil into my home! Because no matter how many times I listen to Neil's albums there's nothing, nothing like Live music!
In reading the comments from these past few shows I feel torn between knowing how Neil feels about fans taking pictures and recordings, it's annoying and distracting to not only him but to us in the audience. On the other hand, it's because of these fans we get a chance to experience part of the show if we can't be there.
I've been at many concerts and the people taking cell phone pics to excess is horrible! I just think: Why can't they just enjoy the show without that damn cell phone in their hand.
Concerts in the 70's were so spontaneous. We talked to each other more, maybe passed a joint, and at the end we tried to get close to the stage together and security would let you. Ah...so many good memories.
On the other side of the coin, being able to see songs from these shows on you tube or listening to them on Rust Radio means so much to me. I rarely miss a show when Neil plays in NY, NJ or Philly, but things are tight these days. And it really kills me that I know we are all getting older, so we don't know how many opportunities are left for any of us. And to this point I say, Yes, Neil please continue to let your fans share.
And third I definitely thank you, Thrashers Wheat. I thank you for your time and dedication, your love of Neil Young's music and lastly and most important for sharing the love.
Hey,Hey I'm once again taken aback over the negative and sometimes downright nasty thought's on neil's attitude.Iv'e said it before on here that my feelings are that this and hyperrust before were brought forth over the love of neil and to lower yourself to a level of calling him names for wanting to give you his best is unsettling.Iv'e had the good fortune to see neil numerous tours since 1979 and can without much exception he always is "into it".now yeah iv'e seen show #57 in the run and iv'e seen special shows that were time capsules " one of a kind".I can't say iv'e ever seen him shortchange an audience. Only he could know what it's like to sit there in the atmosphere and play such quiet music if your lucky and you get a respectful crowd that "gets it" you see a master of sound.delivery and presentation as you could never imagine. It's because of this longing for perfection that song requests and I love you neils and the endless cameras can de a distraction that only he can feel. I was in akron in 99' that nite he told the fan il'l give you a lot of money to leave as the guy blabbed on his phone through him twice trying to start a song. after he said that there was total respect the rest of the nite and we saw an amazing show "ohio" mere miles away from where it happened.Iv'e also had the misfortune of being second row center at a show and having a six foot four drunk guy who yelled for freebird at every break sit directly in front of me. but you know what never said a word to him it was his trip you know I grinned and bared it. The point is if neil didn't have the passion or intensity for the music would any of us be there look at his songs he writes it how he feels it and I for one hope he keeps ranting for a long time to come!!. I was at farm aid and saw the idiot who said " come on lets go" in the midst of neil laying down the realest rant of the night about suicide and how it hit the guest star of the nite pete seeger and subsequently him in years later and this guy ruins the moment for thousands of people.thankfully neil cut him down to size with" I work for me" and we were treated to a killer rendition of phil och's changes that was simply amazing.Well iv'e ranted long on I guess and maybe I overstated myself I remember coming out of darien lake my first bluenotes show totally amazed at the new songs especially crime in the city parts one and two and ordinary people so dylanesque and two of the greatest songs ever written by anybody and listening to people say he didn't do heart of gold or down by the river and laughing to myself they'll never be happy me I went out got tickets and was in weedsport the next nite lol.Now here it is the greatest hits package of all time and I see people saying where is the new songs ?? really. I recently saw "trunk show" and was amazed I was indisposed when this tour happened and this was my first taste of it and for the neilophile this was the tour so many obscure song selections and thought to myself that was the show I'd always wanted to see and thanks to neil making this movie I got to .In the end all I'm saying is appreciate what we've been fortunate enough to experience from his wealth of material and talent and give him the benefit of a doubt that he knows how he wants the show to sound and its not with catcalls and cameras flashing this was Carnegie hall that in itself should of told u to have some class and just enjoy the moment.Every time I see him I play it like it's my last and hope that's never so it's the only thing that's for sure unfortunately. Long may you run my friend and people that love him as I do keep the negativity to yourself if you can't say something nice don't say it at all. peace, love and happy new year lets hope we can all just get along . p.s. ^ Good comment, but for the love of humanity, please use paragraphs! It's hard to follow a block of text that large.
Today's mystery: why did Neil meet with Donald Trump and why did Ivanka remove a picture of them (together) from her Twitter feed?
Far be it from me to tell Neil Young how to conduct a concert but why doesn't he just take a break between the first and second song each night and politely ask the audience not to take pictures or yell out requests or record the show or text everyone on earth to tell them how cool the concert is. Most people are too clueless to know and I have to point out that this very site is full of pictures and videos taken at his concerts and every night's setlist is texted live to these pages by people who supposedly appreciate his music so obviously he can't expect everyone to know the 'rules' without him mentioning them.
