that was rough musically but also very touching. and, as usual, it was neil who was most into it while the other guys just stood there. i mean, what the fuck? my wife and i were singing along with pete in our living room...john, willie, and dave can't do it on stage and help him out? thank you NEIL for being THE MAN and being in the moment. neil's set was pretty incredible too. i think pete fired him up. the best moment was when he responded to someone in the audience who wanted him to shut up and play. neil spit out "i work for ME" to a huge cheer. long may you run.
Easily my favorite part of the broadcast was seeing Pete Seeger doing a couple tunes the best he can at 94 years old. What a testament to the character of this man and the causes he has championed. He is one of less than a handful of writers/performers who have brought out the causes of the common man against the 'machine' mentality of government and big business, the precursor to the heros we have today in Willie and Neil and the rest. The chords and lyrics to 'If I had a Hammer' were among the first I learned 30 years ago, and I still love playing that song. This Land IS YOUR LAND THIS LAND IS OUR LAND - let's get it back in our hands instead of continuing to allow those in power to dictate our future. RISE UP AMERICA! RISE UP FELLOW AMERICANS!!!!
I cried a little during this bit of pure magical.
And the things that Uncle Neil said in between the songs of his set? Some of the most powerful words I have ever heard spoken from the stage of any concert EVER.
