I saw Nils do a free show at Flamingo in Las Vegas about 7 years ago. I was living there at the time, working at Bouchon in the Venetian. . I believe it was the Margaritaville bar. He was good. It was a little bit sad. He was also surrounded by a over weight mid western looking audience who had no clue who he was and looked annoyed at him. I dont know where they came from but certainly were tourists. There was about 30 people there who looked like they knew who he was. I hated Las Vegas and only lasted 10 months living there.
Nils is a really cool, down to earth guy in addition to being a really talented musician and songwriter. a couple of years ago he was in between
Springsteen tours and brought his show to a community theater near us. he had a fine musician by the name of Greg Varlotta accompanying. Nils and Greg could not have been better. After the show there was a signing upstairs. I knew there would be in advance so in preparation I brought with me three Nils Lofgren cd's: The Original "Crazyhorse", Nil's "official bootleg" and "Nil's sings Neil". I was the first in a long line of admirers. I congratulated him on one of the best live performances I had ever seen and told him I'd LOVE for him to sign all three of my cd's, BUT, I said if he were only to sign ONE I'd be curious to know which HE would pick?
He carefully studied each cd and then takes the the "crazyhorse" insert out of the cd holder. he says "wow" great question, tough choice, but I gotta go with this one 'cause it's the last time I got to record with my brother Danny Whitten. that floored me right there. then he proceeds to unfold the insert and tells me this was his first "F.U" to a record company.
his label was ok with him taking creative credit on a competing labels album, BUT NOT WITH AN ACCOMPANYING PHOTO like the other members of the horse. If you look real close at the picture on the back of the insert that's Nils sitting in the doorway between Jack & Billy! I told him I've stared at this picture a hundred times and never saw him there until he pointed it out. (thrasher email me for photos if interested herb@herbsworld.com)
he then proceeded to shake my hand, sign the other two cd's and take a photo. three degrees of separation! make a point of supporting Nils if he comes to your town. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.
Totally agree. Nils great live shows in small venues & always available at the end of the show.
What a talent!
Great picture! Good to see Nils Lofgrenwith his old band Crazy Horse. Thanks for the great story Herb. The way Nils is pictured on the sleev of the Crazy Horse album is kind of weird. But I just checked Crazy Horse: The complete reprise recordings on cd.It comes with a booklet and there are some pics from the same shoot. One has the band in front of the Cadillac Grocery. Nils is on the left but you only can see his backbecause he just turned around. The second picture is in front of a cinema. Nils is standing next to Danny but again you only see his back and a white shoe hanging around his shoulder. Don't know if this all is a coincidence? There are two more pics that have Nils on it. One is a shot of him with a guitar and the other is a really nice pic of Nils and Billy walking down the street.
Nils wasn't allowed to photographed as there was a problem with his record company - that's why he's obscured.
Oh, those record company clowns.
He was in the band, his name is on the cover, two of his songs are on the album. But no photograph allowed.
Wouldn't that be something if Neil added Nils to the Crazy Horse line-up on a future tour(Alchemy???) doubtful though Nils is touring with Springsteen in Australia and Europe(funny the two tours almost coincide hmmm???)
To @grungy
Yes, very interested the dates are so close - I have an odd hopeful feeling that we could see Nils or Bruce on stage at one of Neil's Sydney shows.
