VIDEO PREMIERE: "Walk Like a Giant" by Neil Young & Crazy Horse

The video premiere of "Walk Like a Giant" by Neil Young and Crazy Horse.

The song on the album is listed at 16 minutes, but the video is less than five minutes.

The video is huge. Really big. In fact, it's giant. Sort of trippy.

Go figure...

His mother told him a trip was a fall and don't mention babies at all...

Also, Neil is now on Twitter (@neilyoung).

Neil will be participating in Twitter's new #LegendsOnTwitter series where icons from the world of music take questions from their fans. Young's session, which will take place in October, and will be the first time he has taken questions from his fans in such a personal way. I hope (I really really hope) this is not reflective of the mix on the actual album. It's a decentsong but Neil has buried his vocal. Worse yet, it sounds like he recorded it while standing two feet away from the mic. This is what can happen when you make a homemade album.

I like the sasquatch guy, though. That was cool.

SD, if Neil keeled over dead of a heart attack next month, and speaking out could've changed that, how would you feel? I guess lots of Neil fans are fat and don't want to be seen as hypocrites by speaking out. The guy's eating himself into an early grave. An inconvenient truth. We already know he's had an aneurism and high blood pressure and 2 of his closest friends dropped dead in the last couple of years. The last thing he should be is fat. The writing on the wall is in blood. His wife and friends don't seem to be lifting a finger to change the course he's on. I for one am furious that he's killing himself. If I can help shame him into living another 30 years, I'm all in. Grow a spin, Rusties. The life you save may be Neil's.

10The You Tube video of Walk like a Giant (partial) at Red Rocks amazing - is classic Horse, with a little more melody than usual. It is a rather catchy song, and has potential for radio airplay (hence the shortened version). I'm loving the line, "think about how close we came..."

Y'know, I don't agree with the tone of Anonymous' assessment of NY's physique, but I agree with the concern.

There could be some medications that are contributing to the puffiness, though, so I won't make assumptions about the cause.

At 9/25/2012 04:54:00 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You rusties always have a million excuses for Neil. That "puffiness" is fat, plain and simple. Too much bad food, not enough exercise. If anything, he'd be on a diuretic with high blood pressure. But I do appreciate that you recognize there's a problem. As for my tone, Neil needs a swift kick in the ass. Remember Elvis, anyone?

Guitarists should immediately recognize the D'Addario string package in the kaleidoscope sequence. Look for the blue square with "XL" in the center.

I would feel like this man who is quite old and still very active possibly just met his time, like everyone.

You know NOTHING, ZERO, ZILCH about Neil's diet or his lifestyle. Don't pretend like you do. If you think that commenting on a fan page is going to help your conscience go for it (although why it has to be said more than once is unknown), but don't act like you make one iota of difference in that man's life. Neil is Neil and you are not Neil. Really all we know is that he has quit smoking pot and drinking (both likely positive things for his health).

Well done insulting the weight of Neil fans too, though. Last thing I will say on this subject.

New album.

I'm glad you're done on this subject SD. You're no help to Neil at all defending his fat. Your comments suggest that you're not very observant and that you think state of health and length of life are just randomly determined. These are not helpful qualities to have when discussing the subject at hand. It is self-evident that Neil is overeating and underexercising. It's written all over him. It serves no one to deny bald facts. If you think 66 is "quite old", you and I live in different universes. My 82 year old dad just painted his 2 story plus attic. My 84 year-old neighbor works out every other day and looks younger than Neil. A 96 year old neighbor walks every day and can drink me under the table. Red wine, of course.
I'm not doing this to help my conscience. I'm not that shallow. I'm doing this because I love the man. Of course Neil's camp monitors this site and takes in the prevailing attitudes of the day.
Two-thirds of Americans are overweight or obese. Neil fans are no exception, from my observations. So I admit it's a tough sell trying to get a bunch of fat people to tell Neil to lose weight, for the benefit of us all. But don't defend his being fat and out of shape. That does him no favors. Blithely saying that "he just met his time" if he would die soon is just ignorant. Most experts will readily tell you that most determinants of health and longevity for most people are in their own hands.

I DO NOT LIKE THIS MIX AT ALL. I hate getting my hopes up, and the video from the first leg pretty much did that. But this just doesn't sound right. Where is Danny Lanois and Mark Howard when you need them. The vocals sound very canned and the harmonies on the chorus sound like a bad overdub at 3am. not to mention that the deluxe on the lead guitar sounds like the wizzer is on 12 too often (too much spit and fuzz - dam, did I say that; never thought I would. I can't put my finger on it, but...

I'm afraid

Ha ha, this is just too much. An obviously knowledgeable fan getting picky about how much distortion Neil is using? I, on the other hand, think it sounds wonderful. Gives me goosebumps. It's a big, overwhelming sound as befits a big, lumbering, thudding, hairy, and monstrous metaphor.

Sleeps with Angels was the creative zenith for Neil with Crazy Horse. It's fitting that Briggs' last album with them was so top notch. The songwriting, production, lyrical content, etc. was lightning in a bottle.

Since then, Neil has basically gone to three or four chord drone jams with them...on Broken Arrow, Greendale, and now PP.

Don't get me wrong, I loved Greendale and this stuff sounds great - I'm thrilled to have Neil playing with them again I really am.

It just sounds a bit like of repetitiveness...

Slightly different subject - Picked up "Waging Heavy Peace" yesterday and began to read. An interesting note on why Neil quit drinking and burning - his doctor "found something" with respect to his brain that may presage early onset of dementia - Neil was worried because of history of that with his father as he got older.

There's some lines in "Walk Like A Giant" about the fear of the onset of dementia.

On the surface, I think it is about the LincVolt fire, but there's another meaning you can read into it.

Maybe, but in his book Neil describes 3 fires that set him back -bus-house-lincvolt. He's hopeful the fires are over now, but he did burn 4 wooden Indians in HH film. He is wary of the potential onset of dementia. Hope there is no more fires

You guys need to chill out about the whole fat thing.

Yes, Neil's put on a few pounds and has a bit of a gut, but for Christ's sake he doesn't look bad, and isn't obese or anything. He's probably in perfectly fine shape.

I listened to the full version on Spotify (thanks, Peter D!), in fact I installed Spotify solely to hear this song.

The song is great, classic Neil (with massive fuzzed out guitar, yeah!).

My favorite part, though, is the plodding, stomping noise section that appears to be mimicking the footsteps of a giant.

It's beautiful. At high volume, it's enormous.

I do prefer the live versions of Walk Like a Giant, especially the Red Rocks partial video from 8/6 and the first 8/5 boot from dime. Those sound like the song is fully matured and developed. The NPR preview song (full length) sounds like one of the first few takes in the studio. I know Neil is big on capturing the initial energy of the creative process, as shown on the LWW Ras videos. However, I think in the case of WLAGiant, it may have caused them to grab it a little too early. Anyway, Archives 6 or 7 will probably have the Red Rocks soundboard as Performance Series 116 or so, at least I hope.
I've barely started the book, but with Psychedelic Pill and the work with Crazy Horse appearing to be an experiment of Neil's to see what he can do straight, I had that idea in my head while listening to the NPR WLAGiant preview tonight. To me, the vocals, and the moderate reservation that they're presenting, remind me of the Elektra demos from '65 or so. Back when he was thinking too much. We remember what Briggs said about thinking while playing... I do absolutely love the part of the studio cut of WLAGiant where he sings about the big fire comin to take all his ideas. To me the guitar sounds like a huge fire blazing up between Neil's vocals and the listener, his vocals are clearly more recessed in the record at that point and it works very well. Just a couple observations about the WLAGiant first listen and how I thought it sounded with respect to Neils recording style and straightness experiment.

Contrast, with the complex sessions video from Change Your Mind, Neil was thinking about nothing, except maybe how bright the lights were at times. Its just fluid glass vs wet sand, one's smooth, one's grainy.

Hey Thrasher,
Please let the anonymous voice be heard. Don't listen to Thos and those haters.

I haven't seen or heard this video. Why would I want my first exposure to this album to be an mp3?

I won't hear any of this until the vinyl shows up at my door, or Neil plays them to me at the Toronto show.
That's one thing I don't like about this internet thing. I prefer to experience a new album all at once in high quality sound, not parceled out a bit at a time in low quality tiny videos. ( It's hard to visit this site and not play the video's)
