I've been living with Americana now, and I have to say, It's impressive. Neil has done other "genre" albums, but they were really Neil trying to be in a different skin - Shocking Pinks, Trans, Old Ways.
Here, Neil is taking traditional material and making it his. I mean, hell, who the hell else could breathe life into Clementine?
This is materal that has been part of Neil from the beginning, some of the arrangements date back to The Squires. He has put thought into the choices and the approach, but once committed to a song, he just wails it like it's his.
It's very successful as a Neil album, as a CH album and as an extension of the folk process. Every folky should be required to listen.
I think it will live on in Neil's canon, it will be one of the ones folks pick up and give a spin (or whatever they are doing) 20 years from now. It reminds me of Van Morrison's Irish Heartbeat - a genre exercise that is so a part of the man, and so personal, that is is no longer a genre exercise.
Dylan does this, changes the words, and calls it an original album (and I say this with all due respect). This is Neil's version of World Gone Wrong/Good as I Been to You and Time Out of Mind in a blender. Wholly traditional. Wholly original.
It has a single (Oh Susannah). It has a beat. You can dance to it. I'll give it a 9.
'Clementine' is fucking fantastic Raincheck - damn right. In the chorus, when they hit the D Major, it's just glorious. The childrens choir is spot on and appropriate when it kicks in...
'Wayfarin' Stranger'...love it...
The album as a whole seems like 'Broken Arrow' and 'Ragged Glory' all mashed up together...including the production.
DITTO!
I've had Dylan's Good As I Been to You in my head lately. It's really Dylan's Americana, if you will. As well as the others.
In fact, I just burned a CD with Americana songs and Dylan's GAIBTY shuttled one after the other. Love Dylan's guitar playing on this, and then have the horse raise the roof! My windshield view is very interesting now driving the backroads!
Maybe I'll learn the lyrics to Frog Went a'Courtin' now!
Great post, Raincheck!
Not a bad song on the album. I can't tell you how many people have asked about it as they walk past my garage or truck.
Does anyone know if the general admission tickets are all the same? For Fairfax, some seem to say GX4 or GX3 . . . Will sections be roped off or what?
I agree that Americana is a great, great record. Can't wait to hear it performed live!
Thanks--
@raincheck: great post, that's about it. It just FITS Neil and The Horse.
Uncle Neil and the boys do a great version of Billy Edd Wheeler's brilliant "High Flyin' Bird" !!
1. Travel On (very groovy)
2. Clementine (fantastic chorus!)
3. Oh Susannah
4. Jesus' Chariot
5. Get A Job
6. Gallows Pole
7. This Land Is Your Land
8. High Flyin' Bird
9. Wayfarin' Stranger
10. God Save The Queen
11. Tom Dula (boring...)
Everybody have luck with tickets in the presales this morning? I managed to bull floors for both Toronto, and (after some website headaches) London. One show at the start of the tour, one show closer to the end -- can't wait!
I was only interested in section 109 or 118 at the Aire Canada center in Toronto. Tried for 2 tickets at 273.00 each and nothing came up. tried single ticket and got section 118 row 11 and bought it. tried another single and section 118 row 3 came up and I grabbed it (0ne of the best seats in the house). Kept trying to get a single next to either seat but by 10:20 am nothing was coming up in either 109 or 118. At the risk of being out of line I would sell section 118 row 11 for My costs.
thanks for the info, Thrasher. I had emails from all the venues with presale info, and two out of three were incorrect. I used Amplify from your post, and it worked. In other words, I wouldn't have gotten tickets if it wasn't for you. Thank you! I've got tix for three shows.. London, Toronto, and Windsor. See you all there!
Thank you for posting the presale info. The arena in Windsor never sent me the pre-sale password. Appreciate the post. Definitely a "must see" show.
I got my CRAZY HORSE Tickets today for Toronto, lowerbowl 15th row near center ice. Not happy about the fucking price. 564.00 FOR A PAIR!!!
I hope Led Zeppelin reunites as the opener for this price & Uncle Neil puts in at least 3 hours!
