I find it absolutely stunning this thread has so little response... ZERO!
I mean, if ever there was an artist that was a symbol of 'you can do it yourself too with a harmonica and a guitar' it's Neil.
So, in order to keep the campfire burning on behalf of a legacy that he owes a lot to, he puts out a contest. Everybody that has been singing a song, be it to change the world or to get a girl, can join in.
And he even will be picking the winner himself!
By doing this, IMHO Neil not only uses that so-called social media in a REAL social way (AND with a worthy purpose), he also shows again how much he cares about precious things on this earth, such as making music, being together, and much more.
There's an awful lot of debate on here that's not even close to be so deafening as this silence...
I'm sure his core-fanbase is very busy responding to the contest. Maybe that little baby girl who sang "Needle and Damage Done" for her proud Daddykin on Youtube will respond. She's got be 8 or 10 by now.
Anything to bring them closer to their guy. That's why people will respond. I hope we'll get to listen, too! On the other hand, I do think that Neil has made an assumption about people and their understanding and love of folk music and/or history.
Neil's connection to these songs is very personal -- through his upbringing and his development as a musician. While there are many of his fans who can easily connect to Neil's reverence for the past and hopeful future, there are many more who do not want to connect to their favorite artist this way. They just want to hear good music.
Personally Peter, I imagine there will be a lot of response from fans. I know at least 4 posters here who are musicians in their own right. However, unless Thrasher is given updates about the progress for this "talent search," how would we know?
Just submitted my version of Wayfarin Stranger. What a great reason to finally record it. My son was born at home in between recording the vocals and slide guitar tracks in my home studio.
I won't soon forget this track.
I look forward to hearing everybody else's work!

And I got around to doing my "Oh Susannah" over the weekend. It was fun trying to add my own vibe to this classic.
