Neil Young's Hagström: The Story Behind The Guitar
Last month, we posted a Photo of the Moment of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young with Jimmy Page in 1974.
In the photo, Neil Young is playing a Hagström guitar -- quite a rare sight. Now here's the fascinating story about how Neil got the Hagström at Prune Music in Mill Valley, CA. Patrick "Buzz" Burke, former co-owner of Prune Music in Mill Valley, remembers the day Neil Young came in to the store to buy guitars -- and the $25 guitar he continued to play on stage 20 years later.

That's a good story, but in the 1974 photo with Page, Neil is clearly playing a Rickenbacker.
Good catch Nate!
Not sure how this mixup happened? Back on the '74 post, Dirty Young Man posted the above link stating it was the story of that guitar.
Maybe the story of the Rickenbacker will surface someday?
Neil also used that same guitar on the Solo Trans Tour. He played Computer Age on it.
Thanks for posting! I really enjoyed this bit. Hagstroms are rare but not unheard of - it's a Swedish company that still sells here in the States. The Hagstrom "Swede" is a well-respected guitar.
I often hear about Neil collecting lots of amps and guitars but for a guy who is supposed to have all this gear, he rarely strays from the tried and true - Old Black, the tweed Deluxe, the Tremolux, the Magnetone 280 (he uses a couple of these), the big 6137 White Falcon (although he sometimes has used mid-60's double cut Falcons), a few Martins. I get the sense that there is a lot of gear he has "acquired" but doesn't much use (maybe on very rare occassions). I think I've only seen one picture of him using a Stratocaster. He likes what he likes.
If I remember rightly this photo was originally in the NME which I bought religiously back then and as stated before it was at an after party for the Wembley gig which could have been in a club. Not sure-it was a long time ago. The accompanying caption said something about CSNY and Pagey commandeering the instruments from the band that happened to be playing at the club that night so if my memory is right none of these instruments actually belonged to these guys.
just saw WAGING HEAVY PEACE set for October 2012 release.Hmmm
Other hagström III users:
Mark Arm from Mudhoney,
and Kurt Cobain, here at this concert he started with an 'entire' hag, but half way through the concert, quite a big peice broke off =) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GFO-GYlg9VE
By the way, that concert of Nirvana is a great example of how many times the songs are more important then the audio quality
(doesn't mean, i thinks audio quality doesn't matter, just saying)
Thanks Dirty Young Man!
Great video. Absolutely.
performance passion always wins.
just sayin' :)
peace
