My Neil Young Vinyl Collection

As one might imagine, we get all sorts of fun stuff from Neil fans around the world.

Here's one to share...
Hey Thrasher,

I thought I'd share with you a video I made a couple weeks ago for YouTube, of me showing off my Neil Young vinyl collection- which I am extremely proud of. You may have seen this video on FaceBook's Rust Community, where I shared it. There is a whole community of vinyl fanatics on YouTube, of which I am a part of, and this is basically what we do - show our latest finds, post and respond to threads, etc.

There are a lot of Neil fans among us. It's a really cool thing, with some great people, from which I have discovered so much great music.

So I had a bit of free time this morning (excuse the messy hair!). Perhaps redundant but I made another video of my Neil Young vinyl collection but a short version, all in one video which is what I should have done to begin with. I have about six videos in all, dedicated to my Neil LPs in which I explain my feelings for each one (see them on my channel if interested). I figured for people who don't want to sit through all those videos, I'd make a short one. I am really proud of this collection and it took a while so compile and took a good chunk of change.

I'm a huge fan of vinyl and just feel that Neil Young's music sounds best on that format- which is how Neil meant it to be heard. Not sure if you are a collector, but when you listen to these albums on a good turntable, you understand why Neil prefers analog over digital- and as good as ultrahigh resolution 24-bit /192 kHz stereo sound is, I feel (just my opinion) it still doesn't compare to the warmth and nuance, that vinyl can provide with a clean LP and a half-way decent turntable.

Anyway, I don't mean to go off on a vinyl vs. digital tangent, just thought I'd share my Neil collection, which took a lot of time and money to compile - it really is a labor of love. Hope you enjoy.

And if you what to hear my thoughts on each album, check out my channel ( http://www.youtube.com/user/MrFartboy79?feature=mhum ) where I posted about six videos going over Neil's discography - just click "See All" on my videos because they were posted months ago.

Thanks Thrasher and keep up the good work. Despite everything, you truly do provide not only a service of "Neil News" and connecting us all, but entertaining and thought provoking content to us Neil "fanatics".

Also, looking forward to the tour? Can't wait!

Thank you,
Tony
aka "ShittyHorse"

Very cool Tony! Nice to put the face with the handle.... messy hair and all... :)

Tony, do you have the maxi 45 dance version of "Sample and Hold" and "Mr. Soul?"

I totally understand what you're saying here. There are certain songs that cannot be played on anything but a hifi or turntable with a good sound system.

Hey Mother Nature, thanks for watching! To be honest no, I don't and I don't think I've ever heard that mix either. I'll have to look out for it. I'm not big into collecting 45s. The ones I have (and want) right now are songs not available on the LP. I'm still looking for War Song, Philadelphia and there was a single from the 80's backed with a non-album track (the names escape me at the moment), also looking out for the triangle single of Southern Pacific, from Reactor.
Someone asked me about ARC, and I should have shown my CD. To my knowledge that has never been pressed on vinyl- at least I've never seen or heard of it. If anyone knows for sure please let me know.
Thanks for posting Thrasher! Just wanted to show my collection and hope to spread the word on vinyl as there seems to be many misconceptions by people my age or younger who haven't been exposed to the format. Many of today's turntables sound fantastic and just about everything new (and old) is being pressed or re-pressed on vinyl. It's a great hobby. Most of Neil's catalog (with the exception of his 90's output- which is rare and expensive) can be had pretty cheaply on LP. If your into or curious about collecting records check out my channel or the many others on YouTube- just search "Vinyl collection" or "Recent Vinyl Finds" and go from there. Thanks!

SH,
Great vid! I have to admit I was touched by your heartfelt connection to this beautiful compilation of Neil LPs you've carefully put together... clearly a labor of love and it really comes across in the video ... hope you get years and years of enjoyment listening to the man in the way he was meant to be listened to!

Also, very much appreciated the choice of background music ... overall, very enjoyable video.

Hope Neil gives you a chance to collect another 20 or 30 more!

Cheers,
Dan

Tony,

Do you go out to the flea markets and second-hand stores or do you go through collectors?

Are there sites online you trust? Have you ever gotten burned on a deal online?

I have to look at the condition, do you?

Thanks guys, I appreciate that. Glad you enjoyed it. Yeah, I got into collecting to get all those Neil albums that were not on CD at the time. After I got those I had to keep going. My Neil LPs are my most prized.

Mother Nature, actually a little of everything you mentioned. The harder to find ones (ie- Broken Arrow, Dead Man, Harvest Moon, Eldorado,Lucky 13, Ragged Glory) were purchased on-line through different sellers- most on eBay. Many were bought new (or still sealed), like Sleeps with Angels, Mirror Ball, Greendale, etc. Condition is extremely important and I have to say I've been lucky in that I've never received a bad LP- especially those rare ones. Some are so expensive that should it have come in bad condition (or different than described) I'd have to take some action (contact the seller for a return, or other measures) but yeah, I've been lucky. Most sellers want to have a good rating so it is better for them if they are honest about the condition. There are a few beat copies of albums I bought early on, when I didn't really know what I was doing or got free- many of those I have or am trying to find replacement copies for, but all my Neil albums are in excellent or better condition, all very listenable. I don't really collect for the value or to have them sit on a shelf, but to listen to them, so they need to be in good shape. Thanks!

Hey! That's my "Time Fades Away!!"

(Just kidding; I love your little collection of 45s.)

I never did find "Deadman" Lp but I'm sure it will show up one day. It KILLS me that I don't have that Lp.

I can only imagine what it sounds like on vinyl. I'm actually turning dark "sharp as pine needles" green with envy, buddi.

Maybe you can have a party and invite us for listen?

Hey Shitty... Great collection. Funny, I wonder how many of us there are who could create a nearly identical video? I also have multiple copies of most everything, some from foreign countries, and bootlegs and tons of 45's. Also, I have every DVD, legal or otherwise known to exist, plus some rotting VHS versions of some of the same things.

I can certainly tell that you are as enhralled and captivated by this most perplexing and interesting artist - the best Canadian export of which I know.

Enjoy Le Noise Redux.

Tony: Have you read McDonough's "Shakey"? Specifically the portion that describes the original factory packaging of "Tonight's the Night"? If not, read it. You'll become possessed - like I am - with finding an unopened copy.

Nice video, just love it. Yes, Neil does sounds best on vinyl. One of the largest record stores in town just changed their interior. More space for vinyl! Earlier this year RS magazine mentioned that vinyl sales is still going up. If you think you love Neil Young please try to listen to his music on vinyl. There's nothing like it.

But I have one question. For some stupid reason I had to buy me a new copy of Time Fades Away. Instead of going to one of the very god local record stores I ordered one on something like Ebay. What I got was an almost new copy of TFA. Cover and inlay in perfect new condition. Never seen this before. So, I was thinking that it could be a reprint. It looks original but just to perfect. Does anybody now if there are legal or illegal reprints out there? My copy said it was manufactured in Germany. When was the last time they produced TFA on vinyl anyway?

Actually yes, very familiar with that book (too familiar) My guess is there was no glitter or other cut-outs (but hey, I could be wrong) I've seen many, many, original TTN copies on eBay- most without the insert, none ever said glitter or cut-outs included. I'm sure someone on here bought that LP when it first came out, that can confirm? I have the two originals,(and a new reissue) both with the original sleeve, but only one has the insert as well. Love that album!
Oh god, if I showed EVERYTHING- DVDs, Blu rays, VHS, CDs, Cassettes, Bootlegs, books, plus the Neil-related stuff- (I also have the Crazy Horse LPs, and Neil Young tribute LP, etc.) I'd be there all day!
Dead Man was probably the most expensive, that and Eldorado- Harvest Moon, Lucky 13, and Broken Arrow were costly as well and yes most of those are from Europe as they just weren't available in the US for long- if at all. It's amazing how fast the industry turned their back on the format.
A funny thing about Eldorado- only 5000 were pressed, in Australia only (CDs in Japan), over twenty years ago, 5000 is nothing! I really wonder how many remain and in good condition? My guess is not too many. Do you guys have that one in vinyl? Seriously curious..
BecauseSoundmatters, there are more recent German versions of Time Fades Away out there- is the Cat. number 7599-25955-1, REP 54010? I think this is an official pressing, but I could be wrong. I looked up all the pressings of TFA and this was the last one done and it is German- no year was given. Yes, there are illegal pressings of hard to find stuff of there. I bought a bunch of new copes of LPs by CAN (Future Days, Tago Mago, Ege Bamyasi, Monster Movie, Soundtracks) turns out they are all fakes! But they are done REALLY well. If they sounded bad I'd be angry, but they sound great, everything is perfect. I'm just happy to have these fantastic albums on LP- check out Can if you don't know who they are. So yeah, you have to be careful. Don't spend a lot on anything unless you have done some research.

Hey SH! Great stuff. really glad you shared. And are coming back to respond.

On that TTN. Maybe a short one just on that sometime?

I know the runout grooves would be tough to show. But maybe take out of the wrapper. The reflections are kinda glaring.

Let's see that black circle.

On the insert, here are some notes...

Thanks again!

SH, Yes, my new TFA copy is REP 54010. Talking about Can: I had to think a lot about Holger Czuckay when Le Noise was released. Thought I did hear some noise on that record that reminded me of a twelve inch he made with Jaki Liebezeit and Jah Wobble. Listened to it a couple of times around the release of Le Noise. Could not find the sound snippets I did hear on Le Noise. It's a good one anyway. Here you can listen to one of the songs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bl_XdzliZ3E

Hoping someone can clue me in to an old Neil Young vinyl record my father gave me. Its a plain white cover and plain white sticker on the record with an insert inside that says Neil Young Springfield Slaughter tour 1973. ( songs with a pic of Neil holding records with one in his teeth. Then at the bottom it says 3625....so I'm sure it's limited....and has a logo with a pig in sunglasses the says trademark of quality. My Dad was born and raised in San Francisco and was a child of the 60's. He would have been 23 in 1973....I'm wondering is it a live recording of a San Francisco show? I cant find anything on the net about it? Does anyone know? And if so how rare is it....and how much is it worth?
