Dan Fogelberg Covers Neil Young's "Birds" on YouTube
A quite heartbreaking cover by Dan Fogelberg of Neil Young's "Birds" on YouTube.
The track "Birds" is on Dan Fogelberg's final album Love In Time, which was released on August 13, 2009 -- his 58th Birthday -- approximately two years after his death. He recorded the tunes in his own studio at his home in Colorado before his death and then put the recordings away - to be released after his death. After his death, his wife Jean sent them off to be finished and commercially packaged.
The last song of the album is dedicated to his wife Jeanie. Listening to someone who knows that he will soon die while singing the refrain 'It's over...it's over' is "unbelievably poignant".
Thanks Pat & Sheri (for correction).

Thank you for posting "Birds". You are wrong, though, about the part that the album was released shortly before his death. Dan Fogelberg's last album was not released until approximately two years AFTER his death. There is more about this on his website too. He recorded the tunes in his own studio at his home in Colorado before his death and then put the recordings away - to be released after his death. After his death, his wife Jean sent them off to be finished and commercially packaged.
Dan was a huge Buffalo Springfield fan according to various interviews where he sites his musical influences (along w/ Joni & the Beatles). You can often hear both Neil's and Stephen's influence in his early work. While my fave version of Birds is still Neil's on Sugar Mountain - Live at Canterbury House, Dan's cover is close to my heart, a musical meeting of my two favorite artists.
Thanks Sheri for correction. Updated.
@Ruralgirl - didn't know about Dan's Buffalo connection. thanx

Dan Fogelberg was an early influence on my guitar playing,interestingly enough with a 'Birds' song - The Raven, which I still love and still play. It's a rocker. He was a gifted talent. Saw him a few times over the years. Great playing, great voice. Sadly missed.
I could hardly get through it. Great job on a great song. Putting in that context gave me the chills.

After my live-in girlfriend died (many years ago), I listened to this song on After the Gold Rush hundreds of times, and it broke my heart every time. Thanks for posting this, it's one of my favorite Neil songs of all time and brings back a lot of bitter-sweet memories.
I know the musician Dan Fogelberg very well. This album is highly illegal. In 2004 someone broke into Dan's Colorado studio and stole unrecorded tracks. They were unrecorded since they did not meet with Dan's criteria for perfection. The woman who claimed to be his wife was never with the musician Dan Fogelberg, who never ever lived in Maine. The woman, Jean Mayer-Daily lived in a homeless shot house in the Deer Isle resort which is not a city. No one knows whom she was living with but it was not the musician. After her cult announced the musician's death from prostate cancer which he never had -- they produced several albums in his name that are unlicensed. "Love in Time" is one of those albums and CBS/Sony has been working diligently to get rid of the illegal albums. Jean Mayer-Daily and her cult are in prison. Both Dan and his partner Irv Azoff had Full Moon Productions LLC, which was the publishing entity for All of Dan's songs. All of his legal albums have the Full Moon label & logo. Dan and Irv shut down full moon in fall 2000 following Dan's stroke which led to his retirement from the music industry. His final authorized album is "Portrait," published in 1997.
