Randomly Blogged - Jeff Tweedy, Nils Lofgren on Neil Young, "Fuel Line" Video, Tour Widget
From GQ Blog interview with Wilco's Jeff Tweedy on Neil Young:
Q: What Neil Young record have you listened to the most?
TWEEDY: Tonight’s the Night. Easily.
Q: Is it your favorite Neil Young album?
TWEEDY: Yeah, I think so. If I made a list of my favorite songs from Neil Young’s career, it wouldn’t be all of those songs. It might not even be any of them. It’s more the idea of it as a record. It’s an insight into what a record can be. It’s like an anti-record or something, and something I think that Wilco kind of aspired to at some point. Maybe even to our detriment.
Q: How so?
TWEEDY: I don’t think you can manufacture that kind of mood or vibe. It was just a document of a place and time. I guess that’s what I mean more than anything. That record informed what it means to take a more documentary approach to record-making. Tonight’s the Night doesn’t feel finished. It also feels like a window into a particularly dark period of his life, and that’s pretty fascinating.

Here's Tweedy covering Neil Young's When Your On The Losing End. This was recorded at the Rocky Mountain Folk Festival in 2006. This song originally appeared on Neil Young's album, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere.

Good article on Nils Lofgren in PopMatters "Less Is More: Nils Lofgren Piano Man" by Robert Celli:
With each track on the album [After the Goldrush] I was drawn to the economy and restraint of Lofgren’s playing. His chordal approach added heft to Young’s vocal delivery while providing foundational support for the songs melodies. It’s the type of playing that suggested nods and eye contact amongst the participants. Langdon Winner, in his original review of the record for Rolling Stone in 1970, described the band’s performance of “Southern Man” this way; “By today’s standards, the ensemble playing is sloppy and disconnected. The piano, bass and drums search for each other like lovers lost in the sand dunes, but although they see each others’ footprints now and then, they never really come together.” This “half-baked” quality-as Winner further characterized it- become the hallmark of Young’s work with Crazy Horse and went on to inform subsequent alt-country playing in further decades. Lofgren was integral to this dynamic.

Just a reminder that we're now microblogging with Twitter. We're quite surprised at how rapidly the number of Twitter subscribers has surpassed email subscribers. Apparently, e-mail is too slow for Neil fans?!

A bit off topic, but has anyone heard who (if there are anyone) will be opening for Neil Young on his upcoming trek through Canada?
Thanks!
wow what a amazing video of neil in the future 12\16\09, since when do we have technology to see concerts 9 months in the future?
That’s actually the video I put up. Kind of cool to see it here. I tried to record as much of the new stuff as I could including Light A Candle and Hit the Road. When I read “fuel line video” I first thought it was a new video Neil made, but seeing the video I put up was a surprise.
Date corrected. Thanks
We try and stay on top of things but we're not that far ahead of the game.
Jeff Tweedy looks like a young Neil, and Uncle Tupelo/Wilco are 2 great bands.
Everest is opening for Neil on the upcoming Canada/US tour. I don't know if there is a second opener.
