"A Day in the Life" at Farm Aid 2008: "Like the Pope giving mass"
Neil Young cover The Beatles "A Day in the Life" at Farm Aid 2008.
If you're pressed for time you must see last 2 minutes of video where Neil loses hat, gets hat back, all the while shredding poor Ol' Black to shambles. Or, as a commenter posts: "Like the Pope giving mass".
So what would John Lennon think?

That's what Neil Young is about right there boys and girls. Like the Pope giving mass.
I HAVE FRIENDS IN THE BAND AND NEVER HAVE SEEN THEM WORK SO HARD AND BE SO TIGHT AS LAST NIGHT. HIS BAND IS AMAZING, LAST NIGHT WAS SO AMAZING ITS HARD TO DISCRIBE.
ANYONE KNOW WHY HE DOES NOT DO LAST TRIP TO TULSA? WHEN I ASK I GET A TENCE LOOK
Neil has played Last Trip To Tulsa many times. There's plenty of other songs he's never played live, and plenty that he's played less than LTTT...
that was a fantastic laugh to watch. thanks thrasher
John Lennon would say: "amen"
Fantastic, I tell you what, if all 4 Beatles were still alive I doubt they would be able to touch that rendition. The Neil Young band are tight but its the energy of the man which makes him stand out from his peers. The man is incredible. I saw him do a day in the life this summer in Dublin and it blew me away. Usual I know what Neils going to perform as I study the set lists but I was so busy leading up to Dublin I never knew he introduced it into his set. I could not believe it. I love the song. it is close to my heart as I am from lancashire, so to here Neil sing the lyric Blackburn, Lancashire is phenomenol.
Boy from Lancashire again: I forgot to say. How can he do that to Old Black? Man I thought he was going to do a Pete Townsend and smash the whole thing up.
Great laugh when he tries to give the xylophone the same treatment as he gave ol' black in the last seconds of this excellent footage ;-)
Lennon would be proud! I did write something about this a while ago. Used Macca's name instead of Lennon because he's not with us anymore. Made a reference to Otis and Aretha that I still believe is somehow very right.

Because Sound Matters
Something bothers me about this performance. He hovered around old black at the end like he still wanted to squeeze more out of her even lashing the strings across her to get the final drops.
As he walked past Anthony Crawford he seemed a little unsure what Neil was up to or what mood he was in and flashed a quick grin. Then Neil starts on the xylophone and you can see Peggy's arm wrapping around him trying to pull him away like an obsessed child.
Maybe I am reading it the wrong way. I have seen Neil perform countless times but there's something strange about the end of this performance I cannot put my finger on. Does anyone else feel this?
McCartney said, "The bloke stole our song." Rock and Roll can never die-Not as long as Neil is around.
Thank you for putting this up for sharing!!
