North American Fall 2008 Neil Young Tour Schedule

Neil-Young-Continental-Tour-2008.jpg

Dates for Neil Young's North American Fall 2008 tour have been announced. The news confirms some of the rumors we've been following recently.

Concert reports and reviews
October 14 - St. Paul, MN -- Xcel Energy Center
October 16 - Winnipeg, MN -- MTS Centre
October 18 - Regina, SK -- Brandt Centre
October 19 - Calgary, AB -- Pengrowth Saddledome
October 21 - Everett, WA -- Comcast Arena at Everett
October 22 - Vancouver, BC -- GM Place
October 29 - San Diego, CA -- Cox Arena
30 - Los Angeles, CA -- The Forum / on sale August 25
November 1 - Reno, NV -- Events Center
4 - Kansas City, MO -- Sprint Center / on sale September 12
5 - Omaha, NE -- Qwest Center / on sale September 12
29 - Halifax, NS -- Metro Centre

December 1 - Montreal, PQ -- Bell Centre
December 2 - Ottawa, ON -- Scotia Bank Place
December 4 - Toronto, ON -- Air Canada Centre
December 5 - Toronto, ON -- Air Canada Centre

December 7 - Detroit, MI -- Palace of Auburn Hills
December 9 - Chicago, IL -- Allstate Arena
December 12 - Philadelphia, PA -- Wachovia Spectrum
December 13 - Boston/(Worcester), Massachusetts -- DCU Center
December 15 & 16 - New York, NY -- Madison Square Garden

Also, see tour map on Rust Radio and setlist grid chart of 2008 US/Canada tour.

Some song chart analysis by Roel "Obviously Doing Well":
30 different songs, finally some setlist variation in the second half of the tour, a 7 song show-length difference in between the short Regina/Calgary/Toronto2 shows (19 songs) and the final show in NYC (26 songs). That 2nd New York show now equals the 26th-long setlist of the last show of the winter European tour, where Neil did a 26-song set in London. Some innaresting one-offs on this tour, "Helpless" was only played on the opening show, "The Sultan" once only played once and the only "2nd encore" song as well, another one-off was the brand new song "Get Around" played on the last show.

Also: was the Philly show the last we heard of "Sea Change"?

Amazing: 10 new songs on one tour (granted, 3 of them debuted in Europe), when was the last time that happened on a regular tour, Greendale 2003?

The concerts will feature the same band that he has toured Europe with: Ben Keith, Rick Rosas, Chad Cromwell, Anthony Crawford and Pegi Young.

Death Cab For Cutie and Everest will support dates from October 14 through November 5; Wilco and Everest are on the bill for dates starting November 29 through the tour's conclusion, with the exception of the December 9 Chicago date which will feature (TBD) and Everest in support.

Probably one of the most interesting aspects of the announcement is that all shows for this tour will be general admission floor with reserved seating in the stands. This is great news for those of us who had to be restrained from standing and moving during "No Hidden Path".

General admission tickets will be prices at $75.00 with reserved stand tickets ranging in price from $45.00 to $250.00.

Thanks Chicago!

Thanks for the nod, Thrasher!

I can't imagine why Wilco wouldn't do the Chicago show--unless it's the recency of Lollapalooza and a bit of band rest-up.

And, who would open in their place? Good forbid Fallout Boy, another local band.

Neil's going to be stupid burned out by the end of this. Plus Bridge School is coming up in a couple months... AKA the only NorCal date in this tour. I'm getting tickets to that. Screw Death Cab and the no-namer band.

Everest is a band signed to Vapor Records.

At 8/18/2008 10:46:00 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Why would you think Neil is going to be burned out?
Look at the schedule...3 weeks of work, a few weeks off...another 3 weeks of dates. What is so tiring about that?

Some of you complain when Neil doesn't tour. Then he goes on tour (a lot) and you still aren't happy.

What gives with you people?

we need neil in Newfoundland, please come.... please.. please. I dont think he has ever played a show here.

Burnout? ... Wasn't it Neil that wrote, "Better to burn out ..." Anyhow, Neil delivers night in and night .. rest assured if you go you won't be disappointed.

Does anyone know if there will be pre-sale tickets?

BSB has to be 10/25-10/26. Hopefully, a regular gig in the Bay Area before/after BSB will be announced. Neil skipped doing a full show in his hometown area during the first leg of the Chrome Dreams Tour. :(

ditto to BayArea!

A big tour like this sure sounds like a good way to promote a box set, doesn't it? :)

Then again, maybe it doesn't. :(

It's Neil after all.

Hey all, very excited, missed him last time he was in Vancouver. Any word on presale? Ive never been a fan of ticketmaster but Ill play ball to get in on some decent seats. Last time i saw him was with Sonic Youth in Edmonton .. it was insane

Being in the north east, and having seen Neil 3 times last December at the United Palace Theatre, I will definately have to pass on seeing him at Madison Square Garden. Not a nice place to see a good show. I cant dig it and realy other than trying to make alot of $$$, there is no reason for an artist like Neil who doesnt need the $, to play someplace like MSG at this stage of his career.
Simply greed, I'm sorry to say.

Neil was in Philadelphia last year...why won't he come to Pittsburgh? My parents won't let me drive to Philly...nor take me for that matter.

Anyone finds out the Vanvouver Presale please post. And yes Terry I was at the sonic youth concert in Edmonton as well and it was insane.

If you look at the setlist he has stopped playing Words and Ive been waiting for you, he needs to bring those back for the USA

At 8/19/2008 12:10:00 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I'm sure that the setlists will be far different from th 2007 theater tour. If, for no other reason, half of it was acoustic. That won't work in this setting--he knows that.

We/I were spoiled with last year's small venues. This will be a totally different expereince for sure.

At 9/13/2008 12:01:00 PM, Blogger ShittyHorse said...

It's true...some of you are nuts. I'm a 28-year-old fan- a huge Neil Young fan...I've seen the guy (soon to be) 15 times, I have all but three of his albums on Vinyl (mind you this collection is a labor of love as I was not around or too young when this albums came out on vinyl nor do I have any Neil Young fans for family members who passed them down to me) and I've bought and read almost every book I could find on the man. After all this and 14 other Neil Concerts I didn’t think twice about getting these tickets. I was able to get the GA on the first pre-sale for MSG 12/15 but if I didn’t I would have had to spend 300+ for my wife and I go to... plus train tickets etc. To me Neil Young is worth it; I am a fan. But its seems some of you expect way too much from the guy. I BET NEIL FOUGHT WITH THE PROMOTERS (LIVE NATION/TICKET MASTER) to get those FLOOR STANDING GA TICKETS for the REAL FANS whom he knows will be on-line right at ten am to get them. I've never heard of the cheapest tickets being right up close...have you?
I’m afraid some of you may be beyond fans but rather becoming so obsessed with the guy you become venomous when he does not do exactly what YOU want him to do (i.e. Greendale, Living with war. Trans etc I could go on and on).... which is ridiculous this is NEIL YOUNG people! HE will not always do what you want him to do. I think some of you need to think back to why you like this guy in the first place as I fear some of you maybe heading in Mark David Chapman Territory here..just be careful and realize he's just a man who’s very talented (and yes the guy is very rich…big surprise…hello?…rockstar!), very passionate and makes beautiful music that speaks to some primal nerve deep with us. $300 isn’t that much money (to even most Americans) for a great night, a very transcending experience and an awesome memory that you can share with future generations. I spend that in a couple months on weed alone...lets started adding up a few weeks of some of your bar bills! Think about it. What would all of you say if Neil just chose to retire from touring? Do you think he HAS to? I know if I had his money I wouldn’t do ANYTHING I didn’t want to do….and if im to go out on the road for MONTHS- I’m gonna want to be PAID well. If most of you were in his shoes, with all that money, you’d want to be paid well too.
Before coming on here (A FAN WEBSITE NO LESS) and start spitting fire just really try to think about what it is you like about this man in the first place. I know this weekend at farmaid and on December 15th at MSG I'll KNOW why I do!

I just got back from seeing Neil at the DCU Center in Worcester, MA. It took me close to 40 yrs to get to see him, and I must say it was well worth the wait. He is absolutely AMAZING, and his music both vocally and instrumental are as young as the day he released his songs. I could NOT believe what an incredible performer he is and his band ROCKED...!! Last night at MSG, Everest (who are they?) opened promptly at 8 8:34, followed by Wilco (great set) at 9-9:50, then much roadcrew set up. Finally a spiffed up, hair combed back, Neil arrived and blew the joint away for two hours plus. Kind of laid back crowd. Interesting mix (I'm his contemporary) of older, younger fans. If you want to see a legend who has not lost a step, hurry tonight for the last show of this tour. And don't leave early-A Day in the Life was incredible!

At 12/16/2008 04:30:00 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Everest was very good, Wilco was great and NEIL was ON FIRE. From the opening note to the last sound coming from his shreded guitar after "A Day In The Life" He had total command of MSG. A great mix of tunes from a smokin' "Cortez The Killer" to the beautiful "Oh, Lonesome Me" and plenty of harmonica sprinkled throughout for GOOD measure. A TRUE treat. The thousands of smiling faces exiting The Garden is the best testimony that Christmas Magic took place last night in NYC. "Thank-you for a real good time"

Garcia later!

I think I had my ultimate rock show experience last night.......This is long but I think some will enjoy it.....Arrived at Grand Central Station from Conn. about 6:30 and walked to MSG in a light snow.....Pretty cool looking with the Christmas lights and stuff......My son's friend came through with three comp passes from his cousin who works for Neil Young......We were a little nervous at first because the guy at will-call couldn't find them at first, but they were there......Went in to check our seats at about 7:15.....Section 73 just to the right of the stage about 15 rows from the floor.....We watched the show over John's left shoulder so to speak......Saw Mike of Wilco walking around the General Admission area a few times......Friends and relatives of Everest were scattered around us waving and taking pictures of each other and a few band members who came out to great them.....Bill Murray popped his head out for a few minutes from the side aisle near the stage (more on that later).......Everest came out and did a fine job......John and Pat of Wilco as well as Peggy Young joined them on stage for Dylan's "You Ain't Going Nowhere"......The Arena was about one third full by the time Everest finished.......Wilco came out a little before 8 and rocked the place......All were in fine form.....I had moved to another seat to get a more straight on view of the band when unknown to me our connection to the tickets came out to where my son was still sitting and gave them VIP backstage passes.....Meanwhile, I watched Wilco unaware that my son had the keys to the kingdom.......The Wilco highlight for me was "Shot in the Arm" and "IATTBYH".......Jeff brought out Spencer to play drums for a super 13th birthday present for "The Late Greats"......Jeff commented that everything is now all down hill for him which was pretty funny......He also commented on how nervous he was......When Wilco was done I returned to my seat a few sections from where I had watched Wilco perform and couldn't find my son and his buddy......About 10 minutes later they appeared with these shitty grins on their faces.....They had been back stage and stood with Spencer as he was waiting to go onstage......They also said hi to Bill Murray......Since the passes could be peeled off I was able to get my chance at rock and roll nirvana......We walked past the security guards through the tunnel and right in front of us was Wilco's dressing room.....Pat and John were hanging outside talking to friends......When John was done talking I went up to him to congratulate him on the great show and shook his hand.....He was very gracious and easy going.....Pat was pretty much involved with his group so I didn't approach him......One of the bands tour people was standing at the door when my contact asked if we could say hello to Jeff......He told us if we were quick and didn't cause a scene......Into the inner sanctum we went......To the left of us was Nels who looked exhausted but happy.....He was talking to some friends so I didn't have the chance to say anything to him.....We also saw Fred Armisen and Will Arnett...... Next was Glen and Mike who were also very pleasant after I shook their hands and commented on the great show..... They were probably wondering who this guy was.......Sitting down with his son Spencer was Jeff......When he was no longer talking to anyone I went up to him and mentioned how we had seen them at the Shubert in New Haven and how great the show was and how great they were tonight......We shook hands and then I asked him for the once in a lifetime rock and roll memory, a picture.......Yes, I now have a photo with Jeff that I can put under my pillow and I didn't feel like a stalker......I wished Spencer a happy Birthday and headed out, my night complete or so I thought......On the way out we actually grabbed a beer from their cooler(ballsy, I know) and I spoke to John again.....I asked him when the album was coming out and if the Wilco Song was going to be on it.....He said in the spring and that yes the Wilco Song would be on it and that they enjoyed playing it.....Back out in the hallway we finished our beer and said hello to John McEnroe and headed back to our seats when who did we spy walking past? Noel Gallagher and Gem Archer of Oasis.....We actually followed them to the section we were sitting in......Noel was sitting on the aisle seat in the section to our left three rows down.......I had the aisle seat next to him......I introduced myself to him and shook his hand and he reluctantly went along........Sitting behind me was Timothy Hutton and a group of his friends.....My son had the honor of being told to sit down by Tim while Neil was playing "Hey, Hey, My, My".......He was blocking his view......Meanwhile my son and his friend went back stage two more times during Neil's set and they spoke to Jeff as he watched a TV monitor of Neil Young's performance......They spoke about the Wilco Song and the new album......During Neil's encore(A Day in the Life) I was standing right next to Noel Gallagher as everyone was on their feet going crazy.....My son looked over to Noel and said you have a lot of work to do tomorrow to top this.....Oasis plays MSG tonight.....Noel smiled and said yeah I know......Like I said, rock and roll nirvana.....A great show and a great night......Sorry for being so wordy but I tried to get everything in to share the experience......
